Restaurant review: Kashi Art Cafe - Fort Kochi, Kerala, India
Tucked away in an alley just off the busy Bellar Road and literally a stone's throw from a line of popular roadside seafood restaurants, this little gem is easy to miss. So be sure to make your way to it and you won't regret it. A lovely little cafe sits behind a small art gallery front room of a house which opens into a courtyard (but of course, this is Kerala - there has to be a courtyard!) as you walk past a small cafe counter which has a worktop has burner with a large kettle with Indian tea on a perennial boil and an Italian coffee percolator alongside, a couple of large freshly made cakes under clear acrylic cloches entice you to what lies beyond. A narrow path lined with quaint sculptures leads into the courtyard (past a small kitchen) with some canteen style tables and chairs probably seating 30 covers at most. The guests are from multiple nationalities as the chatter of various languages reaches your ears. A friendly server appears immediately and hands you a menu which the minute you open blows you away with its eclectic offering! More so because you have just walked past the kitchen which you now wonder how it turns out this myriad fare, at cafe prices! The front of the menu elaborates the cafe's emphasis on "simple" and "natural". These principles resonate throughout each menu item's description and believe it or not, leave you thoroughly spoilt for choice! We were only three, regretfully not very hungry, people so we couldn't sample as much of the food as we would have liked. My son ordered a chicken-noodle soup which was served with two hunks of the most gorgeous whole meal bread doused in butter. The soup was a mildly peppery broth with tender rashers of chicken and julienned vegetables. My mum chose the aubergine and spinach lasagne which was just melt in the mouth stuff. And I had the fish special of the day which was a local catch of the day steamed in a banana leaf with tamarind and pepper caramelised onions served with lemon rice and a crunchy salad. The fish was silky, the rice just a touch lemony and the salad fresh.
We were so stuffed the server was disappointed he couldn't tempt us with coffee and cake - I have to say we were more disappointed than him about that! Like I said, if you are in the area don't miss this place - the little gallery, the sculptures and the courtyard with aromas from the kitchen to the food on your palette paint the most eclectic dining experience in this tiny corner of the world 😊
