Who remembers??

I asked our eldest son over for dinner tonight because we are having a lamb roast.

He turned us down because he’s “got a date”.

How rude!! 😂

A 79-year-old woman has achieved her goal of traveling to every country in the world.

Luisa Yu said ever since she was a young girl in the Philippines, she has "always" dreamed of traveling.

Yu said she came to the U.S. as an exchange student when she was 23 and began to travel when she could.

"I started in the U.S. first because of my status ... I couldn't go out of the country," Yu explained. "So I decided to take a Greyhound bus and tour the United States."

From there, she kept going.

OMG - Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady is AMAZING!!

Been on her now for 8 days as we are sailing from Singapore to Sydney!!

Some have asked where are my photos? I’m going to start posting today. We’ve had 8 days on board and I’ve been busting for today!! I thought I’d give it time for me to make up my mind - well I’m convinced!!

I do not have the words to describe the food, the staff and the entertainment is out of this world!! The relaxed clothing and no formal nights, (except maybe Scarlet night), no photographers, no crazy sales in the promenade, just purely a cruise which has a discovered a great formula on how to cruise. (Sorry kids, unless 18 you are not allowed). This is for open-minded adults who embrace a cruise line, who accepts everyone is different and the occasional F-bomb from the performers is not an issue.

This cruise line is not for everyone. To my other travel agent friends, screen your clients.

Hubby and I are travelling with mates from their early 50’s to 70’s and we are loving it.

No drink packages here. You buy what is known as Bar Loot!! If you are drinking with a group there is nothing stopping you putting this “shout” onto your own bill. No fussing about I need your sea pass card and mine. No, you can only get two drinks for two different persons at a time. No, you’re at your limit for the day and you can resume using your drinks package tomorrow. Also all the soft drinks, water, drip filter coffee and non specialty teas and even some fruit juices are INCLUDED!! (This does not need to come off your bar loot!!). Don’t forget, everyone, (even the staff), gets access to free internet!

The meals have been sensational. With 22 restaurants to choose from we are glad we’ve chosen to come on an extended journey of 16days!! We are working our way through the many different food offerings and service has been exceptional and always friendly & easy. The Galley (Virgin’s version of a buffet) is fantastic!! From fresh salads at the daily Mix, to Tacos, Ramen, Toasties, diners, burgers, bento boxes or even a take away Charcuterie box to go! It’s soooo good.

One thing I have noticed, people are polite with the lifts and no jumping in the lifts with every floor button pushed as some random child has thought it funny to do so. No running past your cabins screaming or playing chasing. (I know not all kids do this but that’s what we can experience on some sailings I’ve previously sailed on). The departure lines are equally as pleasant and not noisy nor frazzled Mums and Dads as they try to make their way through the departure screening etc. It’s been soooo easy!!

We were originally in a Central Sea terrace but successfully bidded on Suite upgrade and scored a Seriously Suite.

Here you get, besides your OARsome Rockstar Agent (like a concierge for all your extra needs), 5 x 375ml spirits of either Gin, Tequila, Vodka, scotch Whisky and Bacardi Rum. PLUS you get 4 x 375ml bottles of moet, Rose, White and Red wine. A couple of cans of red bull, plus the sugar free ones, & couple of cans of beer all included in the suite. Not to mention your own record player, extra wardrobe space and massive bathroom. Your room water is replenished daily (we have both a still and a sparkling) plus because all the soft drinks are included (except for specialty Eg tonic water with elderflower which has a cost), you can have a drink in your cabin or take on to go!! Oh and don’t forget free flowing Moet each evening from 5-6pm at an exclusive area on Deck 16 called Richard’s Rooftop Bar).

Buying a bottle of wine at the restaurant and not finishing it? You can take it with you to the next bar or to your cabin!! (You can bring 2 x 750ml bottles on boarding day, with you for wine or sparkling - not spirits! But there is a corkage fee so best to leave these in your fridge in your cabin).

We are taking our two adult sons with us 23 Dec 23 for Xmas this year ex Melbourne and can’t wait to introduce them to “adult”
Cruising and getting their opinions on what they think. (Which shall share with you).

Yes I’m on board now but if you’d like to join us to experience Virgin Voyages for Xmas this year and see what all the hype is about, please click on this link. I’d love you to join us and by booking with me, you will receive a bonus $100 bonus Bar loot for your cabin on top of the $300 promotion for this cruise currently. (If you have a higher loyalty status Eg Gold or above for virgin Airlines,
Diamond for Royal Caribbean,
Elite for Princess as examples let me know because you may be entitled to even further included extras $100 Bar loot (up to $200 per cabin), a free laundry bag, $10 brewed coffee per day, everyone gets internet but with this offer it is a Premium speed.

