Nestled in Trashigang, the secluded district of eastern Bhutan, the hidden gems of Merak and Sakteng unveil a fascinating world where the Brokpas, nomadic yak herders, proudly display their remarkable culture and customs. Among their notable traits, their attire shines the brightest. The women wear red and white silk ponchos, red silk jackets adorned with intricate animal designs, and elegant red wool capes. Some may even sport braided black wool jackets as an additional touch of elegance. The men, on the other hand, wear roomy white wool trousers over leather or cloth pants, complemented by eye-catching red wool jackets and occasionally sleeveless outer garments crafted from leather. These distinctive costumes epitomize the unique identity and visual splendor of the Brokpas, creating a spectacle that is both captivating and awe-inspiring.

The National Memorial Chorten is one of the most visible and popular landmarks in Thimphu. For many Bhutanese living in Thimphu, especially those living around the chorten’s premises, and for many elderly people it is the place of daily worship as well as long evening walks with friends and family. In the early mornings you may come across smartly dressed school children snatching a brisk circumambulation on their way to school. The memorial chorten was built in 1974 in loving memory of His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo. His Majesty is fondly remembered for his great contributions to the building of modern Bhutan.
