Hobsons Bay City Council's Junior Council initiative engages primary school students in hands-on learning about local governance and community involvement. These monthly meetings provide students with the unique opportunity to meet the Mayor and other Councillors, participate in discussions, hear from guest speakers, and develop leadership skills.
This year, we’ve welcomed 130 attendees so far, with another 45 registered for our upcoming September meeting! Thank you to all the participating schools for your enthusiasm and commitment. 🎉

👷 A sod turning ceremony has kicked off early works for the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre. By the end of September, we will have completed earthworks and planted around a whopping 14,000 native plants!
During this time there will be no access to the fenced-off area at HD Graham Reserve. The surrounding sporting grounds will not be impacted.
🤝 Working with the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre committee, the project aims to deliver a hub for learning, research, and community fun focused on conservation. We are actively seeking partnerships to help us bring this vision to life.

We're excited to announce that the redevelopment of H.C Kim Reserve is now complete.
The works included reconstructing one pitch and upgrading irrigation on two other pitches, as well as constructing a new pavilion containing six change rooms, referee facilities, first aid room, storage, a social space, and kitchen.
We received funding support from the Victorian State Government for the project, which was officially opened on 24 July by Cr Tony Briffa and Melissa Horne MP.
🌳🙌 Our community's passion for conservation is truly infectious. A big thank you to the community members who braved the wet and cold weather to celebrate National Tree Day recently.

🦘🏃 Celeste Mucci from Seaholme will be competing in the women's 100m hurdles tomorrow. Celeste developed her powerful athletic abilities at Williamstown Athletics Club since she was 12.

Stage 1 works have begun on the Altona Beach Entry Project and will be completed by December 2024, weather permitting.
Once the works are completed, you can enjoy a new pedestrian promenade, upgraded sea wall, improved lighting and landscape enhancements.
The project is part of our Open Space Strategy and is supported by funding from the Victorian Government.

🎯 While our Olympians are aiming for history in Paris, we have our very own piece here in Williamstown. The Merrett Rifle Range Pavilion, located on Kororoit Creek Road!
Constructed around 1880, it stands as one of the rare surviving structures from the early development of rifle ranges in Victoria. It played a crucial role in training volunteers for colonial defense and later became a significant site for rifle shooting sports. It was close to the sea, with no walls for bullets that missed the targets, creating some near misses in its history.
🏅 In 1956, the range was used for shooting events during the Melbourne Olympic Games, marking its place in international sports history. The Soviet Union dominated, winning three of the seven events.
In the early 1990s the pavilion was restored and converted into a funeral parlour. The rifle range was closed in 1987 and is now a housing estate.
🤝 Helping people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities find their way into work is one of our top priorities. Last Friday, our Pathways to Work Expo saw people looking for a little extra help get started on their career journey.
Thanks to partners Western Bulldogs Community Foundation and support provided by Workforce Australia, 75 exhibitors descended on Grazeland to offer advice and mentorship, provide resume support, and promote opportunities available in the west.

🌳 Council’s Green Industries program is all about teaming up with businesses to green up the industrial zones in Hobsons Bay. This initiative not only beautifies our open spaces, but also helps cool our industrial areas, improves air quality and enhances the overall well-being of our community.

⛸️ That’s a wrap on Winter in Williamstown! With over 7,500 ice-skating tickets sold, this event was a hit, featuring nightly projections, additional weekend light projections, DJs, LED hoola hooping, dancing and interactive theatre.
❄️ Council is investing in our commitment to revitalise local cafes, restaurants and shops and it was great to see so many people enjoying Nelson Place, Gem Pier, Commonwealth Reserve and our local eateries, despite the winter chill.

Council last night adopted the 2022-23 Annual Report, which outlines the achievements, activities and financial performance of the past financial year. This includes investing $59 million in capital works projects such as Donald McLean Reserve in Spotswood, upgrading six parks in Laverton and refurbishing Crofts Reserve in Altona North. Registrations are open for free 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten in 2024! Three-year-old kindergarten program hours will vary from service to service, providing families with between 5 and 15 hours each week. Four-year-old kindergarten is available for 15 hours per week. First-round offers begin July for 4-year-old kindergarten and August for 3-year-old kindergarten. 🔥 Ecological control burns are scheduled from 30 March to 30 April, weather permitting, at the Maidstone Street and Horsburgh Drive grasslands. Planned burns help maintain and increase native plant species and control weeds. It also helps regenerate grasslands, which support endangered fauna such as the striped legless lizard 🦎 and the golden sun moth. 🦋 All efforts will be made to reduce smoke and minimise any hazards. Operations are generally completed within the same day, with follow-up monitoring to ensure the site remains safe and the fire is fully extinguished. On the day, Council has fire-fighting vehicles and trained staff present. Ecological burns are guided by our biodiversity strategy.
