Shirakawago is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unique architectural style known as Gassho-Zukuri.

The roofs of these 250-year-old farmhouses are tilted at a very steep angle, designed to shed heavy snowfall, which is common in the area. ❄️
The term 'gassho' means 'praying hands' style. The triangular shape of the steep, slanted roofs resembles two hands pressed together in prayer.
