Misak Manushyan: The Armenian who entered the French Pantheon

In Paris, the ashes of Resistance hero Misak Manushyan and his wife Meline were solemnly reburied. They became the first foreigners to enter the French Pantheon.

A poet and a fighter, Armenian by birth and French at heart, and admirer of the French Revolution, Missak Manouchian was a man with many identities. A survivor of the Armenian genocide, which left him an orphan, he played an important role as a political organiser of Armenians in France, working alongside his wife, Mélinée - indeed, the couple was inseparable.

His love of France, its culture and values began to blossom during his formative years living at a Francophone orphanage near Beirut. In 1924, he moved to Marseille, and later to Paris.

During World War Il, his engagement in the armed conflict led him, in August 1943, to take command of the Parisian Francs-Tireurs et Partisans de la Main-d'œuvre immigrée (FTP-MOl) resistance group, who carried out spectacular missions in occupied Paris. Hunted down by the Paris police, they were arrested and handed over to the Germans, who paired their trial with a xenophobic, antisemitic, and anti-communist campaign.

The affair became known as the "Affiche rouge", meaning "Red Poster”. The final letters from Manouchian and his comrades, who were condemned to death, show the universal values that motivated them to fight. A poignant letter addressed from Missak to Mélinée was immortalised in song by Léo Ferré, who based the lyrics on a poem by Louis Aragon.

The exhibition, which is open until 08 September 2024, covers Missak's extraordinary life and coincides with the entry to the Panthéon of a man who, along with his leader and 22 of his comrades, died for France.

Misak Manushyan was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor, with streets and squares in Paris, Valence and Marseille being named in his honor.

🏛🍇 Zvartnots: Architectural Splendor and Winemaking Heritage

The inclusion of grapevine motifs pays homage to the historical importance of grapes and winemaking in Armenia's past, echoing the region's agricultural richness and the vital role of viticulture.

Throughout history, winemaking has held profound significance in Armenia, with various regions actively participating in viticulture.

Notably, in the eastern part of Zvartnots, an intriguing structure emerges—a large winepress dating back to the 7th century AD. Constructed with sturdy tuff walls in a rectangular plan, it comprises two segments and a lengthy corridor between them. The collective capacity of all the winepress baskets, known as 'takar' in Armenian, reached an impressive 22,000 liters.

Tradition of blacksmithing in Gyumri

The tradition of blacksmithing in Gyumri holds a significant place in the cultural heritage of Armenia and was recognized by UNESCO on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This centuries-old craft involves the meticulous shaping of iron to create an array of tools, household items, and decorative pieces.

For generations, blacksmithing has been a cornerstone of Armenian craftsmanship, with Gyumri particularly notable for its prominence in this trade. Historical records from the 19th century note the existence of precisely 247 blacksmiths in the region, underscoring its importance.

Гордость армянской культуры – танцевальный ансамбль «Берд» в этом году отмечает свой 60-летний юбилей.

Ансамбль был основан в 1963 году в столице Армении городе Ереван. Идея назвать целый ансамбль в честь армянского танца Берд принадлежит основателю «Берда» Борису Геворгяну.

Берд – один из самых древних танцев армянского народа, в переводе с армянского означает крепость. Ему более трех тысяч лет. В древности этот танец исполняли в праздник плодородия.

«Живая» крепость – обязательный элемент танца Берд. Чтобы возвести на сцене двухэтажную стену, нужны месяцы репетиций и немалая физическая сила. Исполняют танец только мужчины в костюмах древних армянских воинов. Двигаться нужно так, чтобы зритель почувствовал мощь и силу непробиваемой крепости.

В репертуаре танцевального ансамбля «БЕРД» представлено более 100 народных и фольклорных танцев, как разных регионов Республики Армения, так и многих областей исторической Армении.

Сегодня коллектив возглавляет сын Бориса Геворгяна, Карен Геворгян, который продолжает традиции отца и является энергией и движущей силой коллектива.

The village of Tatev is one of the must visit places in Armenia. It is home to the 9th century Tatev monastery, which is one of the oldest and most famous monastery complexes in Armenia. During medieval times it was a vital scholastic, enlightenment and spiritual center, and played a singular role in the history of Armenia.

To visit Tatev, you can either use a serpentine road or “Wing’s of Tatev” Airtram, operating between Halidzor and the Tatev monastery.

“Wing’s of Tatev” is the shortest, most picturesque and impressive route to Tatev Monastery. It is also the longest reversible cableway in the world (5752 m), recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.

Fountain "Signs of the Zodiac" on Charles Aznavour Square in Yerevan

Charles Aznavour Square is a small square in the Kentron District of the Armenian capital Yerevan. The square is named in honour of the French Armenian singer Charles Aznavour as part of the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of Armenian independence in 2001.

The square adjacent to Abovyan Street includes a number of important venues including Stanislavski Russian Theatre, the "Moscow" Cinema, the Artists' Union of Armenia offices. Grand Hotel Yerevan on Abovyan Street also overlooks the square. Cafés, restaurants and the beautiful "Zodiac Signs" fountain complete the scene.

Constructed by the initiative of Catholicos Vazgen I, the Cathedral of St. Gregory the Illuminator (Surb Grigor Lusavorich Mayr Yekegetsi), located in the Kentron District of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia - is the largest cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the world, and is one of the largest religious buildings in the South Caucasus.

