Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association The Cowichan TRA (CTRA) exists as a place where the human-equine relationship creates opportunities
(17)

We have several program streams that are designed to meet the abilities, needs, and goals of individual participants. These program streams include: therapeutic riding (the physical therapy end of the spectrum), therapeutic horsemanship (therapy and skill-building through horsemanship “on the ground”), and equine assisted learning (team building and learning how to communicate effectively with bot

h people and horses). Our program streams utilize the power of the human-equine bond to improve the lives of persons with varying needs who live within our community. A shared appreciation for this special human-equine relationship brings individuals and their families into our organization, where they experience inclusiveness and are given the opportunity to work collaboratively with everybody on their team. Although our program serves persons with disabilities, it has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals of all abilities. Our program serves as a hub of community action where members of our community give back through participation and volunteerism, with a culture of inclusion.

💚Lessons in Leadership💚

I am always looking for ways to build the team at CTRA because I believe that if we are a strong, supportive team for each other, we will create a welcoming space for our participants and volunteers.

Last spring, I noticed some flowers blooming and thought, "Wouldn't it be great to have some flowers around CTRA?" This led to the idea of hosting a flower planter contest for volunteers and staff. Honestly, I didn't expect the staff to be that excited about participating, but I was completely wrong. The staff and volunteers rolled up their sleeves and let their creativity shine. Their creations added beauty to our facilities all summer, and the variety of ideas everyone came up with was truly amazing!

Here’s the lesson in leadership: While a contest can spark engagement, it doesn’t always build teams. So, we’re taking our the prize money and going bowling instead!

Our outside judging panel from Providence Farm staff (big Thank You) labeled each planter
Planter #1 Most Painterly Props!
Planter #2 Most Demure!
Planter #3 Most abundant show of flowers plus captured CTRA’s horses!!
Planter #4 Most striking color combination!
Planter #5 Most classic welcome!
Planter #6 Most imaginative: capturing chilling after a ride
Planter #7 Most creative CTRA riding theme.

Jill O'Neill Executive Director

Reflecting on my first year at CTRA, I am starting to understand what the organization means to this community. I have witnessed how the Therapeutic riding and the Equine Assisted Learning programs enhance the participants lives. I have been honored to be part of the amazing team of staff and volunteers that support and deliver the programming.
CTRA is only able to deliver this programming because of the support from the donors and sponsors in this community. Every dollar we receive is valued from the $10 individual support to the thousands of dollars that come from businesses, service clubs and foundations.
Today we received a very large donation that astonished me yet again in regards to the depth of support and generosity from within the Cowichan Valley that keeps CTRA’s doors open
Thank You! Ferreira Family Fund for your continuing unwavering support of the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association.

Our Story

We have several program streams that are designed to best meet the abilities, needs, and goals of individual participants. These program streams include: therapeutic riding (the physical therapy end of the spectrum), recreational riding (therapeutic riding with a focus on recreation and outdoor activity), rider achievement levels (progressive skill development opportunity within the therapeutic context), introduction to competition (aspects of para-equestrian sport are introduced and developed), therapeutic horsemanship (therapy and skill-building through horsemanship “from the ground”), and stable management vocational development (employment training through stable management and equine interactions for persons with disabilities). Our differentiated program streams share our overarching purpose to improve the lives of persons with disabilities in our community utilizing the power of the human-equine bond. A shared appreciation for this special human-equine relationship brings myriad individuals, families, and groups within our space, positively contributing to an inclusive and collaborative social fabric in our communities. Although our program serves persons with disabilities, it has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals of all abilities. Our program serves as a hub of community action where members of our community give back through participation, volunteerism, and a culture of inclusion.
