WHY YOU NEED TO TRAVEL MORE!

There is so much wisdom to be gained when visiting other countries. Opening yourself up to new experiences and new opportunities – staying in a in a back-packers hostel, volunteering with an outreach organisation, investing time getting to know the people and their culture and you will be rewarded with an abundance of both memories and wisdom.

Sure, you might learn about England's history, the rich culture of China and the geography of the Philippines. But the life skills you learn will prove most important in the long run and be the cheery on top of your cake.

Here are some of the things we have learnt from our travels:

Communication skills
Travelling the world is a fantastic way to challenge for your communication skills. More often than not you are going to be traveling to a country that does not speak the same language as you do and you will have to be able to speak to strangers that don't speak your language on a daily basis in order to find new friends and building relationships with them, telling the taxi driver where you want to go or just being able to effectively communicate that you need a coffee. Being able to effectively communicate is a skill that will prove equally useful back at home or back in the office.

Crisis management
Anyone who has traveled has come across their fair share of tricky situations. Getting your bag robbed in a densely crowded palengke (market), or getting to the airport and realising that you have forgotten your passport and ticket back at home, finding that the excursion that you booked for today is actually for next week, getting to the hotel and realising they are fully booked and the reservation you thought you booked was actually never booked. The list could go on and on but being put in these situations and facing the facing these trials and tribulations head on, working through them and deciding on the best course of action helps you to develop your crisis management skills in uncertain times.

Learning to speak a new language.
Just being able to say good morning to someone in a foreign country is a beautiful way to start the day. Immersing yourself in any culture is a great way to learn a foreign language. Being able to communicate in that language every day and using the words you have learnt strung in a makeshift sentence in real life situations will help you develop your new language far more than any class room ever could. Even if learning a new language isn’t on top of your travel itinerary being able to speak and understand the language of the country you are traveling to will help make your travels a little bit easier when it comes time to book transport and accommodation but more importantly being able to speak the same language as someone (even if its using makeshift sentences) allows you to connect with people on a deeper level and will definitely enrich your travels

Prioritization and budgeting
Being able to determine what are the essentials and what is not needed is vital to getting around the world smoothly. We all know someone that wants to pack everything including the kitchen sink into one backpack or spends their entire holiday budget on the first day. Being able to make the difficult decisions prioritise what is most important as well as what you can afford will enable to effectively plan your travels as well as prepare for the likelihood of something not going to plan and these skills will help you succeed in your day-to-day life back at home or in the office.

Become accommodating
Travelling allows you to break the mold of familiarity, at home or at work everything is pretty familiar, you wake up at the same time, see the same people everyday and for the most part you are just going through the daily routine. Travelling breaks familiarity into many pieces as you will be interacting with new people on a daily basis having to learn how others live their lives and adjust to their way of living. You will learn where their priorities lie and what is most important to them – how they view work, family, education, the environment which can be overwhelming at first but will greatly enrich your life because you will become a more understanding and accommodating person as you learn that everyone is different and not everyone has the same priority structure as you do.

Travelling is a great way to acquire more memories but it is also and excellent way to expose you to new ideas and provide valuable learning experiences. What you do with the wisdom you acquired is up to you. But either way you will be a better person because of it.
