May 6th has been designated School Bus Driver Appreciation Day for a very good reason. It gives teachers, students and families a wonderful opportunity to thank school bus drivers and to show them how much they value their service. It also gives PWT the opportunity to show our appreciation and on Monday, we saw several fun celebrations across multiple Student Line locations!
Thank you School Bus Drivers!
There are not enough words to describe your impact on your communities and passengers. Your continuing Dedication to ensuring every student makes it Safely Home is inspiring. Click on the video below and look for more fun celebrations as #SchoolBusDriverAppreciationWeek continues!
What started as a simple social media post nearly five years ago has turned into a real passion project for Southland's Calgary North Supervisor Nancy Hardy. Nancy started capturing sunrise photos because "our Alberta skies are so big and beautiful. I began by just sending the pictures to my parents, sisters, daughter, and niece to say GOOD MORNING from Alberta."
She started posting her photos to the Southand Alberta drivers page for a very simple reason, "the sunrise views I post to the drivers page are the exact views they all see every morning. They can’t take the pictures because they are driving, so I share mine... it makes my heart happy sharing these pictures."
Check out a sampling of Nancy's sunrise collection by clicking on the slideshow below. #sunriseoftheday #SpreadingSunshine #SafelyHome
Employees from across the Pacific Western Group of Companies travelled to Calgary this past week for a special night.
They were there to recognize Rashid Osman, a coach driver and lead trainer with Diversified Transportation Ltd of Fort McMurray in northern Alberta. Rashid is the recipient of this year’s R.B. Colborne Award of Excellence, which celebrates an employee who goes above and beyond all others in the service of customers. Rashid was selected from thirty-one other employees for this award due to his deep devotion to others and for living our company’s values daily.
The R.B. Colborne Award is named after Pacific Western’s founder, Robert Colborne, and is the company’s most prestigious employee award. It has been running since 1999. Nominees are selected by their peers and then evaluated by a committee that chooses the top nominees in each business line. From this list of names, the Board of Directors chooses a single recipient to receive the R.B. Colborne Award of Excellence.
We salute Rashid, our other R.B. Colborne Award nominees, and all our employees across the Pacific Western Transportation Group of Companies. It is important to celebrate excellence among our employees and thank our team members for their dedication to others. It is vital that we continue to celebrate all of our employees, and it was an honor to have met with Rashid and many of the R.B. Colborne nominees on this special night.
Yesterday, the TELUS BE BRAVE #EndBullying Game welcomed nearly 13,000 pink-clad students and teachers to the Scotiabank Saddledome to watch the Calgary Hitmen take on the Edmonton Oil Kings. SOUTHLAND Transportation was proud to provide transportation for this important anti-bullying event.
Yesterday, we had 106 buses and drivers running to and from the Saddledome to transport pink-clad students and teachers. Of those 106 drivers, we also had the assistance of an out-of-town driver from Okotoks, so thank you for pitching in!
We are happy to report that we had all students unloaded and seated inside the Saddledome before the puck was dropped. After the game, we set a record time getting the kids loaded and the buses departed within 15 minutes of the games end.
We all worked together as a team to make this event a huge success! Check out the slideshow to watch how everyone pulled together for a great cause. #EndBullying #bebrave #TELUS #SafelyHome #calgaryhitmen

PWT's Mobile Training Unit Featured on CTV Atlantic
Our Mobile Training Unit (MTU) is on the move again! MTU Instructor Ron Tripke is currently in Halifax, Nova Scotia, visiting the team at SOUTHLAND and offering drivers a chance to navigate a multitude of challenging and unfamiliar scenarios. Of course, they’re all simulated in a safe environment, but the experience gained is invaluable and can be applied to real-world situations.
The MTU is housed in a full-sized motorcoach with three screens that give drivers a realistic 180-degree view of the road. MTU driving modes, which include full vehicle control, accelerator, and brake applications, are fully customizable and give drivers hands-on experience in several key scenarios.
Word of the MTU's arrival in Atlantic Canada prompted a visit from the local CTV affiliate, who sent a reporter to interview Ron and try out the virtual driving experience for herself! Check out the video courtesy of CTV Morning Live.
Great job, Ron! The added experience and training our drivers receive from our Mobile Training Unit help ensure they’ll transport each and every one of our passengers to their destination and then #SafelyHome #SafeyTraining #MobileTraining
PWT was featured prominently in a recent CBC Calgary news story reporting a huge jump in transit usage in Banff National Park. 2023 saw more visitors leave their vehicles at home to take advantage of On-It Regional Transit, Roam Local Transit and the Parks Canada Shuttle service operated by Diversified Transportation. #SafelyHome #Transit #Transportation
Pope Francis arrived in Edmonton on July 23rd for an important and historic visit to Canada. A large contingent of SOUTHLAND Transportation, Cold Lake Bus Lines, Prairie Bus Lines, and Diversified Transportation Ltd. drivers were dispatched to serve the transportation needs of thousands of Canadians who wanted to be a part of the first Papal visit in over 20 years.
In all, 126 drivers and 18 site supervisors from across Northern and Southern Alberta were involved in the significant operation.
On July 24th, Pope Francis met with Indigenous peoples at the former Ermineskin Residential School in Maskwacis, Alberta and our Diversified motorcoaches provided private transportation for elders, RCMP, and Military Police attending the event. Meanwhile, our other participating companies were on standby at park-and-ride areas to transport the general public. The next day, our drivers were sent to transport those attending the pilgrimage to the site of Lac Ste. Anne and the Liturgy of the Word.
The impressive two-day mobilization of drivers was a testament to the incredible organizational and leadership skills of our people at Pacific Western Transportation Ltd.
