We saw the upsetting sight of what appeared to be a Humpback whale calf with its tail entangled in shark nets between Rose Bay and Watsons Bay on our charter this afternoon.

The maritime were enforcing a 100 mtr exclusion zone and two inflatables with mammal rescue were working hard under difficult circumstances to free the whale.

There surely has to be a better answer to shark nets ?

As we continued our charter it would appear the whale left the harbour but still entangled with the net and several large bright orange floats.

No photos as there was a TV news camera covering the entire recovery event.

So what do the Too Up crew do when they are not on board?

Jane is a busy manager of a pre-school early learning centre and multi award winning competitive sailor.

Lindsay works as a part time Dr’s receptionist and full time dish-washer at home (apparently).

Craig works in ‘IT’ during office hours but on his down time is a valued crew member.

Christina works in Marine sales and would love to show prospective buyers around a range of luxury boats Australian Marine Sales

Captain James provides his services to a number of other charter boat operators and is busy providing whale watching cruises at the moment

Catriona is touring Europe (lucky for some).

Skipper Dave (yours truly) provides boat license courses and one to one boat handling training for boatwisesydney and sail training for TooUp Sailing and also works as a casual Skipper and Tour bus operator for sydneyluxurycruise and sydneyluxurytours

An unpromising start meant lots of texts and calls with our client this morning but I was convinced the rain would pass.

We always like to accommodate our clients requests and want them to have the best time so we pushed out our start time out to 1.00 pm and the forecasters were correct 🌞☀️🕶️!

What a beautiful afternoon for a family birthday celebration.

This is a serious subject but we thought we would share this important post from

It Is World drowning prevention day on 25th July and anything we can do to prevent such tragedies is really important.

As a retired UK Marine Police Officer I attended far to many incidents were deaths could have been prevented if a life jacket had been worn.

This is why any child under 12 who is a guest on board Too Up wears a lifejacket the entire time they are aboard and any none swimmers or guests who don’t feel confident in the water have a life jacket available to use.

Don’t take the sea, harbour and rivers lightly and always be prepared.

We had a wonderful 80th birthday cruise on board late this afternoon.

Our repeat clients joined together to celebrate a life well lived and it was a pleasure to listen to the speeches and anecdotes from a lovely extended family.

We sheltered out of the wind in Taylor’s Bay and served delicious catering from
Bern the Chef.

Another great afternoon on the water as an instructor/mentor for boatwisesydney
Today we covered anchoring, picking up a mooring buoy, navigation using the vessels fixed electronic navigation systems, pilotage and buoyage on our passage along the Lane Cove River.
Our session was planned so it moved into the hours of darkness so our client also experienced 1st hand the difference between day and night navigation.

Today I was working for boatwisesydney as an instructor for a private client on his new purchase, a lovely Bayliner.

He has booked 3 five hour sessions to include lots of boat handling and a night navigation session.

As a ‘stepping stone’ to improve your skills and iron out any concerns you may have I recommend these courses.

You can do them on your boat or Boatwise own vessel.

“Why post an image of the recycling bins Birkenhead Point Marina” I hear you ask.

Well it is just a reminder that Too Up is focussed on our eco credentials so we recycle as much of the waste as possible that is generated on our charters. The bins positioned at the end of most marina berthing arms make life easy for us.

We only use recycled 2 ply toilet paper and biodegradable bin bags in our toilet bins (heads) and store all other waste in 20 ltr plastic buckets for ease of disposal and thereby not having to use black bin liners.

We only provide China or wooden plates and platters and stainless steel cutlery, avoiding single use plastic or paper plates

One of my crew members even takes any empty beer bottles to the return & earn depository.

Our crew uniforms are even washed in natural plant based detergent!

We just see it as our way of doing our bit to preserve our environment.

With the school holidays approaching you may be looking for something to do as a family?

I work alongside Boat Wise as one of their acredited trainers and they have just announced a 20% discount on all boat licence courses throughout the month of July.

Boatwise are an authorised marine training centre with their own training rigid inflatable (rib) berthed at Gladesville Bridge Marina.

Their practical course will provide lots of time behind the wheel on the water, learning from an experienced instructor.

You will receive support via an on-line pre-read theory section and then during the practical session your instructor will answer any questions and develop your boat handling skills.

One of the first clients that I provided a Sail training acquaint overnight course to has gone from strength to strength.

Not only purchasing then selling their own catamaran (they wanted something different to fit their requirements).

But also gaining work in the Australian Marine Sales side of things so they get to see new design trends and models before they hit the high seas.

Having accomplished so much I have just been advised that ‘Mark’ has achieved his RYA Ocean Yachtmaster qualification!

WOW now that is some going having been a complete novice only a few years ago.

Congratulations Mark and Taryn, you are a couple who chase their dreams and succeed because of a hard work ethic which I admire
