What a beautiful Day

Great day out at Botlierskop Game Farm in the bush outside Mossel Bay. Most of these animals have been rescued and relocated here to live on a 12,000 acre reserve. There's a big focus on general conservation for multiple species.

We had the privilege of going out with the vet to treat one of the male elephants with his regular medication. They darted him from a helicopter and once he was down we all gathered round. Phones not allowed in case it spooked the bull but the lady riding on the Jeep will email us her shots!

It was very hot so they kept pouring water on his skin to keep his temperature under control.

Quite special to be up close with white rhino and a cheetah basking in the shade.

So today I learnt more about abalone than I ever knew previously. A precious and highly prized commodity and that they attract more poachers in Africa than rhinos!

They start as micro spawn in the sea water and it takes two years to raise them to about 6cms in diameter. The farm has to pump 100,000 litres of oxygenated sea water to the growing stock every hour 24/7 to keep them live. Amazing infrastructure!

So valuable we all had to sanitise and put on cleaned gum boots before accessing the growing stock in tanks.

I also had my first taste three ways; sashimi with black caviar, marinated ceviche style and dressing of Asian soy ginger. Not sure it will be replacing my Pacific oysters but a great morning out in Hermanus.

Very special night out! A Harvest Feast cocktail party and dinner showcasing the best of South African Autumn produce plus local wines and artisan gin bar. Table Mountain was so close you felt you could reach out and touch it.

Great entertainment from an African youth choir and all on the front lawn of the official residence of the state Premier of the Western Cape. The Americans couldn't believe the mansion pre-dates the White House!

On an expedition ship there's a big focus on sustainability and preserving the world's oceans.

So your in-room fridge has water carafes that are refilled every day and we are issued metal refillable drink bottles to take off ship.

But our tour bus today also had these cartons of water supplied. Genius! So much easier to recycle than plastic.

South Africa has impressed me with quite a few "green" initiatives.

How much would you expect to pay for 6 oysters and a glass of sparkling wine in a Sydney waterfront pub? $45?

In Capetown it's AUD$12. Seriously!

There's something very Zen about an underwater world.

I highly recommend this place as a nice getaway from the busy waterfront precinct. All sorts of sea life exhibits and educational installations. And waaaay cheaper entry costs than we charge at home!

Off to South Africa to finally take our 2020 cancelled trip. Cause for celebration I think!

I've sent plenty of clients off on Singapore Airlines so great to experience their Business Class product again. Plenty of space and comfort on their A380 seating.

Roasted lamb loin sounds nice for dinner followed by a good movie.

Well, you can't control the weather in the Tasman at any time of year.

But very nice to enjoy nice food and great entertainment on a cruise ship nonetheless.

Happy 2024, and it's off with a bang. After my last post it appears clients spent the festive season looking at "where to next"? This week has brought new enquiries for Vietnam, Japan, Hawaii and Africa. Best I get back to work...

So as we wind down for 2023 it feels like that pesky pandemic memory is finally fading. This was the year of revenge travel; clients took off for new experiences from Antarctica to the Maldives or Croatia. Others reconnected with favourite places from Fiji to Paris.
When Africa was fully booked you were prepared to try Egypt instead. I thank all of you for your support this year and here's to more happy travels in 2024

It's a steamy 30C up on deck...that pool looks very inviting! Nice views of the Sydney skyline from up here.

Crystal have reduced the passenger maximum to 606 guests even though the ship was built for 900. No fighting for a sunlounge here!

Casual lunch time venue and tapas in the evening.

I stand corrected on the fine dining.
One complimentary dinner per cruise at the Italian and Japanese. But extra sessions are $50usd per person. The menus are top notch.

Here today for a ship inspection on the lovely Crystal Symphony at White Bay. Glad to have made it on time after disastrous signage on the new Rozelle Interchange freeway!

This is peak period for international cruise visitors so berths are in short supply at this "glamorous" terminal. Still, an army of staff operate cleaning, shuttles and a high service standard.

So we all had dinner at different venues. I was at Pink Agave, the Mexican restaurant. Food and Margaritas were pretty nice.