We did Xmas onboard a ship last year and it was the easiest Xmas day meal ever. No fighting for fridge space, no shopping for excess food stuffs which may perish before eaten, our Xmas gifts were sorted! No arguments whether the beer or the dessert has priority in the fridge, no cleaning before, washing up after, it’s okay for everyone to go and have a nap with their belly’s full 😜

Click on the link if you’d like to join us and get the free $100 extra spending on board (you won’t get this booking direct), plus joining means you qualify for a free bottle of bubbles. Or simply message me and let’s get you on board to one of the most amazing Xmas’ you will ever experience. 23 Dec 23 - Resilient lady ex Melbourne to Burnie and Hobart (overnight). (Of course you can book ANY sailing you like also by using the link below).

Book with an Agent who loves to cruise as it makes a HUGE difference to where your cabin placement is etc. It’s a fine art to getting this right.

SEA you onboard!!

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Day 6 and 7

Day 6

We took the train from Nuremberg with our Eurail Train pass to Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber today and we had 3 train changes to get to our destination.

Leaving at 7:30am from Nuremberg, we’d be at our destination by 10am.

The name is long and is broken down as follows (we were told).
Rothen = Red
Burg = Castle
Ob Der = Above
Tauber = Dark (shadowed) River (as it runs through the forests and is heavily tree lined).

Thus, the Red Castle Above the Dark River!!

We arrived into our last train station and the weather had gone from sunshine and 20° Celsius to only 13° and drizzling rain. But there was no wind so it was just more annoying and still very pleasant.

Upon arrival here at ROTD train station you need to be mindful. The stop before Rothenburg is Steinbach and it has no elevators so you have to carry your bags down a set of stairs and then up the other set. There are no train station attendants and those in wheel chairs or with poor mobility may need to consider getting off at an earlier or later station and catching a taxi. It was not an easy task when you have international size cases. Lucky for me I had our son & a very kind gentleman who assisted us.

We decided to walk the mainly flat route to our accommodations which was fine whilst out of the walled city. Once inside the city walls we were dealing with pavers and uneven surfaces. We had a small hill to tackle and no side footpaths which would be normally smooth.

It would be a much easier task to arrive by taxi and when we leave in two days time, that is exactly what we are doing!!

Early check in was available and we set off to the local tourist information centre to see what we can discover!! I had been here previously with hubby for a one day “snap look” with hubby in Sept 2019 whilst on a Scenic River Cruise, (which was sensational). Today we had no guide and I wanted to explore all I had missed last time but also share all the great places and reminisce with our son.

We were given a town map and told there was an English speaking tour at 2pm in the main Market Square plus another called the Nights Watch tour at 8pm. Both tours were €9 per person.

We decided to do the day time one today which would give us some great insight into what the City history was all about.

But as it was still 3hrs away we went off to explore and find lunch.

Being a Medieval Town we went to a shop full of armour, swords and so many great and interesting items. You could get lost in this shop for hours. It even has a downstairs dungeon where you can get your photo taken with a could of armoured gentlemen sitting at a table!! William loved this shop as much as his Dad and I did the last time we were here.

We then walked towards the iconic Bavarian photo place, then off to find lunch. William, just like Dad made a B-line for a shop with sausages everywhere!! There was a curried sausage cup with a bread roll for a very reasonable €4.50 and being a cooler day it was a great hearty lunch indeed. We continued in walking through the Christmas shops(I think there are seven or at least pre Covid and I believe the same remains. (Yes, it is one of those quintessential places to buy a Christmas decoration(s) and yes they ship them home for you.

It was time for the tour! Something we noticed was as we had previously strolled past the buildings before the tour, you never realise certain things until they are pointed out for you!! There were only four people on the tour so it was very informative but also personalised. That’s where the Scenic River Cruise had a distinct advantage over us doing a self-guided rail itinerary. Here we had to find a tour and little guidance. Plus with Scenic River Cruises it was included.

We found a great place to eat, but this time shared a pork hock and chips. (The lunchtime curried sausages had us not very hungry at all).