The construction of the Cathedral began in 1997 and ended in 2001. Located next to the "General Andranik" Metro Station, it is visible from many areas of Yerevan. The complex consists of three churches with a total capacity of about 2,000 seats. Built in the traditional Armenian architectural style, this is the most visited church in Armenia.

Базилика 17-го века Пресв. Богородицы (Сурб Аствацацин) Армянской апостольской церкви, была расположена на живописном берегу нa острове озера Севан в Армении.

Остров стал полуостровом во время индустриализации в 1930-х годах, когда уровень воды в озере упал на 20 метров. Несмотря на то что, что уже более 90 лет эта местность не является островом, армяне до сих пор называют его "Kгзи", или "остров".

Армянская княгиня Мариам, дочь царя Ашота I Багратуни после смерти своего супруга, Сюникского князя Васака Габура, дала обет возвести 30 церквей в его память. В 874 году Мариам вместе с настоятелем Севанаванского монастыря - архимандритом Маштоцем Егивардеци, (будущим Католикосом всех армян), построили на острове сразу две церкви, сохранившиеся до наших дней.

В честь княгини Мариам, в 17-м веке на Севане возвели базилику Пресв. Богородицы. На протяжении всего своего существования базилика была не только маяком веры и местом для молитв и размышлений, но и местом сбора местного населения и символом богатого культурного наследия Гегаркуника - здесь проводились религиозные церемонии, духовные собрания, ее стены даже служили убежищем для тех, кто искал убежищa во время конфликтов.

Базилика сочетала в себе элементы традиционного армянского дизайна с влиянием византийских мотивов. Каменное сооружение было украшено внутри причудливой резьбой и фресками, на которых были изображены сцены из жизни Пресвятой Богородицы, библейские сюжеты и сцены из жития святых.

Интерьер был освещен естественным светом, просачивающимся через большие окна и отбрасывающим безмятежное сияние на священное внутреннее пространство церкви. Лазурное озеро Севан со своими восхитительными переливами дополняло изумительную картину.

Однако в 1931 году базилика встретила свой печальный конец, когда она была разрушена по решению властей Советской Армении, оставив после себя пустоту в сердцах местных жителей. Kамни базилики впоследствии использовались для строительства Домa творчества Союза писателей Армении нa Севанe в 1932 году.

Did you know, that on the Island of Sevan, in addition to the famous monastery of Sevanavank, there was also a wonderful Basilica of the Holy Mother of God, which the authorities of Soviet Armenia in 1931 dismantled into stones, which were subsequently used to build the Lake Sevan Writers’ Resort in 1932.

The 17th century Basilica of the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin) of the Armenian Apostolic Church, was located on a picturesque shore of the Sevan Island in Armenia.

The island became a peninsula during industrialization in the 1930s, when the water level in the lake dropped by 20 meters. Despite the fact that for more than 90 years this area has not been an island, the Armenians still call it "Kghzi", or "Island".

The Armenian Princess Mariam, the daughter of King Ashot I Bagratuni, after the death of her husband, the Syunik Prince Vasak Gabur, vowed to build 30 churches in his memory. In 874, Mariam, together with the abbot of the Sevanavank Monastery, Archimandrite Mashtots Yeghivardetsi (the future Catholicos of all Armenians), built two churches on the island at once, which have survived to this day.

In honor of the Princess Mariam, in the 17th century, the Basilica of the Holy Mother of God was build. Throughout its existence, the Basilica has been not only a beacon of faith and a place for prayer and reflection, but also a gathering place for the local population and a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of Gegharkunik - the religious ceremonies, spiritual gatherings were held here, and the Basilica even served as a refuge for those who sought shelter during conflicts.

The Basilica featured a combining elements of traditional Armenian design with Byzantine influences. The building was decorated inside with intricate carvings and frescoes, which depicted scenes from the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Biblical scenes and scenes from the lives of saints.

The interior was illuminated by natural light filtering in through large windows and casting a serene glow over the sacred space of the church. The azure Lake Sevan with its delightful tints complemented the amazing picture.

However, in 1931, the Basilica met its sad end when it was dismantled by the decision of the authorities of Soviet Armenia, leaving behind a void in the hearts of the locals. The stones from the Basilica later were used to build the Lake Sevan Writers’ Resort in 1932.

Малый Севан отличается большей глубиной и изрезанностью береговой линии. Большой Севан имеет ровное дно, его берега не сильно изрезаны.

Артаниш стал приютом для таких птиц как серый гусь, белокрылый турпан, красноголовый нырок, белоголовая утка, лысуха, дикая утка, лебедь, пеганка, армянская чайка, большой и малый баклан, ибис, фламинго, чернокрылый ходулончик и еще более 250 различных видов птиц.

The Artanish peninsula is located in the east of the central part of Lake Sevan. To the east of the peninsula youwill find the Artundj Bay, to the west - Noratus cape, with which the peninsula divides Lake Sevan into two parts: the Big Sevan and Small Sevan.

The Small Sevan differs in bigger depth and indented shoreline. The Big Sevan has even bottom, its shores are not deeply indented.

Artanish has become a haven for such birds as the gray goose, white-winged scoter, red-headed pochard, white-headed duck, coot, wild duck, swan, shelduck, Armenian gull, great and small cormorant, ibis, flamingo, black-winged stilt and more than 250 other different species of birds.
