It is our new favourite day of the week here at 3DS because we get to dig into the history of our company. There are no shortage of amazing photos of our president back in the day...and I think you will all agree that he has some serious style! Circa 1989

If you happen to be on the Sea to Sky Highway near Britannia Beach and are feeling adventurous, stop in at the Britannia Mine Museum and travel back in time. Learn all about the historic mine, pan for gold and even take a train ride through the preserved haulage shafts.

The centre’s showpiece, a “Mining Tornado”, teems with everyday items, all produced thru mining. In the “Britannia A-Z Exhibit Hall”, a restored heritage building, visitors are swept back in time, with stories of the Britannia community between 1904 & 1974, when it existed as a mining town.

The Canadian Museums Association honoured the Britannia Mine Museum with its Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Facility Development and Design category. The awards committee was unanimous in their decision, declaring that “the project was nationally significant and exceeded the current standard of practice”.

National Assoc. of Homebuilders Gold Award – Best Sales Presentation Centre in North America.

ParkLane Homes and Braun Allison had us bring a 6,000 square-foot building to life, for the launch of their massive 130-acre “River District” planned community. Located on one of the last pieces of undeveloped waterfront land in Vancouver, the River District Experience Center is a multi-purpose facility that goes far beyond the scope of conventional real estate discovery centres. In a first for Vancouver, a massive topographical video projection model of the community plan features fully interactive informational overlays, allowing users to manipulate the model's content in real time. The centre has become a hub of local activity, with features like a family center, educational exhibit space and even a full 50-seat restaurant.

A CUSTOM TIME CAPSULE, CREATED BY 3DS AND INSTALLED BY THE QUEEN, HERSELF: Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke Of Edinburgh were the first passengers to arrive at the Winnipeg Airport’s new terminal, on July 3rd, 2010. She came with a special mission for the Manitoba youth of 2060: as a key part of the terminal‘s dedication ceremony, the Queen signed an official letter to the coming generations, then placed the letter into a gold-plated tube, with a rose of exquisite hand-blown glass. These were sealed into a time capsule, to be reopened in the year 2060.

This complex, exacting piece of custom fabrication is the kind of challenging project 3DS has become famous for. A unique and unusual artifact, the Royal Time Capsule had to represent no less than the throne of England. Its aesthetics had to be timeless, with a design compelling in both present and future times. Most important, the time capsule had to be brand new and function perfectly, after fifty years sealed into an impenetrable compartment.

Only 3DS could fill a demanding order like this. The artifact was Designed by Stantec Engineering and was executed by 3DS, at the very highest level of precision and craft. The Time Capsule itself is a two-foot glass cylinder, and securely contains the delicate hand-blown Queen’s Rose, along with the official letter, inside a solid stainless steel housing. The Royal Crest is laser-etched indelibly into the housing’s surface and the entire assemblage measures five feet in length. In one of the terminal’s concrete structural columns, a cutaway has been made, to contain and protect the time capsule, as it awaits its unveiling by Manitoba’s youth of tomorrow.

"35 Rings" art installation at the North Vancouver City Hall.

A series of giant rings spans the length of the wall, but appear only partially, “revealed” within a lateral pattern running parallel with the wall’s own texture. Each ring represents 3 years of the City’s history, from its 1907 incorporation to the building’s completion in 2011. The rings’ four materials – concrete, metal, glass and cast resin – represent specific areas of the city’s history and an array of culturally-resonant everyday objects is embedded deep in the resin. This public art installation ascends the building’s main entrance stairs, along with the visitor, encouraging observation of the natural space and the connection of objects within our own environment.

The Port of Prince Rupert Discovery Centre pushes the boundaries of what exhibits can be. This permanent exhibit, designed by Waddell & Conder, is a comprehensive look at the port’s history and current activities. The main components of the exhibit take their inspiration from steel shipping containers, which function as presentation surfaces for the story, told in a dynamic, strongly graphic style. Walking among these containers, visitors access a variety of AV elements, showing port operations, number of ships in dock at any time, types of cargo and a great deal more.
