United Arab Emirats got exceptional achievement on December 1, 2018, coincides with the 'Year of Zayed' and country's 47th National Day, and is added to country's numerous accomplishments in various domains.

The UAE passport was ranked first by Passport Index, an interactive online tool that provides users with insights on passports with the ability to compare and rank the world's passports. The ranking is based on freedom of movement and visa-free travel to passport holders.

The UAE, under the leadership of The President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has surpassed all expectations after accomplishing this achievement

This success was achieved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation under the leadership of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

In his remarks on the occasion, Sheikh Abdullah said, "This achievement is a true reflection of the legacy of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father of the UAE. It also underscores what can be achieved through positive diplomacy, reflecting the UAE as a confident and engaged force at the global stage."

The UAE passport holder can travel to 167 countries without the need for pre-visa requirements, which is 84 per cent of the number of countries listed in the index.

The UAE passport was on 27th position in December 2016, and now has attained first place globally in December 2018.

This achievement mirrors the county's civilised face, respect and appreciation at the regional and international levels. It is supported by a wise policy and leadership that has been working hard to build the country's bright image abroad to make it a hub for wisdom, moderation, coexistence and peace.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation launched the UAE Passport Force initiative to place the Emirati passport on the list of the five most powerful passports in the world by 2021, however, the country has achieved this goal three years before the dateline.

The strength of the passport does not only represent the identity of the citizen but also an important factor affecting its access to global opportunities, ease of movement and quality of life.

The Passport Index issued by the Arton Capital, ranks countries' passports based on the number of countries a passport holder can enter without obtaining a visa or obtaining it at the time of entry. The Index is a global benchmark for classifying international passports and reflects the world's view on the power and impact of passport.

** Pakistanis are among top 10 investors in Dubai's property sector

The UAE will remain an investment hub for Pakistanis who consider the emirate second home and see huge potential to expand their businesses in the region, top executives and businessmen said.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, officials and corporates said investors from Pakistan would continue to invest in the UAE's real estate, automobile, retails, SMEs and other sectors despite the Pakistan government's efforts to bring back Dh550.5 billion ($150 billion) worth of liquid and illiquid assets held by its citizens overseas.

Ahmed Shaikhani, president, Pakistan Business Council, said many Pakistanis are based in the UAE for more than 35 years and now the second generation has been investing billions of dirhams in real estate and automobile sectors.

"Pakistanis are among top 10 investors in Dubai real estate including industries in free zone as well as mainland. In fact, Pakistanis are among the first to initiate exports of fresh fruits and vegetables to the Middle East via UAE. There are a large number of Pakistani professionals in many other sectors including accounting and finance," he said.

According to Sultan Butti bin Mejren, director-general of the Dubai Land Department, Pakistani investments exceeded Dh57 billion through 46,058 real estate investments made by 32,083 investors in past 10 years.

According to AF Ferguson estimates, Pakistani nationals hold Dh550.5 billion ($150 billion) worth of assets abroad. Around 2,750 undisclosed properties are held by Pakistanis nationals in the UAE. Pakistan government had given amnesty to its citizens holding assets abroad till July 31, 2018.

Atif Rahman, director and partner of Danube Properties, said Pakistanis attracted towards UAE real estate due emirates' open and transparent economy.

"In Dubai, the real estate sector is well regulated and every dirham invested is accounted for in escrow accounts. Each of the real estate transaction is recorded well with Dubai Land Department and Real Estate Regulatory Agency. The transparent, accountable and sound regulatory environment helps attract investment in real estate, in addition to the freedom of movement of capital, goods, services and people - are very crucial in attracting investment, be it in real estate or in business or industrial development. Another vital factor in increasing investment in Real Estate is also due to high return on investment," said Rahman.

Danube, one of the leading privately-owned property developers, has hosted roadshows in Pakistan. It conducted roadshows in Lahore and Karachi in December 2017 and another one will be held next month in Karachi.

Pakistani expatriates are one of the largest buyers of properties in Dubai and the second largest among the non-GCC investors. "We have our fair share of that amongst our clientele," he said.

Shaikhani said 7,000 Pakistani expats around the world including those living in Britain, UAE, Europe, and USA own Rs1,100 billion worth properties in Dubai.

"Almost 1.4 million Pakistanis live in UAE and around 3.5 million in the Middle East. Due to non-availability of freehold status in other Middle East countries and very high tax-free rent returns offered in UAE, Dubai is the major attraction to invest in real estate. Also, plenty of investment options in property, easy ownership transfers, strong rental income without tax and higher appreciation in rental returns are the key factor of investment in real estate of Dubai by Pakistanis," Shaikhani added.

