๐ŸŒŸ Junior Council โ€“ Engaging young minds in Local Governance ๐ŸŒŸ

Hobsons Bay City Council's Junior Council initiative engages primary school students in hands-on learning about local governance and community involvement. These monthly meetings provide students with the unique opportunity to meet the Mayor and other Councillors, participate in discussions, hear from guest speakers, and develop leadership skills.

This year, weโ€™ve welcomed 130 attendees so far, with another 45 registered for our upcoming September meeting! Thank you to all the participating schools for your enthusiasm and commitment. ๐ŸŽ‰

Hereโ€™s to many more years of inspiring young minds and fostering a strong sense of community in Hobsons Bay! ๐Ÿซ

๐Ÿ‘ท A sod turning ceremony has kicked off early works for the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre. By the end of September, we will have completed earthworks and planted around a whopping 14,000 native plants!

During this time there will be no access to the fenced-off area at HD Graham Reserve. The surrounding sporting grounds will not be impacted.

๐Ÿค Working with the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre committee, the project aims to deliver a hub for learning, research, and community fun focused on conservation. We are actively seeking partnerships to help us bring this vision to life.

We're excited to announce that the redevelopment of H.C Kim Reserve is now complete.

The works included reconstructing one pitch and upgrading irrigation on two other pitches, as well as constructing a new pavilion containing six change rooms, referee facilities, first aid room, storage, a social space, and kitchen.

Have your say and help the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action shape the Port Phillip Bay western shoreline.

Weโ€™re excited to launch Adapt West โ€“ a strategic planning project that will guide how we adapt to flooding, erosion and groundwater changes along the Port Phillip Bay western shoreline.

Stretching from Williamstown to Avalon, we want to hear from everyone who lives, works, plays in or has a connection to the western shoreline.

๐ŸŒŠ The Adapt West project will bring together community aspirations, the latest science and technical assessments to develop a long-term plan to manage our changing shorelines.

๐Ÿ’• Let us know what is important to you about the coast, your experiences of coastal change and your ideas for adapting for the future.

๐ŸŽฏ While our Olympians are aiming for history in Paris, we have our very own piece here in Williamstown. The Merrett Rifle Range Pavilion, located on Kororoit Creek Road!

Constructed around 1880, it stands as one of the rare surviving structures from the early development of rifle ranges in Victoria. It played a crucial role in training volunteers for colonial defense and later became a significant site for rifle shooting sports. It was close to the sea, with no walls for bullets that missed the targets, creating some near misses in its history.

๐Ÿ… In 1956, the range was used for shooting events during the Melbourne Olympic Games, marking its place in international sports history. The Soviet Union dominated, winning three of the seven events.

In the early 1990s the pavilion was restored and converted into a funeral parlour. The rifle range was closed in 1987 and is now a housing estate.

Thanks to partners Western Bulldogs Community Foundation and support provided by Workforce Australia, 75 exhibitors descended on Grazeland to offer advice and mentorship, provide resume support, and promote opportunities available in the west.
