Restaurant review: Kashi Art Cafe - Fort Kochi, Kerala, India

Tucked away in an alley just off the busy Bellar Road and literally a stone's throw from a line of popular roadside seafood restaurants, this little gem is easy to miss. So be sure to make your way to it and you won't regret it. A lovely little cafe sits behind a small art gallery front room of a house which opens into a courtyard (but of course, this is Kerala - there has to be a courtyard!) as you walk past a small cafe counter which has a worktop has burner with a large kettle with Indian tea on a perennial boil and an Italian coffee percolator alongside, a couple of large freshly made cakes under clear acrylic cloches entice you to what lies beyond. A narrow path lined with quaint sculptures leads into the courtyard (past a small kitchen) with some canteen style tables and chairs probably seating 30 covers at most. The guests are from multiple nationalities as the chatter of various languages reaches your ears. A friendly server appears immediately and hands you a menu which the minute you open blows you away with its eclectic offering! More so because you have just walked past the kitchen which you now wonder how it turns out this myriad fare, at cafe prices! The front of the menu elaborates the cafe's emphasis on "simple" and "natural". These principles resonate throughout each menu item's description and believe it or not, leave you thoroughly spoilt for choice! We were only three, regretfully not very hungry, people so we couldn't sample as much of the food as we would have liked. My son ordered a chicken-noodle soup which was served with two hunks of the most gorgeous whole meal bread doused in butter. The soup was a mildly peppery broth with tender rashers of chicken and julienned vegetables. My mum chose the aubergine and spinach lasagne which was just melt in the mouth stuff. And I had the fish special of the day which was a local catch of the day steamed in a banana leaf with tamarind and pepper caramelised onions served with lemon rice and a crunchy salad. The fish was silky, the rice just a touch lemony and the salad fresh.
We were so stuffed the server was disappointed he couldn't tempt us with coffee and cake - I have to say we were more disappointed than him about that! Like I said, if you are in the area don't miss this place - the little gallery, the sculptures and the courtyard with aromas from the kitchen to the food on your palette paint the most eclectic dining experience in this tiny corner of the world 😊

Best Brunch in Dubai!

We’d heard from various people that the food at Okku was better than the leading Sushi restaurants in town, so we thought we’ll check it out for ourselves. Went there for a Friday brunch last week and boy, was it good or what!
They open doors at 1pm and it’s usually tough to get a table if you don’t have a reservation. We had one so we were shown to our table by extremely friendly staff. Once all the tables are full they close doors. And the lights are dimmed. And the music starts. And your glasses are filled. And the mood is set !!!
There is a bowl of steamed Edemame with just a few Hakata sea salt crystals sprinkled on it – perfect accompaniment to whatever you are drinking, be it sparkling wine or bubbly. You’re also offered a choice of three welcome drinks so we chose Mojitos, just to compliment the champagne.
The first item to arrive on the table is a Hushihu Salad – just the most thinly julienned mixed cabbage, leeks, daikon, mache, red raddish with baby gem lettuce and pomegranate all tossed in amazu and topped with beautifully crisp shredded duck in hoisin sauce. It tasted superlative as it was chilled so everything was crunchy and there was this whole sweet, soy and slight tang medley of flavours.
Certainly set the ball rolling and you have to try really hard not to eat it all, because you know there there are 10 more items left to come!
Next came a crispy ginger-soy chicken with sesame followed by seared Wagyu beef in a truffle ponzu sauce. The Wasabi Tiger Shrimp that followed were the most delightful wasabi shrimp I have ever had. They were soft, juicy and delicately flavoured, not at all the greasy, crusted-batter ones you get at countless other places.
Next was an aubergine course that I didn’t particularly care for. Then came the sushi/sashimi – all you can eat buffet! I’d give it an 8.5 out of 10 because I have had better sushi. But by now, our heads were in cloud nine with all the bubbly which kept getting magically topped up, the volume had been pumped up, and they had a singer belting out the most awesome songs from the 90’s, so really everything was a party even in our mouths!
And the food wasn’t over yet. Next came a platter of truffle & garlic fried rice, some amazing honey-sansho stir-fried chicken bytes and a fillet of the most delicately seared yuzu-miso black cod I have ever eaten. It was flaking gorgeously and just melting in the mouth. The fried rice and chicken had a wonderful bite to compliment the fish. Awesome combination of flavours and textures.
The dessert buffet was platters of fresh, chopped fruit balanced with green tea mousse bites and miniature deconstructed apple tarts.