Etihad Airways has started an initiative which allows customers to pay for their flights in monthly installments rather than one lump upfront.

The Abu Dhabi airline has partnered with online payment service provider PayFort to give consumers who book via Etihad the opportunity to pay their fare over a period of between three and 60 months. Etihad said 17 banks are taking part in the programme.

The initiative was designed to assist low to medium income travellers and families by empowering them with the ability to book travel without the burden of having to pay for it up front, according to Justin Warby, Etihad Airways vice president digital strategy and innovation.

โ€œThis is perhaps an example of the most intuitive use of technology we can provide as an airline," he added.

Emirates and Turkish Airlines have said the cabin ban on laptops no longer applies on their flights to the US.

The two airlines are now in the same position as Etihad, which saw the ban lifted on Sunday for its flights from Abu Dhabi.

Emirates, which flies to the US from its Dubai hub, said it worked with US authorities to meet new security rules.

Turkish Airlines said it was also now allowing passengers travelling to the US to take their laptops onboard.

Dubai, Istanbul and Abu Dhabi airports are reported to have put tighter security checks in place.

Emirates said in a statement: "Effective immediately, the electronics ban has been lifted for Emirates' flights from Dubai International Airport to the USA."

The airline, which flies to 12 US cities from Dubai, thanked customers for "their understanding and patience during the last few months".

Turkish Airlines said on Twitter that all electronic devices would be allowed on its US flights from Wednesday.

It leaves Qatar, Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait waiting to have the ban lifted.

Saudia, the flagship carrier for Saudi Arabia, said passengers would be able to take the electronics on US flights from 19 July.

Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) was named World Book Capital for the year 2019 by the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee which met at the Headquarters of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) at La Haye.

The city was selected because of the very innovative, comprehensive and inclusive nature of the application, with a community-focused activity program containing creative proposals to engage the very large migrant population.

The year of celebrations will start on 23 April, 2019, on the World Book and Copyright Day.

With the slogan "Read - you are in Sharjah", the program focuses on six themes: inclusivity, reading, heritage, outreach, publishing and children. Among other things there will be a conference on freedom of speech, a contest for young poets, workshops for creating Braille books and tactile books as well as many events for Sharjah's multi-ethnic population.

The application of the city of Sharjah was accepted by an Advisory Committee, comprising representatives of the International Publisher's Association (IPA), the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and UNESCO.

The city's objective is to foster a culture of reading in the United Arab Emirates and birth new initiatives to meet the challenge of literary creation in the area and in the rest of the Arab world.

Cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capital undertake to promote books and reading and to organize activities over the year. As the nineteenth cities to bear the title since 2001, Sharjah follows Athens (2018) and Conakry (2017).

Some of the smallest countries in the world continue to dominate the list of the world's richest countries, an analysis by Global Finance Magazine shows.

The ranking was published in February 2017 and based on data from the International Monetary Fund.

The magazine ranked the world's countries according to their gross domestic product (GDP) based on purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita.

The small countries that dominate the top ten all have small populations compared to countries that lead the world purely in terms of GDP โ€” such as the United States, China, or Germany.

Most of these small nations heavily depend on immigrant workers who often do not reside in the country they are working in or are not granted resident status, and are therefore not counted in the GDP per capita calculations.

15 of the 30 richest countries in the world are in Europe, while big some big economies such as the US, Japan, and Canada also made the cut.

The GDP per capita listed represents the amount of wealth produced in 2016 and is expressed in international dollars.

30. Japan โ€” GDP per capita: $38,893 (ยฃ31,732)

29. Finland โ€” GDP per capita: $41,812 (ยฃ34,114)

28. France โ€” GDP per capita: $42,384 (ยฃ34,581)

27. United Kingdom โ€” GDP per capita: $42,513 (ยฃ34,686)

26. Oman โ€” GDP per capita: $43,737 (ยฃ35,685)

25. Belgium โ€” GDP per capita: $44,881 (ยฃ36,618)

Dubai in line for worldโ€™s first rotating skyscraper
==
Dubai is full of jaw-dropping views from its myriad of skyscrapers, but for those who demand a fresh panorama without moving to a new home there could be a solution.

First announced back in 2008 before being put on hold, Dynamic Architectureโ€™s rotating skyscraper project has been rekindled.

The idea is that the building, known as the Dynamic Tower, will be built in four dimensions and will constantly change shape.

"It will never look the same," said Israeli-Italian architect David Fisher, speaking recently on Your Discover Science channel on YouTube.

"The floor is rotating very smoothly. You donโ€™t hear anything," he said.
