21st February is a very special day in Bangladesh as it is observed as the "International Mother Language Day". On this day in 1952, a group of students protested against the imposition of Urdu as the only state language of Pakistan. The protest turned violent and several students were killed. This incident is now known as the Language Movement and is considered a defining moment in the struggle for Bengali national identity and independence.

To honor the Language Movement, the Bangladeshi government declared 21st February as "International Mother Language Day" in 1999. It is now celebrated worldwide as a day to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, and to remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives to protect the Bangla language. On this day, people in Bangladesh pay homage to the martyrs by placing flowers at the Shaheed Minar, the monument built in memory of the Language Movement, and participate in various cultural events and programs to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the Bengali language and culture.

This fort was built next to the buriganga River. Today the river has withdrawn and the Fort is surrounded by houses and markets. The builders of this fort brought Islam to Bangladesh.
