DID YOU KNOW?

Loons Breeding Plumage
In its summer breeding plumage, the common loon has a black-and-white checkered back, iridescent black head and neck, black bill, red eyes, a prominent white “necklace” marking around the neck, and a much smaller white “chinstrap” marking at the throat. The white feathers of the belly and wing linings are present year-round.

At the end of the breeding season, adult loons begin their molt. During this time, they transition from their striking black-and-white breeding plumage into their gray-and-white winter plumage. This transition typically begins with the feathers surrounding the bill. Molting usually begins in late September or early October.

In its winter plumage, the Common Loon is dark gray above with a white breast, belly, and wing linings. The bill is light gray, and the eyes dull to a deep reddish-brown.

Juvenile loons are similar to wintering adult loons in appearance. The feathers on their backs and heads are grayish-brown, and their undersides are white. Juvenile loons can be told apart from wintering adults by the distinct whitish-gray tips of their feathers, which create a scalloped pattern.

Finally saw Swans on our lake! First saw them on the water at the other end of the lake and wasn’t quite sure what I was seeing as I didn’t have my glasses. Then one got up a bit to flutter open it’s wings at which point I knew it was swans! There were 6 of them! What a sight to see! The video doesn’t do it justice but it’s all I got. Beautiful creatures!

Our birdies sure do get spoiled! They get excited when Jim pulls out the seed bin. 🥰🐥🐦🐧🦉We even had a barred owl on it a couple nights ago! So far we get blue jays, cardinals, Grossbeaks, sparrows, woodpeckers, doves, goldfinches, chickadees, red winged blackbirds, common grackle’s and purple finches.

Just put in a new floating dock to replace the pole dock we had. This one is so much better then the old one! Better socially as you can all sit facing each other and people can get around the chairs more easily. It’s also further out from the shore thus safer to dive from. Because of its large size, shape and anchor system it’s extremely stable…it’s actually hard to feel any movement at all to be honest.

Biggest windstorm we’ve ever had resulted in this. We are so very lucky to have such wonderful friends around the lake to help us deal with this. Thanks to them the damage is barely noticeable!

Our latest visitor ❤️ Such vividly striking colouring in the feathers ❤️ She was here twice last week ❤️

The video doesn’t show the colouring at all for some reason but it was like a bronze-green-yellow-orange iridescence.

We have always seen wild turkey tracks on the property but first time to actually see one here. Strange to see one all alone as they are usually in flocks.

And then there was 2 🦌❤️🦌.

8 WAYS PADDLING CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH:

…research shows that paddling is good not only for our physical health, but for our mental health as well!

Here are some of the benefits that will have you reaching for your paddle:

Lowers stress levels: Being out on the water has a calming effect on the brain and can help lower stress levels.

Boosts your mood: Regular paddling can help lower levels of depression and anxiety.

Builds confidence: Set paddling goals! Overcoming challenges builds confidence, whether you are a beginner tuning up your j-stroke, or a paddling pro on a backcountry dream trip.

Works the upper body: Increase muscle strength, particularly in the back, arms, shoulders and chest, from moving the paddle against the natural resistance of the water.

Increases core strength: With each paddle stroke forward you rotate your torso, which really engages the core muscles. These muscles also help to balance your canoe/kayak.

Increases leg strength: Kayakers receive the additional benefit of increased leg strength through isometric contractions. You apply pressure with your legs as you turn and balance your kayak which causes these muscles to tighten and, over time, builds strength.

Protects your joints: Paddling is a low-impact activity, which reduces the risk of wear and tear on joints compared to many other activities.

Improves cardiovascular health: Paddling is a great exercise to elevate the heart rate and improve cardiovascular health.

There are endless paddling opportunities. Explore a marsh, meander down a river, or plan a whitewater adventure!

These photos don’t do the water clarity justice but they are the best we can come up with. It’s so clear you can see fish swimming from 20’ away! It’s so clean you can actually drink from it! It’s a spring fed lake with more springs then we can count on 2 hands! This is what helps to keep it clean and clear.

Finally found a survey of the lake! Thanks Tom!
