Baby Sleep with Sarah Rhodes

Baby Sleep with Sarah Rhodes Baby sleep specialist based in Perth helping little ones to settle with little to no fuss, sleep wel For example plumbing.
(33)

One lesson we learnt from renovating our own house; it's so much easier when you get someone experienced in to do the job. Unless you are a plumber, it can be very tricky to fix a leaking tap. It could take you days, weeks to do a job that could take a plumber a few hours. It’s the same with sleep, let someone with experience help you, so much easier.

A client I worked with a while ago said she was doing EVERYTHING I had suggested but her baby was still waking every hour😩

Honestly she has been doing so well and so many things I suggested. White noise, blockouts, routine etc etc Most importantly she has a happy baby.

But her baby’s ears, hands and feet have been cold at night.

She googled it and apparently it’s fine.

Arghhh google boils my blood! Ha ha.

It’s not ok for sleep, babies just like us like to feel warm, they don’t like feeling cold and sleep so much better when they are cosy ☺️ I said this to the mumma and she said I have shower before bed because I don’t like having cold feet, exactly!

Mothers know best, our intuition is better than google 💪

I just heard from a client I visited 2 years ago. Her first daughter had been a TERRIBLE sleeper, one of the worst and it had been quite a an experience for her.

When I saw her, she was pregnant with baby number 2. I’ve not visited a baby pre birth, but this Mum wanted ensure she did not go through the same experience as she’d had with her first.

So during the visit we went through all things sleep, feeding, settling, bedding and routines etc. I remember showing her how to set up the bassinet for the best sleep.

And guess what this little baby has been an AMAZING sleeper, I remember the mum messaged asking I’m worried is she’s sleeping too much, ha ha!

Her baby is now two and still sleeping well. They say the key to success is preparation and that certainly worked in this case.

Some mothers feel like a failure getting a sleep specialist they think I should know what I’m doing. I should be able to do this myself. But the truth is babies don’t come with a manual and we learn from each other.

Hi, if you don’t know me my name is Sarah I’m a baby sleep specialist in Perth. My first daughter was a catnapper and early riser and struggled to fall asleep. by 4 months she was sleeping through and having good day sleeps. People asked me how I did it and that is how this business began.

do you have a question about how to help your baby sleep?

I visited a 4 year old boy a few weeks ago. He had been taking 2 hrs to fall sleep at night. It was hours of tantruming, screaming and yelling.

Parents were exhausted.

On the night of the visit I could see he was leading the parents, he was deciding what happens when.

I took the reigns and started leading bedtime, gave him count downs to shower, teeth and he wasn’t allowed to leave until these things were done.

He insisted on a bright night light which is no good for sleep, but I reassured him he could still see even with it off. Rubbed his back for reasurance.

Left the room,15 minutes of light protesting and he was asleep.

Parents gobsmacked.

What was the difference? Boundaries, good dinner and calm bedtime. They help little ones feel safe and secure so they can settle off to sleep easily.

Don’t let your little one decide what’s happening with bedtime, they can still make choices like what PJ’s what book but when it comes to the important bits like sleep and timing you decide.

Stay calm and you can avoid tantrums.

Jackson 3 years old, Bayswater.

Was so upset at bedtime, screaming he would go from 0-100 in seconds. Mum did not feel good seeing him like that.

Now mum says it’s Absolute fabulous! He goes into the cot and happy to be left!

No niggles no begging me to stay.

Amazing! 🤩

Bedding for the best sleep

MATTRESS PROTECTORS
These are often plastic backs can cause sweating and uneven body temperature. Bambi make one that is all cotton and you can buy them in Kmart too. Alternatively you can use a cotton towel.

ONESIES
Ideally for all sleeps. For a ultimate comfort, dress baby in all cotton and or bamboo. Two piece outfits can ride up and become uncomfortable.

SLEEPING BAGS
Amazing for keeping babies warm as they don’t fall off like blankets. Secondhand sleeping bags can lose their warmth.

SWADDLE
Babies may fight these but they are worth preserving with as they really do help babies sleep.

BLANKETS
Use cotton bamboo cellular blankets, the once’s with holes in them. Like the ones they use in hospital. Babies love the weight and feel secure being tucked in.

Dress them warmly, tuck them in and watch them sleep 😴

5 signs your baby is WAKING COLD

1. Cold hands, feet and face.

2. 5am wake ups

3. Will only resettle in your arms or your bed.

4. They sleep with their legs and hands tucked up under them.

5. They move a lot in their sleep (trying to warm themselves up)

A good guide is dress baby as you would dress yourself.– comfortably warm, not hot or cold.

Sometimes all we do is add bedding and baby starts sleeping really well.

FOOD AND DRINKS
that help toddlers sleep

BREAKFAST
Porridge or weetbix. If he doesn’t eat it, offer it again 30 minutes later if he still doesn’t eat it then he can wait till snack time to eat again.

SNACKS
Offer fruit to stop fussy eating. Pear keeps them regular.

