The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp is an international meeting and working place and is world renowned. Its historic campus in Antwerp's city centre houses some 650 students from over 54 different nationalities annually. inting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture as well as an Educational Master, in which our masters can immediately move on to the visual arts teacher training programme. With high-level artistic research and a packed cultural calendar, the Academy is a crossroads of thinking and doing, of action and reflection, of criticism and creation. HIGHLIGHTS:

ANNO 2023: 360 YEARS ACADEMY
The Academy - founded by artist David Teniers de Jonge - is one of the first art schools in the world and has grown over the centuries into an institution with its own face, soul and hub in the (inter)national world of art and higher art education. STUDIO AS EPICENTER
The studio is the heart of the Academy, where students, teachers and peers meet and inspire, where feedback, research and experimentation are at the epicenter. DRAWING AS A UNIFYING THREAD
For 360 years, drawing has been a thread running throughout the programme. INTERNATIONAL BIOTOPE
The world on one campus: a stimulating environment where students from more than 50 different countries meet each other. ENGLISH-LANGUAGE BACHELOR AND MASTER
The Academy is the only Flemish school of arts that offers an English-language Master’s degree as well as a complete English-language Bachelor’s degree. It offers all students an excellent opportunity for international networking and career. ACTIVE PLAYER IN THE LOCAL CULTURAL FIELD
The Academy is embedded in the cultural field through collaborations with, among others, the recently reopened Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA), the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA), the Middelheim Museum, the Fashion Museum (MoMu), and the Fotomuseum (FOMU). FASHION SHOW
For many years, our fashion show has been considered the fashion highlight of the year, bringing together more than 5,000 fashion lovers from Belgium and abroad each time while showing the designs of all fashion students. ARTISTIC RESEARCH
Besides teaching, the Academy also provides a platform for high-level artistic research with numerous research projects and doctoral research carried out by an international line-up of artists and designers. BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
One of the Academy's assets is also its central location and beautiful architecture by Pierre Bourla and others. The historic garden has been protected as a landscape since 1974 and was reactivated as an exhibition space in 2021 under the title Academy Open Air. INFRASTRUCTURE
The Academy has interesting infrastructure, including several exhibition rooms – De Lange Zaal, the Venushal, the Wintertuin and the Tempel – where students, teachers, researchers and external partners can organize exhibitions. In the MixLab, one can experiment with new techniques while customisation is possible in the wood studio, ceramics studio and print studio. The library houses an impressive catalogue of art books and the restaurant is situated in the former sculpture gallery. LECTURER AS ARTIST
Our lecturers are active as artists, designers or curator and share their personal experiences with the students. ALUMNI AS AMBASSADORS
Renowned alumni such as Henry Van De Velde, Panamarenko, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, the Antwerp Six and Demna Gvasalia spent their student days at the Academy. Legendary is the short passage of Vincent Van Gogh.

The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp is happy to host exhibitors from Belgium and abroad, who will present exciting art books and artists’ publications from the 20th and 21st centuries.

• PAST — modern antiquarian material
• PRESENT — contemporary publishers
• FUTURE — printed output of Academy students/alumni + Belgian art schools

Together, the three sections offer a unique look at the rich tradition and bright future of avant-garde and artistic printing.

Registration for exhibitors is open until 4 October.

Bij de tweede lichting van directeur Brandon Wen zwaaien er achttien masterstudenten af. Onder hen zijn er uitzonderlijk vijf Belgen.

The work of this Chilean artist Fabiola Burgos Labra is often process based, and that’s where repetition comes in. She creates stories with little elements that are focused on materials. Her work arises by experimenting with sculpture, weaving, actions and installations. Textile plays an important role in her artwork. Through this specific medium she can communicate in different ways and play with light, colour and mathematical patterns that at the same time contain history and point to a different future.

Rosy Sambwa graduated from ESMOD (FR). What marked her was the absence of African and Asian countries in her courses. This was the starting point for her research. Today, she speaks and writes about fashion, notably for the magazine ELLE Côte d’Ivoire, because every garment carries a message. In order to decolonise people’s minds, she uses clothes, as they have been used to create a superior image of certain countries and peoples.

Märta Mattsson’s jewellery explores decay and rebirth and the tension between attraction and repulsion. We all, she believes, have a powerful urge to engage in fantasies as a means to escape everyday life. And it is these fantasies which she translates into ornament and invites us to marvel over their strange familiarity.

Born in Stockholm in 1982, Märta trained at the Nääs factories in Sweden before studying at HDK – Academy of Design and Craft at Gothenburg University, where she now teaches.

JEF GEYS (1934-2018) probably was one of the most radical artists of his generation. For sure he was one of the first to explore the relationships between art and life in depth, and to investigate transdisciplinary strategies to do so. Trained in advertising at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in the 1950s, Geys successfully integrated communication and publication tools in his artistic practice. As a teacher, he considered avant-garde art a liberating and emancipating force. At the occasion of the exhibition ‘Je ziet niet wat je denkt te zien’ at WIELS, the Antwerp Academy and research group ArchiVolt pay tribute to Geys by reflecting on his practice and his legacy through four thematic conversations, an installation by Liselore Vandeput, and an exhibition with printed matter. Welcome!

Graphic designers Elisabeth Rafstedt and Johanna Ehde form Rietlanden Women’s Office. Their practice is interested in current and historical issues connected to (reproductive) work and collaborative graphic design. The basis of their work is a printed publication series called MsHeresies — an inquiry into collaborative graphic design practices and the ornamental as a form of work critique.
