Blog #3: Pure extra Virgin Olive Oil from… LEBANON?!

Well, that question came into my head as I visited Canarbo and Brian showed me some new products. “Chef, what do you think about this” he asked, “taste it” followed directly after the first question. So, I did and .… I closed my eyes after the taste and dreamed away to my Moms family in Italy. I am a huge fan of classic Italian Olive Oil Extra Virgin, of course. Pure, warm and fresh taste, deep, not too strong, smooth flavor with a note of grass. I said to myself “Damm this is a fine, very fine Olive Oil” and it got my attention..
I asked myself the question “Where does the olive tree actually come from?” Well, that was a journey to find out.

The Olive (Oleaceae and Olea Europeana) is around 6000 years old, can be a few years younger or older, and in that time, you found them in the country of Phonecia, today we call it Lebanon.
The Queen, Dido Elissa, of the Phoenician state of Carthage (Tunis) and the city of Tyre (Lebanon), spread the Olive Tree around the Mediterranean Region; Greece, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Turkey, Egypt and Tunis, coastal regions.
This all happened around 850 B.C.
From there it got cultivated and spread to further area’s such as France, Portugal, Isla Canarias, etc.
There is even a village in Lebanon, “Bcheale”, with a legend that an Olive branch returned from the Arch of Noah! called “The Sisters Olive Trees of Noah” 6000 years ago which amazingly still have its fruits.
That’s what I would call a gift of GOD!!
So next time when you visit Canarbo PLEASE ask the Staff and taste “GODS gift” on Bonaire.
Lebanon the Ancient history behind Olive Oil.

Blog #2: Do you need to be Afraid of a Grizzly?

Well, the question is a bit tricky because as a human you should always be afraid of a grizzly. But I want to introduce you folks to another kind of Grizzly; Fear can stay at Home.
I’m talking about “Fumoir Grizzly Inc” a Quebec company founded in 1991 by Pierre Fountain who was an outdoor enthusiast and started the firm with smoked salmon. Yes, the wild ones, so I can assume Pierre was afraid of grizzly’s when he saw them.
Thus, the reason for the circles on the packaging, the “Grizzly Claws”.
Brian, on his hunt for delicate ingredients and quality products for Canarbo, sourced Fumoir Grizzly Inc. to introduce to Bonaire and larger variety of smoked products with salmon and tuna.
Beautifull products, 3 different categories ready-made salmon and tuna tartare (with their own marinades), salmon and tuna burgers and smoked salmon (Atlantic Ocean, Coho and Sockeye).
After having tasted the salmon tartare, with a marinade included, it was very rich of taste. So first I made it following the instructions on the package. Nice and soft, quite impressive. Equally, you can create your own signature, so decided to try with some fine grated ginger, a dash of lime, fresh chopped mint and boiled mustard seed (crack them after boiling). For the tuna tartare I used cilantro, fried sesame seeds, oil from sesame and olive, a dash of squeezed lime and some seaweed. Lovely combination.
But I also found out that when you make spaghetti with salted butter and rucola, you can use the tartare from salmon as a finishing touch. Don’t cook the salmon, just put it at room temperature on the pasta and stir, the heat from the pasta takes care of the rest. Fine fresh chopped tomato’s and a little bit of hot sauce. It’s a killer.
So.. Do you need to be afraid of a Grizzly? Eee yaaa once you start to use it, you can’t stop 😊 Enjoy the Epicurean life style!

Blog #1: Epicurean

Brian from Canarbo, asked if I would be interested to write a Blog and the person as I am directly said YES wonderful, I do! But there the trouble starts..
1. I am not a writer, more an explainer and someone who loves (Italian) food and to enjoy life.
2. Writing a Blog is the opposite of who I am. I´ll give you an example; Writers think (a long time) about what they want to write and I am the opposite. Taste, WOW, read, tell and explain.
But, if you say Yes, especially to a (food) friend then your going to do it. So for this first blog I want to talk about EPICUREAN.

For a whole lot of the living people on our planet We, the people, don’t use the word EPICUREAN and for a whole lot of people we do not even know the word. Well let me tell you this; The word EPICUREAN is nothing more or lesser than the ENJOYER, who loves ENJOYING.

A few years ago, 341 -270 BC an Acient Greek philosopher who was living on the island, Samos in Greece had the idea that “If you want to be happy, you need to Enjoy”. His name was Epicurus.
Now the words “If you want to be happy, you need to Enjoy” are a bit short. So let us translate it to the 2024: Live- Enjoy, person with fine taste, person who likes luxury, person who’s want to give him/ her the best for themselves and others.
There is a movement about it, I didn’t know, they are Epicurists, followers of the Epicurean life style.
What that exactly means and how you become a follower of it, I really don’t know.
The only thing I know about Canarbo, is that they LOVE quality. Quality that gives one’s life, fun and enjoyment! They want that, on our tiny Island of Bonaire, you have the opportunity to enjoy it too. If you are a Chef, a Master, an Enjoyer, a Housewife or a House Man. CANARBO is there for everyone like Epicurus said:
“If you want to be Happy, You need to Enjoy".

Welcome to CANARBO.
