So disappointing to see our beautiful Island being treated so poorly! Campfires right in front of the no fire sign, ci******es, and cans thrown on the beach… 😞

If you see any suspicious or dangerous activity on Beaubears Island, please report it to us, Parks Canada (National Park Dispatch at 1-877-852-3100), or call 911.

Hi Miramichi! Please read! ‼️

Unfortunately, we feel as though we need to release another reminder in light of recent events:
FIRES of any and all kinds are strictly PROHIBITED on Beaubears Island. This includes, but is not limited to:

🚫CAMPFIRES,
🚫BONFIRES,
🚫SMOKING,
🚫PROPANE,
🚫BBQ’S, and GRILLS.

This rule also protects the areas on the perimeter of Beaubears Island. Fires are prohibited on the beach, banks, rocks, dock, and absolutely everywhere else on the Island.

As Beaubears Island is a National Historic Site, these rules are enforced by Parks Canada to protect our Island from forest fire. Fires on Beaubears Island are immediately reported to authorities. ‼️

There have been a few incidents recently, and it's important to protect this beautiful and historic area. The Island is not only home to wildlife, but also a significant part of our local heritage. Let's all do our part to keep it safe and fire-free. Please spread the word, and respect the regulations to help preserve Beaubears Island for future generations! 🌲

Unfortunately, we feel like we need to put out another reminder in light of recent events. Fires of any and all kinds are strictly prohibited on Beaubears Island. That includes NO CAMPFIRES, NO BONFIRES, NO BBQ’S, and NO PROPANE. 🚫

This rule also applies to the beach, banks, rocks, and sandy areas of Beaubears Island. Fires are prohibited everywhere on Beaubears Island, and will be reported immediately to authorities.

There have been a few incidents recently, and it's important to protect this beautiful and historic area. The island is not only home to wildlife but also a significant part of our local heritage. Let's all do our part to keep it safe and fire-free. Please spread the word and respect the regulations to help preserve Beaubears Island for future generations! 🌲

Some of the Beaubears Staff took a nice hike on the Island today, and look what they found! The “Witness Trees” are some of the oldest trees in the Miramichi Region, surviving the Great Miramichi Fire in 1825 - making some of them well over 200 years old!

These trees are very important to Miramichi, and have witnessed hundreds of years of local history, where other buildings, trees, and structures were lost. 🌲

This is why it is so important that we do not have campfires on Beaubears Island. Our Island is not only historically significant, but a haven for wildlife, and a glorious ecosystem that could be so easily lost due to a fire. Our Miramichi history is so important, and the Witness Trees have watched us grow into a flourishing city!

Please help to keep our Island safe, and respect Parks Canada’s commitment to prohibiting camping and camp fires on the Island! 🦅

Hi everyone!

An item of sentimental value was found in our parking lot here in front of the Beaubears Island Interpretive Centre! If you believe it's yours, please reach out and describe it in detail so we can return it to the rightful owner. We'd love to reunite it with whoever is missing it, as I’m sure that someone will be very upset when they realize it has been lost!

Hi all! Just a message that we will have reduced services from Monday - Friday this week and next, as our summer students have gone back to school! We will only be offering Ferry Service to the Island, and admission to our Interpretive Centre during weekdays, but guided tours and other services will still be available on weekends until September 14th! 😁

Thank you for your understanding!

IF YOU ENCOUNTER A BEAR / Parks Canada

Bears are very intelligent and complex animals. Each bear and each encounter is unique; there is no single strategy that will work in all situations.

Some guidelines:

Stay calm. Most bears don't want to attack you; they usually want to avoid you and ensure you're not a threat. Bears may bluff their way out of an encounter by charging and then turning away at the last second. Bears may also react defensively by woofing, growling, snapping their jaws, and laying their ears back.

Immediately pick up small children and stay in a group.

Don't drop your pack. It can provide protection.

Back away slowly, never run! Bears can run as fast as a race- horse, both uphill and downhill.

Talk calmly and firmly. If a bear rears on its hind legs and waves its nose about, it is trying to identify you. Remain still and talk calmly so it knows you are a human and not a prey animal. A scream or sudden movement may trigger an attack.

Leave the area or take a detour. If this is impossible, wait until the bear moves away. Always leave the bear an escape route.

Bear Spray?
Effectiveness is not guaranteed!

Recent research indicates that bear spray can be effective against some bears when used properly. If you plan to carry it, be aware that wind, spray distance, rain and product shelf life can all influence how well it works. Carefully read directions on the can prior to your trip. The best way to live safely with bears is to avoid contact with them.

Bears do not like surprises. Try to avoid such encounters by being alert and making noise.

If you surprise a bear and it defends itself:

If you have bear spray, use it. If contact has occurred or is imminent, PLAY DEAD! Lie on your stomach with legs apart. Protect your face, the back of your head and neck with your arms. Remain still until the bear leaves the area. These attacks seldom last more than a few minutes. While fighting back usually increases the intensity of such an attack, in some cases it has caused the bear to leave. If the attack continues for more than several minutes, consider fighting back.

If a bear stalks you and then attacks, or attacks at night:

DON'T PLAY DEAD - FIGHT BACK!

First – try to escape, preferably to a building, car or up a tree. If you can't escape, or if the bear follows, use bear spray, or shout and try to intimidate the bear with a branch or rock. Do whatever it takes to let the bear know you are not easy prey. This kind of attack is very rare but can be very serious because it often means the bear is looking for food and preying on you.

But please remember, our wildlife is also protected! Make sure to be respectful and mindful of our wildlife when visiting the Island! 🐻
