The SOUTH EAST QLD SPECIES ORCHID SOCIETY meets every 4th Tuesday of the month at 7 pm in the Senior Citizens Hall, the corner of Ferry & Mylor streets in Nerang Qld on the gold coast. We are a long standing Species orchid society that has monthly meetings along with species orchid plant benching. We participate in regular bus trips to Orchid Shows, Orchid nurseries, & hold regular special events

like, Christmas in August & our Annual Species Orchid show and Plant sales day

The Nancy Murphy Trophy was awarded to Helen Wong’s Lepanthus teliponigonora.

Judges Choice went to Gary Yong Gee’s Trichoglottis orchidea, a genus of about 60 species growing on the Asian mainland.

Coelogyne speciosa was benched by Gary Yong Gee. The species has a habitat in rainforests of the Malay archipelago islands.

The Culture Award went to Helen Wong’s well-flowered Isochilus linearis, a species widespread in tropical American lowlands.

Sally Ashton benched this Epidendrum corifolium, a species endemic to Guatemala where it grows on trees and rocks at low to moderate altitudes.

Jason Searle benched Cattleya percivaliana, a species native to Venezuela, where it grows as a lithophyte on rocks near rivers.

Pterostylis collina was benched by John Roberts, a species native to eastern Australia.

Dendrobium dickasonii, also known as inversum, was benched by Roland Wells and won the Nancy Murphy Trophy. This species is native to Thailand, Myanmar, and the Assam region of northeast India.

Cestichis (Liparis) latifolia was benched by Gary Yong Gee and won Judges Choice and Culture awards. This species is widely distributed over southern China, Southeast Asia, Timor and New Guinea where it grows in rainforests at altitudes of 250-1700m.

John Roberts showed a deep red Dendrochilum saccolabium, native to the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte in forests at altitudes of 200-350 m.

SESOS awarded the Nancy Murphy trophy to Jason Searle’s Vanda sanderiana, endemic to the Philippines. Many people believe this orchid species is critically endangered due to overcollecting and deforestation.

Judges Choice and Culture Awards went to Gary Yong Gee’s Cestichis (Liparis) condylobulbon, a huge specimen and full of flowers. This species is widespread from Thailand to Fiji, the Philippines, Taiwan and most places in between.

One of the smallest in the species, Dendrochilum parvulum is found only in the Philippines. Gary Yong Gee won the Nancy Murphy Award for this one.

This Sobralia decora didn’t make the SESOS meeting because it bloomed the day before and the flowers only last one day! It grows from Mexico through Central America and is often called the beautiful Sobralia.