One thing to note here in Germany, you have to buy water. They do not give you tap water even when you ask. They say the water is safe to drink but why would you when you can buy it? (I don’t think they understand the concept of environmental impact each bottle has. 😢

We then came back. Charged our phones and then went out just before 9pm to get some evening photos of the city. (Well worth it I thought as I also grabbed a couple of beautiful chocolates to eat for dessert whilst walked around).

It was very safe and not many people around. A lot of the shops, although closed had their window displays lite up.

Today had been a GREAT DAY!!

DAY 7

Today we woke up to blue skies and a little chillier 11° morning.

We got up and headed out to walk some of the walls walkways. Amazing to see and quite an architectural feat indeed. They don’t make things these days like this!! Obviously built for purpose but also built to last!!

Williams request was for the same lunch and I was naughty and had a local deep friend short crust pastry snowball. This is otherwise known as a Schneeball or Schneeballen. Nomnomnom 😝

Checking out tonight’s dining options we simply strolled the streets and we’re in awe at the beauty around every corner we were looking at.

We knew we had tonight’s tour with the Night Watchman at 8pm so went out and did some last minute grabs and dinner.

William wanted the same as the day before. He is a creature of habit and if he likes it, this is what he does!! So pork knuckle and fries it was, (again). I just had a little as all the food, and extremely LARGE serving sizes.

Tonight’s Night Watchman tour was even better than yesterdays. George was a great at his craft. His outfit and delivery of lines/script were so funny. He was very animated in his facial expressions and everyone loved it. Compared to the day before and only having four people, tonight was close to 50 people!!

We walked the same trail as yesterday but the story was sooo different tonight. It was not repetitive etc which you’d probably expect. Tonight’s tour was more about the living conditions and tales of townsfolk. Just brilliant!!

So tonight we came back and packed our bags ready for an 8:30am taxi as we set of for 2nts in Munich.

Our 2nts and full days here in RODT has been awesome and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Definitely worth a stop over and making it two nights to explore more deeply this Bavarian City, rather than one, was the best decision ever.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber we love you!! 🫶

Day 3, 4 and 5 in Nuremberg, Germany

Day 3

Today we would started using our Eurail, Germany Flexi-pass. Instead of using it just on a trip, we did it as a Day Trip.

We departed the Ibis (pronounced ii-bus) and arrived at Frankfurt HBF train station with a good 30mins to spare. Allowed us time to sort out our bearings because this place, like most European Train stations are HUGE. Yes, Sydney Central station HUGE.

We found our platform after asking for confirmation from a uniformed person which platform we needed to be on. (Also where the carriage for First Class would be).

There was an announcement over the loud speaker and I hear the word Nuremberg said a few times. We spoke to another lady who spoke English and German if they were saying, “is the train for Nuremberg arriving”. She said “yes”.

We got both our larger suitcases in and discovered there was barely anyone in the carriage. (I thought this is a little odd as I thought Nuremberg would have a few more passengers).

Suddenly my heart sank as I looked at the tv screen and could not see the word, or anything like the word Nuremberg.

I said to William “hurry. Our train was delayed and they snuck this one in between. We need to get off!!”

We scrambled to grab our two suitcases and the smaller carry on to have the doors close and we were now on a train to Koblenz and who knows where else!?!?

Just all part of the adventure really and something to laugh at! (I think).😂🚂🙅‍♀️

I found a man who spoke English and could tell me the next stop was Frankfurt Airport. Phewww, as I knew this was only a 12-13min ride from where we had started. 🚂 ➡️ ✈️ ❌

Next thing the Conductor came through and in the end we would only be 40mins later than our original intended arrival. Getting back on track here isn’t hard. The trains are so frequent and efficient.

The airport announcements are in German AND English so we knew this time we were on the correct train, (thank goodness) 👏 👏👏. This was an ICE train and has free wifi - regional trains do not have Wi-fi. (Pronounced wii-fee over here).

We arrived and made our way to the underground access to the northern side of the city in Nuremberg called Altstadt.

It was beautiful and walled and ramparts and ours to explore for 3days. 👏🫶

For the first day we dropped our bags at the Ibis Altstadt hotel (it was too early to check in) and went back to the train station to jump on a train to Bamberg (just over 40min train trip). Making the best of our $ worth, we could use the same day ticket we had come down from Frankfurt to Nuremberg on (and do a return trip in time for dinner).

Bamberg is another Medieval City and has this famous smoked beer which hubby loves and I loathe. But hubby isn’t here so I had a Radler, (like a shandy), and William had a water. (They don’t have tap water here and a 250ml bottle of water is close to $6AUD. That’s still water, not sparkling 😬).

