The Desert
By Mandy Wright (September 2024)

A desert crossing takes your breath away.
An adventure not for the faint of heart,
But with Tiny Allwright you’ll be ok.
And being well prepared is also smart .

The beauty though is an effort worth taking.
Huge red sand dunes and lakes of sparkling white salt.
Isolated ruins show long gone makings
Of a life of hard work which came to a halt.

Oasis’s in the deserts are far and few.
So one must take advantage to explore.
Old bores , shade trees or water holes a must stop to view.
And Permits and high flags are needed by law.

Tracks in the hot sand, show signs of life harsh,
Though keep hidden from heat and higher prey . Vegetation is varied and sparse
Changing Seasons shows its the desert way .

Look carefully, wildflowers will delight.
purple ,pink, yellow , white and maybe blue.
Some lizards, bugs and snakes
wander at night .
While camels and dingos watch just out of view.

Simpsons QAA lines famous big red,
Dares all to put the peddle to the metal,
To reach its peak in one go, so it’s said.
Here is where many a wager is settled.

One must traverse many roads Lines and tracks,
The French, Madigan, Q & WAA Lines,
The Rig & Knolls Road, Coleson & Binns Tracks .
Always different views to see in front and behind.

Endless tracks challenges ones driving skills.
Tumble weeds and sand devils dance in the wind.
stars in the dark night sky keeps your soul still,
Convincing your explorers heart to sing .

If Vincent van Gogh was born in Australia we would most definitely have Glen Helen Gorge paintings hanging in museums all over the world. Golden hour (either morning or evening) provides the best light to admire colour palette of Glen Helen Gorge’s landscape. Local flora’s greens and yellows, Finke River’s blue, and orange rocks create just the right kind of scenery for a great photo. Or a painting.

Glen Helen Gorge doesn't allow camping at the moment but the Gorge can be visited and it is accessible by all vehicles.
