يغفلُ معظم الأشخاص عن العناية بالمسافات بين السنية بشكلٍ يومي، إما لعدم درايتهم بضرورة ذلك أو ظنّاً منهم أن تفريش الأسنان هو أمرٌ كافٍ لضمان سلامتها من الإصابة بالنخر.
للأسف فإن معظم حالات نخور الأسنان التي تصادفنا في العيادة السنية تكون قد بدأت انطلاقاً من المناطق بين السنية نتيجة عدم تنظيفها من قبل المريض، وهي إما أن تُكتشف صدفة ً أثناء الفحص الدوري وتكون مفاجأة ًغير سارة للمريض! أو يكون الألم المسبَّب منها هو الدافع الأساسي لزيارة المريض.
تتعدد وسائل العناية بالمسافات بين السنية وهي:
- الخيط السني: وله شكلان أساسيان، المقطع الخيطي (floss) والمقطع الشريطي (tape).
ومن الأشكال التجارية له أيضاً الحوامل البلاستيكية التي قد تسهل على المريض التعامل مع الخيط الذي يتطلب بعض المناورات اليدوية، مع بعض التحفظ على فعالية الخيط المثبت بحامل.
- الفراشي بين السنية: وهي متوفرة بأشكال ومقاسات مختلفة تناسب حجم وشكل المسافة بين السنية لكل مريض، وهي وسيلة فعالة جداً لمرضى التقويم ولتنظيف المسافات حول التعويضات السنية.
ولضمان سلامة المسافات بين السنية؛ إليكَ بعض النصائح:
• حافظ على الفحص الدوري للأسنان كل ستة أشهر.
• دع طبيبك يختار الوسيلة الأفضل والأنسب لحالتك للعناية بالمسافات بين السنية.
• استخدم الخيط أو الفرشاة بين السنية على كامل الأسنان مرة واحدة يومياً قبل النوم.
• امتنع عن استخدام الوسائل غير الصحية (كالأعواد الخشبية، وأطراف الأوراق الحادة) لما تسببه من أذىً وضرر كبير من دفع الفضلات بدلاً من إخراجها، ورض اللثة وتوسيع المسافة بين السنية، ناهيك عن عدم ضمان نظافتها.

Most people overlook the daily care of their interdental spaces, either because their lack of knowledge about the importance of it, or just because they’re thinking that teeth brushing is enough to prevent dental caries.
Unfortunately, most cases of dental caries that we treat in the dental start out from interdental spaces as a result of not being taken care of by the patient, and it is either discovered by coincidence during periodic check-up, being an unpleasant surprise for the patient! Or because of the pain that drove the patient into the dental clinic.
Multiple tools are available to take care of interdental spaces:
- Dental Floss: with two basic types (the floss section, and the tape section).
Some companies offered a floss plastic holder in the markets, which could make it easier for the patient to deal with the traditional floss that requires some manual maneuvers, although there are some doubts about the effectiveness of this tool.
-Inter dental brushes: They are available in different shapes and sizes to match the diversity of interdental spaces, and they are very effective tools for orthodontics patients and to take care of dental prosthodontics.
Here are some tips to maintain the safety of your interdental spaces:
•Follow a periodic dental check-up every six months.
• Let your dentist choose the best and the most appropriate tool for you to take care of the interdental spaces.
• Use floss or interdental brush on all the teeth, once a day before bedtime.
• refrained from using toothpicks and sharp paper edges to clean interdental spaces as they cause injury and food debris pushing instead of removing. Not to mention that they’re not guaranteed to be clean and safe.

كيف تختار فرشاة أسنانك الكهربائية وما هي طريقة استخدامها؟
Powered toothbrush, how to choose it? And how to use it?

ضمن سلسلة التوعية بالصحة الفموية التي بدأنا بها، نصل اليوم إلى موضوع فرشاة الأسنان الكهربائية، والتي كنا قد أشرنا في منشورنا الأول حول هذا الموضوع أنها لا تملك أفضليةً على الفرشاة اليدوية التقليدية حسب معظم الدراسات.
لكن في الواقع، ولكي نكون منصفين، فإن فراشي الأسنان الكهربائية ظهرت في الأسواق للمرة الأولى عام 1939م، وبالتالي فقد مرت بمراحل كثيرة من التطور، سواءً على مستوى الشكل والتصميم أو على مستوى طريقة عمل الرأس العامل وفعاليته.