We came back after spending a couple of hours in Bamberg and we looked for dinner WITH VEGGIES 🥕 🥦 🫘 But alas, we found a small pub and it had pork steaks with potato salad (William) and I took the pork shoulder roast with potato dumpling (which I saw on someone’s plate thinking it was potato mash - WRONG. It tasted like a small amount of potato, held together with old bread. The jus gravy was nice but didn’t mask the poor tasting dumpling. The potato salad was presented and William and I both thought it was like sliced apple!! 🥔 🍞 🤮

No sauerkraut this time, but nonetheless a less Learnt.

Whilst here we also whilst chatting to some people from Prague (OMG, don’t we all love Prague to those who’ve visited there before!!) They let us know if a festival here for just two nights but the tickets were sold out. It was becoming a lot more popular. It is called Blue Nicht (Blue Night) and is a lot like when in Sydney they do Vivid and project images onto old buildings etc. Something Doddsy and I can work around doing next time we are back here!!!

Day 2
Today we pre purchased a Nuremberg Card ticket. $33EURO pp but covers all public transport in the CBD area plus entry to many of the museums around here.

Today we went to Zeppelinfeld and also the Commerce Building where we learnt about a history of days gone by where we should learn from, but often want to forget. 💔

We found a grocery store and grabbed some fresh fruit and veggies as William is concerned we may Catch “scurvy”!! 😳😩

Plus on the way out of the grocery store there was a Subway. Best darn Subway I’ve eaten in a long time and salad items!!

Day 3

Today whilst on our travels I gave William instructions to start out looking through the town for what we might get for dinner. (Let’s hopefully find some veggies 😂)

So we set off for the Burg as the maps and locals call it. It is otherwise known as the Nuremberg Imperial Castle. It sits high on the hill overlooking the City of Nuremberg below.

“A Germanic word for hill fort was burg. Eventually through much of Europe, including Old English, it came to mean walled city or fortified city, like Hamburg, Germany. They were safe places to reside. But berg spelled with an e came to mean hill or mountain”. So all the cities and places you’ve heard about with a Burg/Berg Eg Heidelberg, Hamburg and yes Nuremberg. Interestingly enough, the article below also states, “In South Africa, speakers of Afrikaans, a Dutch offshoot language, call mountains bergs. And we English speakers call a floating hill of ice an iceberg.”

Read more at: https://www.albertleatribune.com/2013/10/how-to-figure-out-what-town-names-mean/ #

We walked down through the main part of Old Town (Altstadt) and where the largest Christmas Markets for Germany are each year.

Showed William Schroner Bruner Fountain, (Near the Town Hall) & The Nuremberg Ring now welded within an iron fence. Legend is said, it will bring good luck to those that touch it. Other legends say you must turn it and it will bring you money, love and the unknown. 💰 🫶 ???

We arrived at the Castle and there are three different areas you can visit (with a few for each) BUT our Nuremberg Pass got us in at no cost.

Suddenly we realised we had ambled for hours. Exploring, reading, walking towers, amused by the different items and WOWED by the stunning views!! Nuremberg is sooo pretty. Red roofs and tall cathedral and churches popping out of the skyline. Just beautiful.

As part of the exploring we went to the BurgGartens (Castle Gardens) which were well manicured and the flowers were in bloom. The rose garden however was full of buds and won’t be long before they come out too!!

Eventually the gardens lead us to now be walking on the Walls of the City. This place was enormous and when hubby and I last came we did not spend the time needed to do it justice. Definitely worth taking the time and missing out on a second museum today.

Walking under another rampart, we walked down the hill(berg) towards the Main square again where the fountain was.

Decided to eat Italian which overlooked this Platz (plaza). No veggies but a welcome change from our current usual cuisine 😂 🍝 😋 🚗 📸

Tomorrow we use another of our day passes to catch the train to Rothenburg on der Taubr (another Burg!!). This has one of the three only remaining fully intact walls surrounding the City and you can walk the whole way around (or so I’ve been told). When at the museum of Natural history the other day, a worker there advised the reason the wall there is round is from many years ago a meteor had hit earth and created the crater on impact!! How fascinating. I have been here before but never knew this.

On a side note: We used 3 museums (one included the castle and we spent hours there, thus we didn’t get a second one in today. (We used $28€ in museums alone plus transfers on the tram and trains. It was well worth it!!).

