Did You Know…How it all got started?

Dr. Robert Horwich made a trip to Belize in 1981 with the goal to save black howler monkeys. He showed up to Fallet Young’s property and quickly realized after talking with Mr. Young and other villagers that the most successful way to make a positive change for the monkeys would be to save their habitat. This habitat also happened to be the backyards of many local landowners in the area.
The landowners within the sanctuary agree to leave wildlife corridors, which are intact strips of forest, so that monkeys and other animals can safely travel between areas of habitat. They agree to leave trees that provide food to monkeys and that grow along the Belize River in order to prevent erosion. The community members participating in these efforts have led to true success for a very important species, and so that the local people can also benefit from all that the forest provides.
Check out other locations where Community Conservation, Inc. has implemented a similar community-based initiative.
Isn’t the example that Community Baboon Sanctuary has set AMAZING? 🤩🌎🐒

Did You Know?

The Community Baboon Sanctuary in Belize is a unique and special example of how local community members have banded together to save a species. The black howler monkey, referred to as 'baboon' by Belizeans, was in dire straits due to habitat destruction. Due to collaborative efforts between scientists and local Belizians that started the sanctuary in 1985, landowners from 7 villages have come together to protect valuable habitat for black howler monkeys- a species that is deeply ingrained and valued in Belizean culture.

The howler monkey population increased from 450 to 4500 individuals since CBS’s inception with this unique community conservation approach. This is absolutely AMAZING conservation work that was thought to be impossible!

What can YOU do to support habitat preservation to save species like the beautiful black howler monkey? 🐒🌎

Our Story

Enjoy a Belizean jungle adventure in the middle of the Community Baboon Sanctuary. Welcome to our home for rent. From 2014 to 2017 we rebuilt our home in the middle of a Belizean jungle right on the Belize River. This very spacious home has an open concept kitchen / living room with a master bedroom an on-suite bathroom. Our home comes with hydro, AC, hot water shower, flush toilet and laundry facilities. There is lots of room to throw a mattress in the living room for additional guests. The home is built off the ground and has a huge spacious deck that wraps around the entire house. The deck is an amazing place to view many many species of birds, lizards and our famous Black Howler Monkey’s.

Our home is located in the village of Scotland Halfmoon just outside of Bermudian Landing. the Community Baboon Sanctuary is a protected area established in 1985 to help protect the black howler monkey from threats of hunting, logging and agriculture.

Our home is part of a 42 acres farm where we have in recent years planted close to 500 coconut trees. Besides being located right on the Belize River we have 2 large 300ft x 50ft x 10ft deep ponds that attract all sorts of wildlife including crocodiles, jaguars, tapirs and more species of birds then one can hope for. Our home really is a wildlife paradise. Black Howler monkey’s are very common and can be heard at almost any time during the day. There are over 600 species of birds found in Belize and I am sure almost half those species can be found in our area at some point in the year. While jaguar sighting can be rare for the average person. Jaguar sightings and tracks are very common on our road. Fishing can be done from the Belize River or our fish ponds.

All rent monies collected on the farm are used for the day to day maintenance of the farm and to help employ local Belizeans. The rent monies collected never leaves the country of Belize.