ومن هنا يمكن لنا أن نقول أن الدراسات التي أشارت إلى تساوي كفتي الميزان بين الفرشاة اليدوية والفرشاة الكهربائية من حيث إزالة طبقة اللويحة والتصبغات، اعتمدت على مقارنة الأنواع المتعددة المتوفرة من الفرشاة الكهربائية، والتي لن نخوض في تفاصيلها لعدم جدوى ذلك، ومن بين هذه الأنواع برز نوع ٌواحدٌ استطاع أن يخلق فروقاً دالة تجعل الباحثين قادرين على القول أن الفرشاة الكهربائية تتفوق على الفرشاة اليدوية حيث زادت قدرة هذا النوع بنسبةٍ وصلت إلى 11% في فعالية تنظيف الأسنان.

إذاً، عندما تقرر الاعتماد على فرشاة الأسنان الكهربائية فعليك اختيار الفرشاة الدورانية الاهتزازية Oscillating Rotating Toothbrush التي تعتمد معاً على حركة الاهتزاز والدوران بشكل متناوب مع وعكس عقارب الساعة.
قد تكون الفرشاة الكهربائية الخيار الأفضل في بعض الحالات التي تفتقر للقدرات الحركية اليدوية المطلوبة لتفريش الأسنان باستخدام الفرشاة اليدوية (كالأطفال والمسنين وأصحاب الاحتياجات الخاصة ومرضى الباركنسون وغيرها من الحالات.....)

Following the “Oral Health Awareness” series that we started, we are going to talk today about the powered (electric) toothbrush that most studies did not reveal its advantage over the traditional manual toothbrush.

But to be fair, the Electric toothbrush appeared on the market for the first time in 1939, thus it has undergone many stages of development, in shape, design, and function.

Hence, we can say that the studies that have pointed to equal result between the manual toothbrush and electric toothbrush in removing plaque and pigmentations, adopted a comparison of multiple types available of the electric toothbrush, which will not be detailing.
Among these types, one type emerged and was able to create significant differences in function that made the researchers able to say that the electric toothbrush is superior to the manual toothbrush, as it showed better efficiency of 11% over the manual toothbrush when it comes to teeth cleaning results.
So, when you decide to choose the powered toothbrush as your daily tool, you should go with The “Oscillating Rotating type” that work in both vibration and rotational movement alternately with and counterclockwise.

Electric toothbrush could be the best option in some cases that lack the manual skills required for manual teeth brushing (such as children, the elderly and special needs people, and patients with Parkinson's disease and other cases .....).

هل علي استخدام فرشاة الأسنان التقليدية أم الكهربائية !؟

لعل هذا السؤال هو السؤال الأكثر شعبيةً في عيادة طب الأسنان! ولعل الإجابة ستكون مفاجِئَة لمن يسأله أيضاً !

في الواقع، أثبتت المراجعات الأدبية الطبية والأبحاث العلمية السريرية ألا فرق واضح وصريح يميز الفرشاة الكهربائية عن الفرشاة التقليدية.

وقد اعتمدت هذه الدراسات على مشعرات تراكم اللويحة (plaque) وإزالة التصبغات حيث لم تظهر الدراسات الإحصائية فروقاً دالة بين النوعين (إلا في نوع معين من الفراشي الكهربائية سنتطرق إليه في منشور لاحق).

إذاً... مرة أخرى... هل علي استخدام فرشاة الأسنان التقليدية أم الكهربائية !؟

إن طريقة تفريش الأسنان سواءً أكان ذلك بالفرشاة التقليدية أو الكهربائية هي التي تحدد مدى نجاح وفعالية التفريش بحد ذاته، ويمكن القول أن الغالبية العظمى من الناس لا يعلمون الطريقة الصحيحة لاستخدام فرشاة أسنانهم وبالتالي فإنهم لا يحصلون على النتيجة المرجوة.

Which type of toothbrush should I be using, manual or powered?

This could be the most frequent inquiry from dental clinic visitors, but the answer to this question could be really surprising for some people.

Studies, clinical trials and literature reviews indicate that there is no real difference between manual and powered toothbrushes.
The main factor that was compared, was the efficiency of plaque and stain removal, and again no clear difference was statistically shown between the two types (excluding one specific type of power toothbrush, which we will talk about later).

So again please! Which type of toothbrush should I be using, manual or powered?

Actually, it is not what you are using but how you are using it!

The proper manner of brushing your teeth is the only factor that determines the success and efficiency of it, and unfortunately the majority of people are not aware of the right way to do that.
