Thursday, 11th July - Avignon

Avignon, a city in southeastern France’s Provence region, is set on the Rhône River. From 1309 to 1377, it was the seat of the Catholic popes. It remained under papal rule until becoming part of France in 1791. This legacy can be seen in the massive Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace) in the city center, which is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts.

Avignon was our last stop in the Provence region so we decided to get on the bikes and ride around the countryside. Lucky we got an early start and it turned out to be a very hot day (it got to 40!!). After all that much needed exercise it was back to the boat for a quick freshen up before heading out to explore the town. There was a festival happening so there was a great atmosphere. After lunch we headed to Chateauneuf de Pape a historic wine region for some wine tasting. I was very excited to taste the wines especially their full bodied red wine largely made from the classic southern Rhône grape trio of Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre.

We then headed up to the top of the village to see the remains of what was left of the actual castle which was ruined during the Second World War.

Back to the ship for happy hour and dinner before enjoying the Ferris Wheel beside the ship before heading to bed.

Our days are so full with amazing activities, sights and experiences.

Avalon Waterways River Cruise - Burgundy to Provence 9 + 10 July

Time for me to catch you all up a little on our adventure.

After leaving Rome on Tuesday Joel and I landed in Marseille for our River cruise with Avalon - Onboard Poetry II.

We were picked up at the airport in a lovey private car and driven to Arles. Once we were onboard we had a light lunch and maybe a few glasses of bubbles.

Wednesday we had olive oil tasting that also stopped at a small village called Les Baux-de-Provence which was amazing. The town is built into the cliffs and is very picturesque.
The towns don’t open until 10am but it’s best to get out early to avoid the crowds and the heat.
We then headed back to where the ship was docked and had a walking tours around Arles which was another really cool town.

Ciao from Rome
Visiting Rome can feel like a whirlwind but if you take it a little slower you will discover lots of hidden surprises. Trastevere comes alive at night with lots of authentic eateries and locals playing music on every second corner. Then there is the history from the Pantheon to the Colosseum and so much more in between. You can’t forget about the food pizza, pasta and if you don’t end the night with a sweet treat you are missing out.

- I highly recommend visiting the Trevi fountain …. Wait for it …. at first daylight so in summer 5am. The crowds are minimal at this time and you can get some fabulous photos.
- We stayed Boutique Hotel Trevi which is part of the Leonardi Hotels chain. The staff were extremely helpful and the hotel was lovely in a great spot. Our room was a great size by European standards. We even had a small balcony.
- Some dinner recommendations include Otello Alla Concordia which is close to the Spanish steps. Close to the Trevi Fountain try out L’archetto for authentic pizza and pasta for a great price.
- I also highly recommend the pasta making class with Walks we had so much fun and he meal was delicious

3 Days in Florence the Capital of the Tuscany Region
Well here we just couldn’t get our bearings 😂 We walked around in circles got lost but still managed to see so much.
* We stayed at Hotel Botticelli Florence Italy and we loved it. It is very close to the Mercato Centrale which is a huge food market. Defiantly try to eat downstairs for more authentic food the fresh made pasta from La Primeria by FN Pasta Fresca was amazing.
* I would highly recommend Taste Florence Food Tours …. It is a great way to find the best gelato, pastries and hidden local wine bars. PS Don’t have much breakfast before the tour …….OMG you eat so much 😂
* Walks Italy tour to Chianti, Siena and Sam Gimignano is also a great way to escape the city and experience an authentic Tuscan Villa for lunch. I could have stayed forever at Poggio Amorelli
* There are so many things to see and do so pack your walking shoes. While we were lost😆 we stumbled upon Saporitoscanistreetfood a sandwich bar that from the steet didn’t look much but ohhhh it was delicious
* And don’t forget to find a wine window to rehydrate as you wander around

If you are heading to Europe I would defiantly add Belgium to your list.
So much to see and do and if you base yourself in Brussels so many other towns are within easy reach on the train.

Our Time in Belgium
* The location of the Hotel Warwick Brussels was amazing in Brussels. Within walking distance of The Grand-Place and other the major sites. Also central station is right around the corner which is excellent for day trips to Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp.
* Head to Chutneys Bar and Restaurant for a delicious dinner. You have to try the muscles but they also have other authentic Belgium dishes.
* Don’t forget to try some Belgium Chocolates, waffles and of course beer. You can’t miss out on the frites either with andalouse sauce. Best place to try is at Friterie Tabora.
* We took the train to Bruges and spent the whole day walking around taking in the beautiful sites. You can also take a canal boat cruise and to give your poor feet a rest check out Duvelorium Belgian Beer Bar for a sneaky beer and a great view of the main square.
* Next stop Ghent you can do Bruges and Ghent in 1 day but that would be a huge day so we decided to do it as a seperate day trip. Once again Ghent was very scenic medieval town . Don’t miss a walk around Gravensteen Castle, Saint Michael’s Bridge and a leisurely scenic canal boat ride.