LUNCH AND DINNER
One cup of food per meal.
Offer hearty meals like Shepard’s pie, mild chicken curry’s and beef casseroles for dinner. Annabel Karmel sells wholesome meals in the freezer section at coles, very handy for a quick easy meal.

AVOID
Processed packet food, ice cream and custard are high in sugar. They can cause hyperactivity and will give toddler too much energy for sleep.

DRINKS
Water is best. Milk can also cause hyperactivity in some kids banana before bed is a great sweet option.

Ellie, 18 months old, Lansdale.

Was feeding to sleep, on REFLUX treatment, waking EVERY 30 MINUTES at night 😭

During the support we put her down to settle, 4 minutes later baby girl was asleep. Mum said “four minutes, is that all it took?”

Now Ivy is settling with easily, sleeping well and ONLY waking ONCE at night. Hooray!!

CASE STUDY

Baby A 9 weeks old.

Was sleeping all day but waking throughout the night and every 30 minutes from 4.30am.

Mum was concerned about starting a sleep routine because she didn’t want to be tied down to the house. But I assured her she could go out and about.

All that was changed for this newborn..

1. Addex WARMTH as he was in a thin swaddle, 24 degree room.

2. Started a new ROUTINE keeping him awake in the day for short periods of time so he was tired enough to sleep at night.

Now he’s sleeping well in the day, happy in his awake time and sleeping a lot more at night.

SOLIDS

Are SOOOO beneficial when it comes to sleep. When baby eats well at a home visit, boom the magic happens with settling.

POUCHES
Look out for misleading advertising. Often full of veg and fruit, not ideal for sleep but fine on occasion.

BALANCED MEALS
Most babies love veggies, but alone will not help them sleep.

FOOD IS FOR FUN BEFORE THEY ARE ONE?
Some babies can sleep well with just milk but the majority require food too from 6 months.

Many babies eat easily from a spoon, finger foods often misses their mouths, spoon is best for filling their little bellies.

HIGH CHAIRS
Your little squishy gets tired sitting. Bouncers are wonderful when starting solids because they are so comfortable, baby can see mummy’s face, just how they like it!

LASTLY
Food refusal is real, no pressure, relax, enjoy the weaning experience.

You’ve got this!

Early rising

SETTLING
5am is too early for little ones to get up, it can play havoc on their development.

Treat it like a night wake and RESETTLE. The more sleep they get the nicer they are to be around 😆

WARMTH
5am is the coolest time of the day, so feel their little armies, chest and face. If they are cool to touch they are too cold to sleep.

FEEDING
Feeding them well in the day at set times, no pushing and pressure. Offering top ups within the hour of feeding and courses if they are on solids is a great way to ensure they are well fed.

ROUTINE
If your mini me wakes up crying they are likely to be overtired. If they wake up happy and ready to play at 5am they could be having too much day sleep.

FINALLY
It takes about 2 weeks of a consistent approach to form new habits, you are the parent and you decide what time they get up because when you’re all well rested you can live your best life.

Talking about Toddler sleep

DAY SLEEP
Toddlers usually sleep around 11am in the day but pushing their day sleep out helps them to avoid the pesky 5am wakes.

DINNERS
A good dinner will aid them to settle easily and sleep well. Aim for a cup of food including all food groups. There’s a misconception that meat at dinner causes sleep problems but it 100% help little ones sleep.

BATH AND BOOK
A great opportunity to have peaceful one on one time together and also queue sleep.

SNACK
Can be a cup of milk or piece of fruit for another opportunity to fill them up for great sleep.

NIGHT LIGHTS
Fear is learnt from what we see in books, on tv etc. Around 18 - 24 months children start to feel fear so it’s great to have a night light on. Having the door slightly ajar is good, as is a plug in dim light. Less is more.

DOONERS
When they go into a big bed I would still dress them in a sleeping bag. Ergo sell sleeping bags upto the size of 6. Dooners fall off and toddlers wake up cold, so if you use them, tuck them in.

BEDTIME EXCUSES
They are so cute and little but toddlers know every trick to get out of bed. So cover all bases before 7pm. Cuddles, book, teeth, toilet, sippy beside the bed or in the cot, and comforter. When they ask for things after bedtime, shush their requests, back rubs if needed.

LASTLY
It your toddler is not a great sleeper, don’t feel bad. There is NO perfect child so be proud of yourself because raising a tiny human is tough sometimes ❤️

Setting up the NURSERY for perfect sleep.....

DECOR
Some mothers feel guilty for not decorating the room but it’s actually ideal for sleep. The less to entertain them the better. Earth tones are wonderful, avoid bright colours, lights and hide toys if your are storing them in their room.

WHITE NOISE
The sound helps baby to relax and blocks out external noise that might wake them from their slumber. I do recommend playing it for the duration of sleep.

TEMPERATURE
20-24 degrees is great but if you don’t have aircon you can just adjust baby’s bedding.

BEDDING
A lot of mattress protectors are plastic back which can cause sweating and uneven body temp. I recommend Bambi 100% cotton or a cotton towel.