All in all, the most sensationally heady mix of food, drink and music. Came away buzzing and highly, highly recommend to anyone looking for a great way to spend a Friday afternoon in Dubai :D

Restaurant Review: The Croft, Marriott Harbour Suites, Dubai Marina
As a British Expat living in Dubai, I was very excited at the news of this new Brit Gastro-Pub opening at the Marriott in Dubai Marina. I had coincidently heard an interview with Chef Darren on one of the radio stations while driving one day. He came across as affable and deeply passionate about his craft. So when an invitation from a friend, who lives at the hotel, to dine there came up I jumped at it. From the moment you enter the restaurant the ambience and mood transports you into a pub. Chalkboard art not just on the walls but also on the pillars is funky yet elegant. The kitchen area is completely open right in the middle, which is an intense statement by the Chef of his confidence in his and his team’s work. You don’t hear any of them shouting over one another nor is there any clanging of pots and pans – just the calmness of busy bees! The menu is pricey but as you read through it the variety of food on offer is distracting and you want to try everything. We were two ladies and two pre-teen boys, with my son being a foodie like me. He never orders anything he has eaten before so he asked for the Roast Duck Breast, which he has never had in a family pub. His friend wanted a traditional Fish and Chips. I wasn’t too hungry so I ordered a starter portion of Chicken Skewers with Stilton Sauce and a side of Rocket Salad with Parmesan. My friend asked for a Tomato Burrata salad with a side of Chilly Broccoli. We weren’t drinking but the drinks menu was a varied collection of British Ciders, Ales and Craft Beers. While we waited for the food to be served we were offered fresh, warm bread baskets with two varieties of soft butter – one regular and another which is a butter melted and cooked to burning point which makes it nutty. The bread was crusty outside and soft inside with lovely crumb, a great palette teaser. When the food came it was a sight for hungry eyes! Beautifully plated, and correctly placed in front of the person who ordered it. We all brandished our cutlery and dived straight in. The chicken skewers were delicious little bites on elegant bamboo cocktail sticks, though I found the stilton sauce a bit over-seasoned. The rocket salad was fresh and crunchy, and the parmesan had sweet notes which created a lovely balance. My son’s order of duck was cooked to perfection, served on a bed of puy lentils mixed with some finely shredded cabbage. Beautifully sautéed vegetables and a squash mash added lovely flavours to each bite alternatingly. I tasted the fish and chips and they were a complete delight. The fish was flaky, the batter crispy and the chips were so very British! The burrata was so fresh it melted in the mouth and the broccoli was just the right crunch, with delightful chilly and burnt garlic undertones. It was the first time my son didn’t order a dessert as he was so satisfied with his meal! Looks like we will be going back with the Dad to try some of the drinks and more man-food :) Very highly recommend indeed!!

Restaurant Review: Koi, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi
I selected this restaurant based entirely on TripAdvisor ratings (my review is now on it too) and didn't regret it for a second. The drive up to the restaurant is superb and it is ensconced in a little square off the elegant St. Regis hotel on Saadiyat Island. We weren't very hungry so we ordered the seafood miso soup which had amazing depth of flavours. We asked for recommendations for maki rolls and were advised to go for their Signature Dragon Rolls which have baked crab, shrimp tempura and eel with eel and sriracha sauce. These are an explosion of taste and texture in your mouth - a complete party: soft, delicate, intense, crisp all at the same time! We then had the baked crab rolls which were delicate and lovely, paired with Shrimp Tempura rolls (can you tell we love tempura!) which were also the best we have had ever. To complete our seafood o**y we ordered the lobster tacos which were unsurpassable - crisp tacos with perfectly cooked, chilled lobster with a citrus guacamole underlined with wasabi. WOW!! Mocha ice cream bites in yuzu, dark chocolate, mango and lemon sorbet flavours were an all singing-all dancing end to the meal !
The restaurant is listed as $$$$ (the menu has it's share of expensive items in Sushi/Sashimi) but our meal came in under $150 for 3 people, so it is possible to pick out a great selection without putting a hole in your pocket. We don't live in Abu Dhabi but whenever we do return, we are certainly going here again to sample more of the menu :o) Highly, highly recommend!
