Founded in 1996 by principal landscape architect, Virginia Burt, FCSLA, FASLA, Virginia Burt Designs is an award-winning, full service landscape architecture firm that specializes in therapeutic landscapes and residential and estate gardens. With offices in Ohio and Ontario, the firm has been involved in a wide range of projects including therapeutic gardens for hospitals and institutions, estate

master plans, and native landscape restoration in both the United States and Canada. Virginia Burt leads a team of landscape architects whose inspirations include travel, photography, collaboration with artists, fabricators & nurserymen, art, history, and the beauty of the natural world. We are excited to showcase the people that make our designs, and our remote teammate Selena from the East Coast will be joining us in-house over the next few weeks!! 🤩🌱 Welcome back!

Selena DeWolf | Landscape Designer

Selena, a graduate of Dalhousie University’s Landscape Architecture program, is en route to becoming a Licensed Landscape Architect. Born and raised on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Selena has an unwavering connection to salt air, coastal climates, and comes with over a decade of fine arts and design experience which informs her work. Selena specializes in projects featuring native plantings that harmonize with historical plant communities; her work emphasizes minimal environmental impact, seamlessly blending properties into the surrounding landscape.

This VBD garden is part of the 47th St. James Holiday House Tour! Inspired by the homeowners’ travels around the world and designed by landscape architect Virginia Burt, unique features include a Corten steel serpentine fence, Corten steel moon gate, garden shed made of salvaged materials, and granite hardscaping and surfacing details throughout. Plantings incorporate native plants, cultivars, and specimens chosen for seasonal and sensory interest. In keeping with the homeowners’ intentions of thinking global and acting local, come join the conversation of how gardens enrich our lives and provide spaces to engage local crafts persons, artisans, and other growers. What a way to start a new year: One of our first residential projects completed over 20 years ago - just won a 2022 APALA AWARD OF EXCELLENCE in the category of Residential Landscape Architecture! Timeless design indeed and huge shout out to the VBD team for pulling this project out of the archives.

Project fun fact: Both beginning their careers, paintings were given to landscape architect Virginia Burt by the homeowner and local artist in return for design services - a trade of artforms.