Most babies sleep well in a full onesie, 2.5 tog sleeping bag and a thin cotton cellular blanket/s. Sleeping bags are a MUST. Avoid fleece that won’t breath. If it’s over 28 you might need to go down to a 1 tog sleeping bag to avoid sweating. If baby is cool to touch they are too cold to sleep.

FEEDING CHAIR
A comfortable place to feed during night wakes in the nursery is great, moving rooms to feed can wake baby up and make it harder for them to resettle.

DARKNESS
Little mini’s sleep well in a super dark room, it’s not essential a baby can sleep in a light room but it does help bore them to sleep 😆

About Bottle feeding

Always feed until full for maximum sleep. If they don’t take a full feed pop them down for a 20 minute play then offer the rest.

WIND
One of the most common reasons for baby taking a small feed is wind. Every time baby fusses on the bottle take them off and wind them. Wind them after too. Just little pats during cuddles, tummy time, nappy changes etc, relax and build winding into your day.

BOTTLE TYPE
My favourite bottle to use is the Tommy Tippee closer to nature babies seem to like the teat.

AIR FLOW
A lot people don’t realise it but some bottles have an air vent to help the milk flow, position at the top when feeding.

Also screw the cap just enough to stop leaks, but if too tight the milk will be harder to suck out.
Hold the bottle up so baby is not taking in air with their milk.

FORMULA
When it comes to formula I suggest Bellamy’s organic babies like the taste and has good ingredients.

POSITION
Hold baby’s tummy against yours with their little arm under your armpit going around your body, head in crook of your arm with a stable hold.
If their body is facing up to the ceiling with their head turn into you they may get a sore neck.

TODDLERS
Save your money and let them get their nutritional needs met with food and water. One bottle in the evening is fine up until 2 years of age.

LASTLY
If you have any guilt about not being able to breastfeed let go of that. As mothers we are all doing our best but sometimes formula is the better option.

Breastfed or formula fed you are doing a great job mumma!

Erica says...Sarah helped us with our Master Four and Master One.

We were having to lie with Master 4 in his room till he went to sleep.

Master 1 was waking around 3am and not going down well after that.

We had a phone call with sarah - she listened and gave us fantastic advice.

She really knows what she is talking about.

We are so happy with the results and can’t believe we waited so long to talk to her.

Thanks so much Sarah. You are a gem.

When it comes to toddler SLEEP it’s important you have a good connection with your toddler and they understand BOUNDARIES

Here are my tips on having well behaved toddlers that sleep;

1. The better they feel the better they act. If you are constantly telling them off and criticising them they are not going to feel good. How do I know? Because I’ve been there. Thousands of parents feel this way right now. You are not alone.

2. So praise them, LOVE them, send time with them and they will be good to be around.

3. Stay CALM don’t let them upset you when they are having a meltdown, let them have their emotions. If you distract them or stop it they will continue to act out.

4. EMPATHISE with them. What they are doing “wrong” have you ever done that.

5. UNDERSTAND when they get upset because xyz happened, had that ever happened to you? How does that feel.

Save this post to go back on you next time you feel like your child is not behaving well.

I was just working with a mother with twins, she said her boy can be really fussy with food.

This is my advice for her...

✔️ Limit snacks in the afternoon to just a piece of fruit or 1/2 if he is still fussy at dinner time.

✔️ He likes to a home made biscuit, so give that to him after dinner. It will motivate him to eat.

✔️ Offer one meal and if he doesn’t want it, put it away and let him play.

✔️ Offer again about 1/2 an hour later.

He’s gaining weight and sleep quite well so I wouldn’t worry if he misses a dinner every now and again.

I have been working with Sarah since Mr 3 hit his 4 month sleep regression and was waking every 45 minutes 😳 after a week of that I knew I needed to do something, a friend recommended Sarah and she literally changed my life!! I've reached out to Sarah for advice along my parenting journey, to provide advice on things like sleep while teething, longer day naps, early rising, we don't do 5am in our household after 6:30am please, transitioning into big boy bed, eating, preparing for a brother and now a newborn. I wasn't after a strict routine with #2 just a touch of sleep, our first night home from hospital he didn't go down until 5:30am 😳 Sarah provided some excellent advice which helped us settle into a flexi routine that suits our family and with the advice I've gotten from her over the last 3 years Mr 10 weeks self settles within 2 minutes, wakes at 1-2am for a feed then again at 6:30am, I never expected only 1 wake, I would've been happy with 3 but all the small tweaks have worked it that way. I recommend Sarah to everyone who is struggling with the above and more, she is so reassuring, calm and subtle with her gentle approach, she honestly makes you feel like the best Mum and then her suggestions work so well I'm sure she's secretly a magician. My friends and I joke that Sarah went to Hogwarts and I'm sure she should win a Nobel Prize for baby sleep 🤣 I don't know where I'd be without having connected with Sarah 3 years ago, but I know I now get plenty of rest and so do my kids, supporting their immune systems, growth and development. Mr 3 and I talk about how important sleep is and he says it's going to make him big and strong 🥰 We have such a positive sleep association and it benefits our whole family. I cannot thank Sarah enough 💛
