Seriously photo-shy: absorbing more than 99.5 per cent of light, the skin of these deep-sea fish is one of the blackest materials known.

"Light doesn’t bounce back; light doesn’t go through. It just goes into this layer, and it’s gone," says zoologist Dr Karen Osborn.

These fish live at depths that sunlight can't reach, but where many creatures that create their own light by bioluminescence lurk. There, hiding in the dark means survival for both predators and prey.

The fish achieve the effect with a continuous layer of tightly packed pigment cells. Scientists have identified at least 16 species of fishes with this ultra-black skin in research published this month.

Turtles everywhere! 😍🐢🐢🐢

This is the largest aggregation of turtles Queensland researchers say they've seen at Raine Island, off the tip of Cape York.

Drones helped them estimate there were about 64,000 green turtles waiting to nest on the island last December.

They published research this week in the PLOS ONE scientific journal finding drones were a much easier, safer and more accurate way of surveying turtles than counting them from boats.

Deep Down You Want The Best! 💦

Merimbula Divers Lodge

So, next year after all this blows over, we’re going to Palau.
We were supposed to go live-aboard diving in the Solomon Islands then, but well now be going in 2022.
If we can, we’re going to Lady Elliot Island, here in Queensland, later this year.
We are going to book a trip on Indo Siren when we can.

Now, where else do we want to go?

Ok.
So we’re not on the list of places that have to close, but as much as diving is great fun, we’re not essential.
So, we have made the decision to close until things have eased.
If you do need to contact us:
Message us here on Facebook; or,
Email [email protected].

In the meantime, stay safe and, if at all possible, stay home.

Ok, the restriction that the offer is for one male and one female suit I find disagreeable, especially after the great battle we had over marriage equality relatively recently, but anyway, this offer from Scubapro:

AT LAST!
Visibility is looking pretty good down at Merimbula Wharf this morning. Its a grey, overcast day (I didn't get a photo this morning, this one is from a few days ago) so if you're doing a dive there today, take a torch.
We are expecting rain later today and/or tomorrow, so we will have to wait and see what the weekend brings.

Well, it’s been a harrowing couple of months for diving on the Sapphire coast.
First we had bushfires, then we had floods. The fires are now mostly out, we’re not in flood now, but we are continuing to get frequent rain to varying degrees.
Between these extremes, the effect on visibility has been dramatic; hovering around 1m at the moment. Right now, the swell is up over the rocks and that is not likely to improve until at least Sunday.
We will be checking the conditions every morning but, realistically, it’s highly doubtful we will be diving this weekend.

Sapphire Coast NSW

Our beautiful region has been impacted by the NSW fires and right now, on the advice of NSW RFS we’re asking visitors to delay their plans just for the moment. But when we’re ready to welcome you back, you’ll be the first to know. Sincere thanks for all your messages of support. It means a lot to the people of the Sapphire Coast and we look forward to greeting new visitors and old friends back into our region just as soon as we can.
