😎 Visit the world’s first oil tanker museum
Did you know that the world's first oil tanker was put into operation in Baku in 1879? Another interesting fact: many years later, the world's first oil tanker museum is anchored by the Baku Boulevard on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
The Surakhani ship, home to the world's first tanker museum, was long used to transport oil across the Caspian Sea. And from the moment you step aboard the ship, which opened its doors as a museum in 2021, you’ll feel like you’re on a bridge between history and modernity, thanks to the museum’s innovative use of technology. Browsing the various exhibition halls, you can read, watch and listen to fascinating information on the history of global shipping, the history of the Caspian Sea and the oil history of Baku.
One of the most interesting areas is the cabins and living rooms formerly used by the Surakhani crew where everything has been left as it was in the 1960s. You’ll be fascinated to see household appliances and belongings used in the oil tanker decades ago, to visit the captain's bridge, one of the most important spots for navigation, and observe the original appearance of the navigation, engine and radio rooms. And after the tour, you can continue your journey by enjoying superb seafood and national dishes in the onsite restaurant, which boasts an enchanting interior.
