The Classic Routes
A well spent week in Bangladesh can be enough to give you an overview of the country’s scenery and culture. To really get the most act of your time, though, you’ll need to put in some thought.
Start with couple of days in Dhaka. On the first day absorb as much information as you can at the National Museum, and the Liberation war museum. At night checkout the surreally National Assembly building on your way to Gulshan for some fine dining spend the next day meandering through old Dhaka, towards Sadarghat from where you’ll leave Dhaka on the launch for connecting to floating market. Enjoy floating market in Harta/ Boithakata then transferred to Barishal for overnight.
In Khulna wander through the markets and Bazaars, which burst into the life at night, on a day trip to the landmark filled historical town of Bagerhat. You will experience bus travel, rickshaw ride, serene scenery and one of a most famous building in Bangladesh – Shait Gumbad Mosque. From Khulna, try to do a short expedition into the Sundarbans.

It’s a place to relax, meet people and discover new ideas and ways of life. Taking your time will allow the country to reveal the best of itself at its own pace, as sure and steady as the rivers that flow through its veins.

A Land of Rivers
Welcome to riverine country. Bangladesh is braided together by more than 700 rivers, producing a deliciously lush landscape with more shades of green than you ever imagined. Traveling by boat is a way of life here, and provides a fabulous opportunity to see the country from a more unusual angle. This is one of the world’s most densely populated countries, but once you’re slowly floating downriver on a small wooden rowboat, it’s easy to imagine you have it all to yourself. Whether you're traveling to hectic Dhaka or to the Sundarbans' mangrove forests, boats large and small will help you explore Bangladesh's riches.

Locals say the word Chittagong originated from Chottagram (Small village) though it more likely comes from the Arakanese phrase tsi tsi gong (War should never fought) in scribed on a tablet brought by an invading Buddhist Army.
Despite its name Chittagong has been consistently fought over in 1299 Muslims occupied the city, until the Arakanese retook it and retained it until 1660, The Mughals took possession next, only to be expelled by the Arakanese in 1715 finally in 1766 the British raised their flag. By this time the Burmese had subdued the hill area of Arakan (now known as Rakhaine) and many Arakanese fled into British occupied territory south of Chittagong friction between the British and the Burmese led the first Anglo-Burmese war in 1824 and resulted in the British annexing Arakan. The Burmese was forced to give up any claims they previously had to the city followed a similar pattern to Dhaka except that the oldest parts where the city of Sadarghat now stands, were wiped out during the British and Independence periods. The Pakistani Navy shelled the city during the liberation war in 1971.

A Boat Trip
On kaptai Lake, country’s largest artificial lake, with stops at tribal villages along the way is the high light of a visit here. The lake is ringed with banana plantations and thriving patches of tropical and semi evergreen forest.

Getting off the beaten track is something of a travel cliché these days, but Bangladesh is somewhere that tourism remains in its infancy. It's easy to get the sensation that you're breaking ground here, even if your pioneering spirit is frequently attended to by being the centre of attention. Bangla culture is famously welcoming – rarely will you have cause to suspect the ulterior motives that can sometimes bedevil travel in other parts of south Asia. If you enjoy making friends, mixing with locals and travelling without bumping into too many other tourists, then this is probably just the country to explore.
