The First Nations Experience of Pentridge Prison with Chris Austin
The tour will explore B-Division and alongside a National Trust guide, Chris will talk about his experience as an inmate at Pentridge and how he came to use art to express the culture of First Nations people and their experience of incarceration.

Did you know that the Pentridge Prison we know today was preceded by earlier penal establishment, known as Pentridge Stockade? 🗝️
First established in late 1850 by Samuel Barrow, the Pentridge Stockade was an ad-hoc group of structures built by prison labour using mostly local materials.
The ‘temporary’ stockade that Barrow was responsible for covered forty-three acres and was located five miles north of Melbourne close to the village of Pentridge – known to us today as Coburg.
Authorities felt the location was ideal, being close to abundant quantities of basalt or bluestone and distant enough from Melbourne.
There, prisoners were housed in huts on wheels, slept on wooden benches, worked in heavy chains breaking rock and building roads and were forced to eat standing outside in all weather.

During a theatre performance of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in the A Division Mess Hall, armed robber Peter Patrick Clune disguised himself in women’s clothes and a wig, which a friend had smuggled in for him. Remarkably, he walked right out of the prison. Clune was recaptured in Sydney seven months later.
