"Stitches of our Mothers" that is the way our ladies refer to the our tradition embroidery.

Each embroidery has a tale to tell. Did you know that it takes about 10 hours to complete an embroidery.

Each one is carefully counted so that a unique design is made. Maya women sit at their candle light and make each stitch with love. It is made with love because during the process her fingers are pricked thousand times but she still continue. Because in each of her stitches there is a story that is told and she lovingly teach her daughter to keep tradition alive.

Everytime an embroidery is made, she passed on her life story, those of her ancestors and she create her on story picture for the world to see. While doing this it help create a bond with mother and daughter that will survive until the end of time.

Remember those days when we ate only sweets that our elders made for us, some were:

Stretch mi guts
Wangla
Coconut w/ sugar
Pumpkin sweet
Papaya sweet
Cassava sweet
Sweet potato

I am sure you can name more....in Toledo and Belize we all enjoy these. That is the beautiful thing about us, all cultures do nearly all the same sweets.

Over the years we have seen a drastic change in our way of life, this include in every aspect of our daily living. So what better way to bring it back then by us practicing our traditional way of life. When was the last time you saw:
* Some one grinding corn
*Beating rice
*cleaning a chicken/pig
*cutting down a cohune tree
* cutting, spitting & tatching of a house roof
* grinding of cacao & drink a calabash full
* make of homemade corn tortilla
*harvesting & cooking of xayaw (anaotto)
* planting of rice, corn, beans field
* ladies cooking together for the men
and the list goes on and on and on and onnnnnnnn
We have been loosing our tradition everyday, our children have fell in love with this new way of living, attach to a phone.

They no longer enjoy nature, spending time with family but most of all learning survival skills and to appreciate and thanks mother earth for the abundance of food and resources it gives to us daily.

So many beautiful places to visit in Belize, a small but well hidden jewel in the world. Our village Columbia has made it to #10, San Antonio #13 and Santa Teresa following.

Their is nothing better that living in Maya style for 1 day or more. Come indulge in our culture and most of all in chocolate.
