If you love white bricks, Petersen Tegl's handmade K11 brick comes pretty close. And up close you can see these bricks are genuinely handmade - no brick is identical, their perfect imperfections make the wall surfaces look alive. At this home in Belgium, recessed joints provide a delicate relief effect, adding to the textural beauty.

Custom Poesia glass bricks deliver a magnificent double-height entry portal at Southworks, with a mixture of polished and mottled textures. The change in materiality and texture from masonry to glass creates a focal point at the façade’s centre, delivering a warm and inviting welcome, with internal lighting softly filtering through the translucent glass skin.

“Southworks is a project we’re really proud of; the glass bricks are all individually cast from specific moulds we created to follow the geometry of the curved and straight roman bricks. They were handmade and designed to a highly accurate tolerance so that the horizontal joint of 4mm finished exactly at the half way point of the horizontal masonry joints, which were around 10-12mm,” says Pietro Guarino, Director, Poesia Glass Studio.

Creating a flexible work environment promoting movement was a central component of FIGR.’s design. This was achieved using Aluminium brick tiles to create a series of internal streets to define the flexible work spaces , which are positioned on the external perimeter so everyone gets views to the sky and external context:

“We’ve established these internal laneways and streets, so they become zones that allow for flexible working arrangements where people can plug and play ... and the Aluminium brick tiles making it look soft and inviting; especially where there’s no direct light on these materials, we always look to use a more natural material and tone." Victoria & Vine’s warehouse-style design references New York’s Meatpacking district, delivered in quintessential Collingwood style. Robertson Façade Systems supplied the Brick Inlay panels and brick tiles in a range of hues from Rustic Red, to Grey and Iron Mountain, reflecting the tones and textures of the neighbouring buildings.

““The great thing about Robertsons is they understood where brick has come from … each of the palettes helps us represent the history to what it was, to what we want in terms of the materiality, the history of the tone and textures of inner city Melbourne. The tones and colours were already there for us to work with, so we could just select them,”.” Philip Rowe, Director,

Creating custom bricks is a specialty and passion at - the facade of the Museum de Lakenhal is a great example. Happel Cornelisse Architects worked closely with Petersen Tegl to develop the 13 different moulded bricks needed to accompany the Petersen D190 bricks for the facade:

"We wanted to create a building without ornamentation, but which is ornamental in its materialisation. We chose to create a sawtooth pattern of moulded brick, angles at 30 degrees, each brick with almost the same shape as a small house. This is a north facade, which gets morning and evening sun, so the 30 degree angles lets the facade catch the light." Ninke Happel, Architect, @

Petersen Kolumba™ (K91) create a seamless flow moving from the externals to internals at Brighton House, fitting low maintenance requirements and delivering an indoor/outdoor feel. The warmth of the handmade bricks greets you at the front and wraps into the hallway, where you look straight to the external courtyard’s backdrop of Petersen bricks.

“It’s such a beautiful material, really luxurious – everything the house needed; it gave it a bit of dressing but was subtle, so perfect for what Julie wanted. We felt it was so precious, and if you use it everywhere you can sometimes lose that. So it was a balancing act - not using it everywhere and diluting it, but using it in enough spots so it’s a key feature because it is so special and textural,” Kate Perry, architect.

Aluminium brick tiles create internal laneways and chance encounters at ICON HQ in Richmond.

“The Aluminium brick tiles had a really nice tone, which was soft on the eye, and they had a handmade quality about them. It felt like they were less of a production line material, and had more of a handmade aesthetic to them." Adi Atic, Founder & Director, FIGR.

Handmade Petersen Kolumba bricks create a sophisticated inner-city sanctuary in South Yarra. Bricks dominate the external palette, this beautiful façade of handmade Petersen Kolumba™ (K91) bricks adding a sense of solidity and timelessness to each townhouse.

"I particularly love the organic texture, colour and slenderness of the brick, and feel that the flush mortar joints complement the bricks so well,” George Nedovic.

The zigzag wall at Encore Cremorne with its simple palette of glass and bricks. Placing a zig zag glass curtain directly above a heritage facade makes it modern and distinct from the red brick. To bridge the gap between the two, Midnight Blue brick tiles on Brick Inlay panels offer a textural similarity, yet different finish to the red heritage brick. It’s a perfect combination.

The tactility and artistic quality of handmade Petersen Kolumba™ bricks are a standout at Hawthorn Grove, delivering a modern design while giving a nod to tradition. Featuring Kolumba™ bricks cut into thirds to deliver this magnificent curve. Stunning at every angle.

“The Petersen Kolumba™ (K50) bricks (or Petersen Bricks in general) are a favourite of ours, and were the perfect fit for a new home in a heritage neighbourhood. The traditional method of manufacture of these bricks ties in perfectly with the more than century old area,” Matt Herbert.

The Pierres Blanches Cultural Centre is a great example of outstanding, well-considered design. Though a single structure, the varying heights and sloping rooves make it look like a tight cluster of building, from the outside.

It features the pale yellow Petersen D71 brick, used in three different ways, all of which goes down to the ground level: a closed Flemish bond, relief brickwork and a 'mashrabiya' or latticework for ventilation, based on an Arab model.

At St Francis Xavier College’s General Purpose Flexible Learning Area, creating a robust external façade, with undulating walls, was made simple and efficient with Brick Inlay. Featuring a beautiful combination of glazed green tiles and Rustic Grey brick tiles.

“Brick Inlay is great, it’s easier and it’s quick. The building is in the centre of the school so with Brick Inlay, you can get in, install and leave quickly, speeding up onsite time because everything is built offsite in the factory,” Cat Macleod, Bellemo & Cat.

Our Custom Curved Board Form Concrete Panels give a warm nod to The Works’ industrial heritage.

“We used the concrete, because it has an industrial feel, and then we wanted to bring the natural element of timber, or grain, to it to give it that connection. So we worked closely with Peter Robertson to create the custom panels we were looking for and did the casting, so that was a real treat... It’s a really great result, the light looks good on it, it's got the right kind of shadow. I wanted that feeling of warmth, industry and handmade touch, and that’s what it has," Gavin Harris, Futurespace.

Berengarra means ‘the land around Kew’, a name worked on closely with Wurundjeri Elder Gail Smith and The St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Aboriginal Health Unit. Fittingly, at Berengarra Aged Care, the building’s curved panels of brickwork and precast concrete not only add warmth and soften the façade, but sit well within the residential environment, referencing the architecture of Kew.

The facade was created with Brick Inlay and features Ash Grey and Iron Mountains brick tiles, at times in striking, alternating panels.
