🎪 Did you know that in 1975, a circus performed inside the walls at Pentridge Prison?! The stars of the show were Tin Pin the clown, Sheba, the Bengal tiger and Bambi and Arna the elephants.

How did the elephants get into Pentridge you may wonder? They had to be unloaded to fit through the prison’s main gate. 150 prisoners attended the one-hour performance of Tommy Hanlon-Perry Bros Circus.

All prisoners, except those in A, J and the remand divisions were allowed to attend the circus show. Many were unable to join in as the event clashed with visiting hours and a concurrent cricket match.

Did you know that following the Stawell Royal Commission (an investigation into prisons and their treatments of inmates) in 1870, a major overhaul was implemented at Pentridge Prison? The reformation introduced an extensive work program known as ‘The Industries,’ which aimed to transform prisoners’ lives through meaningful work. 🛠️🔨

This initiative included:
🌳 A timber yard
🧵 A woollen mill
🔨 Carpentry
⚒️ Blacksmithing
🧵 Tailoring
👢 Bootmaking

And that’s how Industry Lane at Pentridge got its name!

Swipe to see historical images of the Pentridge Penal Establishment and its industries such as The Taylors’ Shop and Prisoners Spinning Woollen Yarn in 1867.

Did you know that in 1851, Victoria had just 29 prisoners? By 1853, that number soared to 955, causing severe overcrowding. To manage this, the government converted large sailing ships into prison hulks. The Success, once a hulk for female prisoners, later transformed into a floating exhibition on convict transportation in 1890. 🚢

Did you know that the iconic Merri Creek Bridge has a fascinating story dating back to 1865! Constructed by prisoners from the nearby former Pentridge Prison, this historical landmark stands as a testament to Victoria’s past.

Under the oversight of William Champ, the third Inspector General of Penal Establishments, this bridge was built during an era that shaped the landscape of Pentridge. Many of the distinctive buildings you see at Pentridge Coburg today were crafted under Champ’s administration.

Unique in its origins, the Merri Creek Bridge is one of the few remaining public works constructed by penal labor. Champ’s legacy is honoured with his name inscribed on a foundation stone of the bridge.

Recognised for its historical significance, the bridge was added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 1982.

Did you know Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly was just 18 when he began his time in the former Pentridge Prison? He was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment in B Division for receiving a stolen horse.

On 25 June 1873, he moved to the prison hulk Sacramento. Despite a brief stint in solitary for sharing his to***co ration, he was seen as a model prisoner. Returning to Pentridge Prison after three months, Ned was released early in February 1874, serving two and a half years of his original sentence. 🏛️

In the confines of the former Pentridge Prison, many prisoners displayed considerable artistic talent whilst locked away in the solitude of their cells. One such prisoner was William Stanford, also known as the prison sculptor. He was once an apprentice stonemason in London whose journey led him to Melbourne’s troubled streets and eventually behind bars.

Despite his circumstances, Stanford channeled his talent into something extraordinary. With nothing but bluestone and determination, he meticulously carved a stunning fountain during his incarceration. Today, his masterpiece graces Gordon Reserve near the State Parliament buildings, a testament to resilience and artistry enduring through time.

Did you know that the former Pentridge Prison had swimming pools? There was a pool at Pentridge Square for B and E Division prisoners, at the same location as where the water play area is today. The female prisoners who were housed at Pentridge Prison for a few years in the 1980s also had a pool in the exercise yard of B Annex. 🏊‍♂️
