SDF for dollar-paying tourists halved.

The Ministr y of Industr y, Commerce and Employ-ment announced changes to the sustainable develop-ment fees for dollar-paying tourists to boost the tourism sector, yesterday night.It announced a50 per-cent discount on the prevail-ing SDF of USD 200 for US dollar-paying tourists visit-ing the country. The effec-tive SDF with the discount will be USD 100 per person per day.Another change is the 50 percent discount on the SDF rates applied to chil-dren aged between 6 and 12 years for US dollar-paying children visiting as tourists.“The 24-hour SDF waiver for tourists staying in the border towns will continue,” the ministry stated.SDF for dollar-paying tourists halvedThe above incentives will come into effect from Sep-tember 1 and will remain ef-fective until August 31, 2027.The ministry’s an-nouncement stated that the government would conduct periodic assessments of the domestic and international tourism scenarios and may discontinue the above incen-tives to uphold and promote the High-Value Low Volume Tourism Policy after August 31, 2027

Tourism in Bhutan began in 1974, when the Government of Bhutan, in an effort to raise revenue and to promote Bhutanese unique culture and traditions to the outside world, opened its isolated country to foreigners. In 1974 a total of 287 tourists visited the Kingdom of Bhutan. The number of tourists visiting Bhutan increased to 2,850 in 1992, and rose dramatically to 7,158 in 1999. By the late 1980s tourism contributed over US$2 million in annual revenue.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸-𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝐬 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗵𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗻.

Phobjekha witnessed the first arrival of four Black-necked Crane birds for 2022-2023 winter migration to Bhutan. The four individuals includes two adults and two juveniles. They arrived at five minutes past two o’clock today, 4th November. This year’s arrival has followed similar pattern to previous year winter migration period 2021-2022 where three cranes arrival on 4th November was reported.

Flocks of this species will gradually increase in coming days with the beautiful calls echoing the valley of Phobjekha. The species will spent around four months in Bhutan with most species returning by February month of the year to their summer breeding ground. For 2021-2022 migration period, the Royal Society for Protection of Nature has counted 599 Black-Necked Cranes in the country.

Black-necked Crane bird records in Bhutan date backs to the British mission led by Pemberton (1839: 75). According to the Ali et al (1996), it was described during Perberton’s mission, there was a mentioned of shooting the ‘sarus of Bengal’ in ‘the valleys of Boomdungtung, Jugur and Jaeesah’ at altitudes of 2642 m, 2484 m and 2868 m respectively. Later ornithologist confirms that these birds refer to the Black-necked Crane, for the Sarus (Grus antigone) never occurs at those high altitude. Place described as Boomdungtung is Bumthang, Jugur is a place located a little below the confluence of the Tang Chhu with Bumthang Chhu, and Jaeesah is the place now known as Gyetsa, as may be deducted for the maps accompanying the Report (Ali et al 1996).

Places like Phobjekha, Khotokha , Bumdeling and Bumthang are important habitat areas in Bhutan for the Black-necked Cranes. Phobjekha is located at 3000 metres above sea level with wide wetland coverage valley. It is one of the important Ramsar sites in Bhutan. Every year, over 70 % of Black-necked Crane birds migrating to Bhutan arrive in Phobjekha.

The Annual Black-necked Crane festival initiated by the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) in 1998 as a part of the community based‐sustainable tourism serves as important environmental and cultural heritage. The center of attraction in the festival is the Crane Dance performing by school students. This year, Crane festival will be held on November 11, 2022.

The Royal Highlander festival was first introduced on 16th Of October in 2016 to mark the celebration of the birth of HRH the Gyalsey; 400 years of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and the Rabjung (60 years cycle) birth year of Guru Rinpoche. The Royal Highlander festival shares the beauty and the wonders of Gasa Dzongkhag through its nature, history and its age old tradition and culture, to share Gasa’s vision of “Good to Great Gasa” and to finally share all theses authenticity and the simplicity of the life of the Highlanders with our guests.

During the festival, visitors can witness The traditional offering of Buelwa (Gift offering) with Auley (traditional epic poem/song recitation tradition originated from Zhabdrung Rinpoche days) that begun during Zhabdrung Rinpoche’s reign in showing loyalty and respect by the community of Laya is being offered for dynamic and visionary leadership of our successive monarchs.

Variety of cultural programs will be performed by Layaps. The various competitions on highland animals including the Yaks, horses and Mastiffs will be held and also competition such as traditional songs and dances will be held.

The festival consists of series of stalls ranging from local based yak produce to highland technology, highland agriculture technology, medicinal herbs & plants and others.