Thanks for those who read to the end and didn’t fall asleep!! 😴 😂 I don’t think the wifi is as good in Rothenburg but will post again when I can of our adventures.

DAY 1 and 2 Frankfurt, Germany.

Apologies for the delay. Wow the jet lag going from exactly 12hrs time zone difference (HAwaii time) AND then over 26hrs travel between leaving the ship to arriving into our hotel (Germany time), had me/us a bit ga-ga 😂

Flights were wonderful with scoring a seat inbetween twice in one day!! Yer-haaaa!!

Then whilst on the second flight there was some shouting from behind heard during the flight and an odd “request” for when we landed in Frankfurt.

We were advised once at the terminal we were to remain seated and do NOT get out of our seats. A few did, (we could not believe how many people on the flight despite turbulence and being asked to “go back to your seats”, the ignorant passengers kept getting up. They’d go to the overhead lockers (so dangerous), toilets, just ‘do stretches/laps’. So unbelievable!!

Anyhow “nek minute” the police come on board and go behind us. There is abother verbal confrontation with the police and a man escorted from the plane. A bottle of tequila was taken as evidence and was well consumed at this point from a duty free purchase. Funnily enough, there was also banana lollies which had been soaked in the tequila and was used as a method to consume!! Gosh people are smart!! 👮‍♀️🍌🍸

Then we were off to the luggage carousel to collect our new July bags. So nice to have bags which ’work’ and are easy to roll and nice handles etc. upon collecting my trunk, the pull up handle no longer functioned correctly and the airline had also managed to loose a number from the turn combination🤦🏼‍♀️

Thus, off we go to report to the Airline. She then sent us off to the baggage repair place at the airport to see if they could fix it. “No, expertise”. But they were willing to sell me another trunk (not replace) for $899 Euro. (Not likely!!) 💼 🙅‍♀️ (We love the bags and will just have to wait till we get back to Oz).

Then off to the train to catch it into Frankfurt. After pressing English on the machine for the first page, everything there after was in German again!?!? 🤣🤯 🚂
(We have a Germany Train pass but purchased 7 day trips and we are here for 10days so wanted to conserve one of the day passes).

Anyhow, we arrived to Frankfurt station and William was AMAZED. (Think mouth and eyes wide opened as a kid in a candy shop). He could not believe the size of this train station. Those of you who’ve been to Europe, and Frankfurt will know what I am talking about!! I was like it the first time and now it’s ‘normal’ to me.

After a few photos, we walked to our hotel, dropped off the bags and head to Altstadt Frankfurt (Old Town). I made William push on. We were not to sleep till later. (He made it to 7.30pm in the end!!) 🏨 😴

Here William was in his element. The buildings looked like he was expecting. The sun was out and everyone was oddly FACING the sun. (In Oz when the sun is in our eyes, the majority of us would put our back to the sun. Not here).

We walked to the Cathedral and went inside. William kept saying “WOW”. (He was around six when last in Germany and now he is looking at it through adult eyes). So different. 👀⛪️ ✅

We went out to the restaurant Doddsy and I go to each time in Frankfurt and found our waiter Bill, The Greek whose living in Frankfurt!! I showed Bill a photo from last time and he could not believe it. William
Started to question where all the vegetables were/are on the menu. Bill told him, “yes there are vegetables. Sauerkraut and photos are vegetables.” William ate a bratwurst sausage and fries and I settled for soup. 🇬🇷🍽️ 🌭 🍟 🍲 🍻

We caught the tram back to the hotel and William was asleep in 5mins. Way too funny!! 😴 💤

DAY 2 Frankfurt

Walked along the river today towards Altstadt MeinPlatz again. 🚶‍♀️ 📸

We crossed the “Iron Bridge” and it was covered in locks and I found this unique one with a large Lions main. It was heavy!! 🦁 🌉

Then walked up to another bridge and back onto our original side. Enroute we went to an art exhibition which was a gallery in the middle of the bridge!! 🌉 🖼️

We jumped on a team and just ‘went’. We had purchased an all day ticket and went out to see the suburbs and came back. It was nice just to sit and look at the surrounding suburbs of Frankfurt. 🚋 🏡

Then off to explore shops including a cuckoo clock store as we headed towards Doddsy and my favourite sandwich shop. 🕰️ 🦅 🥪

We were tired and thankful we had pushed on the first day to see the cathedral etc as today was not as rushed.

We cthe tram back to the hotel, planned our next train trip which was to Nuremberg for three nights. (That’ll be another post). 🚂
