Our Dove Lake Kayak tour puts you smack bang in the guts of one of Australia's most iconic wilderness landscapes. And to make it extra special, you'll be in a kayak we've made with our own little hands from King Billy pine.
King Billy pine is a very special Tasmanian timber. It is only found on our lovely little island, and it has been illegal to cut it down for decades. A saw mill on west coast Tas has a shed containing " the last King Billy in captivity". It was harvested in the '60s and was the source of the timber we have made these kayaks from.
As a historical link, Gustav Weindorfer took people on Dove Lake in a King Billy pine boat 100 years ago - one of Tasmania's first adventure tourism products.
At the end of the lake, we make a cup of tea and take a stroll into the Ballroom Forest to see some ancient King Billys that have been watching over Cradle Mountain for more than 1000 years.
This has been a labour of love for us, with about 200 hours of work going into each boat. The kayak design by @guillemotkayaks is beautiful, stable and a joy to paddle.
It's a treat for us to get people out on the lake in these kayaks. Please join us for a paddle sometime soon!

We very often have a platypus cruising around in front of us as we have dinner at camp on night one of our three day packrafting trips. Never had an echidna though - until two days ago.
This spot doesn't have an official name. I usually call it Mini Veranda Cliffs (because it's similar to the Veranda Cliffs on the Franklin). Maybe Monotreme Alley is better?
How many people can we fit behind Freestyle Falls?
Sunny, low water conditions at Cradle Mountain mean we're able to get in behind a few of our unique waterfalls. If this November has been anything to go by, we'll have a beautiful, hot and sunny December ahead! There's still space available for our Dove Canyon tours through December!

What even is canyoning? This clip from Dove Canyon will give you the idea.
I've tried various techniques for bending timber while building these kayaks. This very simple method, suggested to us by Ray from Distinctive Timbers Tasmania, turns out to be the best, at least with the timbers we use. Here I'm bending some myrtle for the cockpit coming. Myrtle is harder and bends easier than King Billy, so I've used it in a few places on the kayaks.

We've got space on our March 3 packrafting trip (three days). All other packrafting trips are booked out for the rest of the season, so if you want to get on one, this is your chance.
Check out our latest promo vid of Alum Cliffs packrafting to get you in the mood. Please watch with the volume up to enjoy the lovely tune Banjo Serendipity by the lovely Kenna Reid-Clark
After some cancellations we've got space on the Dec 9 and 16 three day packrafting trips. A better weekend in the Tassie Wilds you would struggle to find. Would love for you to join us.

Katy coming over Horsey Falls yesterday. Footage is wobbly because I had my eye on the rope bag as it was about to drift over the next waterfall! Finally got some high water after a very dry summer.

We got out for the final full dress rehearsal of our new packrafting adventure with good friends last weekend. Here's a quick edit of the footage we got, set to some funky royalty free tunes from the interwebs ('Urban Hip Hop Boom Bap', in case you were wondering).
Next trip is December 3 and, due to the borders being closed to NSW, there are a few spots still available.
We're very excited to be running this three day trip this year. Check out our website for more info.
