The Australian Heritage Festival is an annual event that connects the country by immersing you in the rich and diverse heritage our country has to offer. For more than 40 years, Western Australians have taken part by hosting special exhibitions, tours, talks, demonstrations, interactive displays, and so much more. Each event is a wonderful interpretation of heritage and culture from around our great state.
The festival, which will take place from 18 April to 19 May 2024, celebrates and reflects on the state's natural and cultural heritage. We invite everyone to be curious about our shared histories and tales of people, places, and cultures so that together, Australians might share even more stories and connections than ever before.
As you travel through the Goldfields, join in on the special events created for the 2024 festival.

Welcome to Australia’s largest inclusive celebration of all things heritage.

Site #24 - Broad Arrow
Located about 20 minutes from Kalgoorlie, the Broad Arrow pub is one of a few buildings that have remained intact from this town's heyday.
Some call this an outback pub; some call it a ghost town. But the locals affectionately call it the Broadie and visit often for a Broadie burger and cold beer.

Site 6 // Menzies
The official grand opening of the Kalgoorlie-Menzies railway took place in March 1898. It was held in one of the newly completed railway sheds. It was to have been at the Maori Hotel, but it and two other hotels burned down only days before the opening festivities which caused an accommodation crisis leaving many visitors bunking down in the railway carriages for the night.

SITE 14: Where in the world is Windarra?

Mt. Windarra is a lookout spot 27 kilometeres NE of Laverton in Western Australia. The popular picnic spot offers 360 degree views of our rugged outback landscape, perfect for the travelling photographer.

Formerly a Nickel minesite, Windarra is known in history as the unfortunate result of The Poseidon Nickel stock exchange crash. Was it inside trading or loose lips at the Laverton pub that caused the share price of Poseidon NL to spike tremendously and then crash?
The mine operated until 1994 and has since faced a massive rehabilitation effort which makes for a pleasant stop point along your travels.

- Mt. Charlotte

On January the 24th of 1903 crowds gathered at Mt. Charlotte in Kalgoorlie as the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme was 'turned on' by the WA Premier Lord John Forrest.

To learn more about this engineering feat and the impact that this scheme meant for the development of the outback, head on over to the Golden Pipeline website. It's an interactive site with lots of historical information and things to see and do on your way to or from the Goldfields.

SITE 4: SIBERIA

Far from the Northern Pole, the Goldfields own Siberia was established as a Gold Rush settlement in 1893, did you know it was actually officially gazetted as 'Waverly' in 1898?
The locals were used to the original name and so it stuck!

This historic site offers a nice stop along the trail and holds the most heartbreaking story along our Golden Quest Discovery Trail. Mother, and wife of publican, Mabel Kirkham planted a bougainvillea outside the Reward Hotel to commemorate the passing of their baby boy, James. The purple flowering plant still thrives today even though the town is empty. You can sign the guest book at the memorial site.
