You meet unexpected artists in some of the most unexpected places, and yours truly recent vacation trip to Placencia in Belize allow me the opportunity to have come across one of Belize's most prolific underground artists, Belizean, Edwin X Jones, who through a most vivid explanation of his genre of art work in wood, made me realize the Belize has some of the most talented artists hidden beneath the surface of a lucrative tourist market.

It wasn't whether these Belizean artists are been given the exposure they need within Belize's blind-folded million dollar art industry, but whether they will be able to showcase their unique and creative style to a nation much less to the world around them. But seeing Edwin X's transcending passion in wood in which he would carve out any art form that one has in mind almost immediately with a machete is art that you figured could not be imagined. You just have to think about it and he can carve it out right there for you with skill and craft of unprecedented genius.

We had heard of the legendary George Gabb's Sleeping Giant in Zericote wood of which this documentary series, Belizean Legends, was inspired by. But Belize has not really seen the advancement of its underground artists like Edwin X because they are almost invisible from Belizean society being that they are already misunderstood to Belize's artistic community if there is really one. Artists like Edwin X are a rebellion in Belize's status quo of Belizean art as we know it.

As he speaks, he does not want to be connected to anyone in the past and present among his peers, and he knows that though artists like him are not mainstream, they have carved out something new that has not been done before. In my personal opinion, it is art that is spontaneously created on the spot that is taken from anyone's imagination. You just have to describe the form mentally and it can be carved out in wood with precise objectivity. That is ground breaking art in Belize, and may be seen before, but not necessarily so.

Edwin X is an revolutionary artist that is flanked by his associate artist, Tyrone Mel, who does the finishing work after Edwin produces the vision on wood. They have created a whole assembly line of production in Belizean woods of all sorts, and have identify a wood depot of best quality where they pick the best type of Belize's most beautiful woods across the Southern belt of Belize. Here, where Americans and Europeans have come to find the best in jungle resorts, but have also come to quench their deep thirst for art appreciation of this kind which they pay handsome prices for to decorate their dream homes back home.

Edwin X and his production in wood, that exhibits his Belizean art genre of instantaneous visionary art sculpting, can be seen at the art gallery and gift shop called, A Piece of Belize Wood Carvings, in Placencia, Belize, located next to the Denyse Originals on the sidewalk. For information call: 011-501-637-8834 and ask for Edwin X and Tyone Mel.

Find them and get a touch of Belizean soul!

Happy birthday barefoot

Happy 17th birthday to Barefoot Bar!🧡💙🧡💙🧡
I’ve always considered Barefoot my first born. Beginning with the want of starting our own business, Cassie and I put our hearts and souls into our vision. We dreamed of what Barefoot would be.
The planning stage was like the pregnancy, and then the birth, 17 years ago today! Wow! I can remember that day like it was yesterday. Quickly, Cassie and I realized that Barefoot would need the love, attention, patience, understanding and determination it takes to raise a child.
We’ve had our fair share of ups and downs, but through it all, Barefoot always pulls through and shines her light, welcoming all from near and far, from different backgrounds and beliefs, always opening her arms, ready to show a good time!
Our dream has become our daily reality and we have accomplished what we set out to and then some. Barefoot has become a living room for many, a safe haven, a meeting place for family and friends, the place where we have all made new friends that have become family!💚
From the Barefoot Crew to all our peeps near and far, we love you all and appreciate all the support you have shown us over the years!
Long live Barefoot! 👑

Water connects all things. Water is the most precious molecule to all things. Water runs in us, through us, and around us. Belize is wealthy in water and that is why we must protect our forests, our rivers, our lagoons, our sea - our watersheds. Water is all…
