World On Wheels Exciting motorcycle adventures in exotic international destinations! www.WorldOnWheels.tours Oldest in the game in Australia; for 30 years now!
(19)

World On Wheels leads motorcycle safaris to diverse destinations such as the Indian Himalaya, Nepal, Bhutan, Morocco, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Turkey, Peru-Chile-Bolivia, Mexico-Guatemala-Belize, South Africa and Iceland, all approximately three weeks in duration. Mike Ferris owns and operates World On Wheels, Australia's only professional tour company specialising solely

in international motorcycle adventures. They personally guide and support each and every tour, into the world's most remote and exotic locations. Mike pioneered the Himalayan Motorcycle Safari concept in 1994 with his first crossing of the world's greatest mountain range by an Australian group of riders. In 1995, by now a qualified travel agent, he took his first commercial safari to the Khardung La in Ladakh (India), at 5,602 metres the highest motorable road in the world. Our group size is typically 15 to 20 riders, with or without pillion partners. All tours are fully supported with a backup vehicle for your luggage, motorcycle mechanics to take care of your bike, a local tour es**rt who speaks the necessary language in the relevant country and of course Australia's original Roads Scholar (Mike) as your guide! This will be a bit different from my usual travel posts. I’ve never done a 'Gear Review' before.

But I’ve just completed three back-to-back international tours, and this HELD riding gear is without doubt the best motorcycle clothing I have ever worn, in over thirty years of professional riding around the world. Ol’ mate Boris Mihailovic put me on to the Australian distributor, a company called Made In Germany, and I went to check out their stock. Ray Mig made it very easy for me to switch my allegiance immediately.

Believe me, I’ve tried quite a few brands over these 30 years. From top-end, expensive labels promising the world but failing to deliver, to second-tier, cheaper names which deliver what might subsequently be expected.

I travel to many of the planet’s most exotic and challenging locations several times a year, so my gear gets a really good workout. From teeming monsoon rains in the sub-continent, to searing heat in the deserts of Morocco, to freezing cold conditions in Iceland and Norway. And just about everything else in between.

I need gear which keeps me warm when it’s cold. HELD has the usual (but better quality) multiple liner options to allow layering when the bitter north wind begins to blow.

I need gear which cools me when it’s hot. This has very functional vents to facilitate flow-through ventilation.

I need gear which looks stylish! Can’t have the tour leader looking sloppy in front of many groups of 15-20 people now, can we?

I need gear which is comfortable. I can ride a 10-hour day in this and still feel fresh when I eventually park up.

Most of all, I need gear which is waterproof. Not just a label which says '100% Waterproof' on something which then leaks like a colander after 15 minutes in a moderate rainfall. This HELD gear is actually 100% waterproof. The jacket, the pants, the gloves and even the boots, have kept me dry and as warm as toast.

HELD was recently voted Best Clothing Brand 2024 by the highly-acclaimed international Motorrad Magazine, and I fully endorse their decision.

Rating: 10 out of 10 from the Rushin' Judge. Get yourself some HELD gear, you won’t regret it.

They're ba-a-aack!! We were quick to share the surprising news last year of Compass Expeditions closing their doors -- some folk thought we even jumped the gun a bit. So it's only fitting now that we share today's news that Compass are back. And rightly so; it's a business too good to let die. We wish Mick and Jerry and their two new business partners Brent and Ben all the best. And nice to know Veronica and Craig will be retained in the lineup.

"It’s now with the greatest of pleasure that we can announce that, like the legendary Phoenix, Compass Expeditions has arisen from the ashes and will once again offer world renowned, unique, exciting motorcycle tours across the globe." Mick McDonald.

Well, 2020 continues to be a year of surprises and new challenges. But in the expectation that travel restrictions will eventually be lifted and the world can reset to a somewhat new normal, we've been working on our international motorcycle touring calendar for 2021.

Congratulations to Captain Sharelle Quinn, who was selected for the honour of flying the last 747 from the Qantas fleet on its final flight today. As well as being the first female Captain of The Flying Kangaroo, Sharelle is a keen motorcyclist and a friend of World On Wheels, having done three tours with us recently.

Well, ... the 4th of May. Today is the day 16 of us are supposed to fly into southern Spain, to pick up motorcycles and ride to Morocco tomorrow. For obvious reasons, it ain't happening, so I shall have to amuse myself (and possibly others) by looking back on this journey from recent years.

We're getting quite a few people asking us if we have any clients stranded overseas during this pandemic Covid crisis. We can assure everyone that World On Wheels has no-one stuck overseas looking for a way to get home.

We were halfway through our Yaks 'n' Yetis tour of Nepal / India / Bhutan when we became aware of impending border closures and government restrictions. We took the difficult decision to terminate the tour early and fly out while we still could, and everyone made it back home in a timely manner.

We did have a group of 16 heading to Morocco at the end of this month, but this obviously has had to be cancelled. Or rather, postponed for an indefinite period of time.

Stay safe out there peeps, the world is a dangerous place right now. We can only hunker down and see out the storm, whilst we hope and prepare for brighter skies ahead.

Many think Covid-19 is some kind of alien invasion that spells the end of the world. But the real threat to us is a much deadlier virus: a hatred of all the values that have underpinned our civilisation for centuries.

Our Story

World On Wheels is an Australian company offering motorcycle tours to diverse destinations including the Indian Himalaya, Nepal, Bhutan, Morocco, the Dalmatian coastline, Turkey, Peru-Chile-Bolivia, Mexico-Guatemala-Belize, South Africa, the Baltic States and Iceland, all approximately three weeks in duration.

Oldest in the game in Australia; for 25 years now! One of the original international pioneers. World On Wheels is Australia's only professional tour company specialising solely in international motorcycle adventures. Mike Ferris pioneered the Himalayan Motorcycle Safari concept in 1994 with his first Royal Enfield crossing of the world's greatest mountain range by an Australian group of riders. This subsequently inspired many other operators to follow suit; several of our ‘competitors’ are in fact past clients of WOW ! Our group size is typically 15 to 20 riders, with or without pillion partners. All tours are fully supported with a backup vehicle for your luggage, motorcycle mechanics to take care of your bike, a local tour es**rt who speaks the necessary language in the relevant country, as well as an Australian tour leader.
