Bull kelp (nereocystis luetkeana) is a native algal seaweed that creates a vibrant + rich underwater ecosystem where countless species (over 750!) in our waters can thrive.

Known to help buffer climate change + exchange carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, these vast, often overlooked, ocean forests are as life-giving, abundant, diverse and important for life on earth as any of our terrestrial forests.💧🌿🐟️

When done mindfully and with appropriate research, did you know it can also be sustainably harvested by hand?* Known as one of the fastest growing organisms in the world, bull kelp is rich in minerals, delicious, and easy to prepare.

Swipe along to see one of our favourite recipes: a tasty Ginger Sesame Kelp salad!

Have you ever tried bull kelp? 💚

*Whenever possible, harvest via salvaging is the most mindful option. Bull kelp can often be found freshly washed up on beaches! Keep an eye out for clean + smooth fronds - any with signs of white spots, holes or tattered edges should not be harvested.

The great journey has begun. 💧🐋✨

Did you know? Almost all of the humpbacks we see in the waters off northeastern Vancouver Island are known to migrate to Hawaii (a handful instead head to Mexico) during the winter months! These gentle giants spend their summers in our cold, deep waters feeding in the productive, nutrient-rich ecosystem before venturing south to warm tropical waters— where they won't eat until their return!— for mating or birthing their calves over the winter months.

Typically these staggered departures span through early November-March, with the average migration length being around 4,830km (3,000 miles) and taking as few as 28-36 days. This incredible journey is the the longest migration of any mammal on the planet.

Throughout this past year, local researchers from were able to document the return of 17 mothers with their first-year calves in our waters.

Many of our guests + crew were lucky to have an opportunity to see these Mamas teaching their babies how to feed, breach, and explore their new surroundings. 🫶🏼🩵

2024 Photo Contest 〰️ Honourable Mention 🌟

"This was one of my best memories from the entire week, taken as we headed out into the warm evening sun.

We saw a humpback whilst we were out, we watched the sun set and the moon rise, but the best part was as the light faded and we paddled back to camp, hearing other whales pass by in the distant dark waters around us.

It was properly magical!"

How beautiful is this sunset?! Thanks so much for submitting, Richard 🌅

2024 Photo Contest 〰️ Honourable Mention 🌟

"I really loved this picture because it captures the scarcity of true isolation. Although I kayaked with a fantastic group of people, I felt a rare sense of serenity and peace out on the water. I was alive and living each moment as it came, simply breathing and paddling and staring. Now that I am home, I yearn for that same sense of tranquility. It is a beautiful thing to just be.

Just be present. Just be breathing. Just be here.

However, one of the main reasons I chose this photo was because of the subject. This moment shows Gigi, a fantastic guide who truly embodies the outdoors. I wanted to give a special thanks to all the people at camp that made our adventure unforgettable.

Our guides were so knowledgeable about the geography, history, wildlife, kayaking, and so much more. We cannot show enough appreciation for their hard work and dedication. Thank you!"

What a phenomenal submission! Thank you, Cait for sharing your experience with us. 🌊🩵

Our 2024 Photo Contest 1st Place WINNER is... Theo Tzelepoglou! 🌟✨

Here is his magical moment:

“We were on our way back from a bioluminescence night paddle with our guide, when I felt like taking a photo of the stars before bedtime. I went a little further away from the camp and made several attempts.

One of our other group members lit up his tent just then, and I was able to capture this shot! As the camera paused, I could hear the cetaceans coming up to breathe in the darkness - it was magical!”

Congratulations, Theo! You have won a $1,000 gift certificate towards a future Spirit of the West Adventures trip. 🐋🫶🏼💫

Our 2024 Photo Contest 2nd Place Winner is... Calum Maclean 🌟✨

Here is his magical moment:

"Whale!" The cry echoed around camp. Guests all rushed to the rocks, hopping out of the hot tub, and carrying cameras. At first distant, the fins got closer. As they surfaced, we heard the unmistakable blows of air. They glided closer to the camp, first heading East before reversing direction. The calm, quiet waters of the Johnstone Strait carried the sound to our ears.

One fin looked smaller than the rest. Was it? Could it be? Yes! A pod of Orcas. Some of the group, now giddy with happiness, shouted: "There's three of them, or maybe four!"

The guides all rushed over, dinner prep paused, for at least a few minutes. Gazing as a group, we were now all invested in this one moment. Our guide Cait threw up her hands, 'Yes!'

The shared experience, to see these creatures, at home, on their own terms was a joy. A joy to live long in the memory.”

Congratulations, Calum! You have won a $500 gift certificate towards a future Spirit of the West Adventures trip. 🐋🫶🏼💫

As we get closer to announcing our 2024 Photo Contest winner, we wanted to reminisce on last years winning submission that resonated with our whole team. 🫶🏼🌟💫

Tyler's magical moment:

"This picture was taken our first full day out on the water. I was all excited to go see the humpbacks, and I couldn't wait to see the bald eagles. Those were the big, majestic animals that I don't get to see really ever where I live. As we set out, there was this rock absolutely covered in seagulls. I get to see seagulls all the time out where I live, so I didn't really think much of it. As we got closer, I decided to just get my camera out and use the seagulls to get my settings adjusted for the lighting.

Suddenly, all the seagulls took off. I snapped this picture as they were taking off, but then I put the camera away and just sat there watching the seagulls. These were animals I wasn't even planning to pay attention to, and then in this moment they transformed into a beautiful scene of birds flying all around us with the fog slowly lifting off the water.

It was beautiful, and it was a moment that I was ready to write it off as just something commonplace. This photo has become a reminder to me that beauty in nature, that awe-inspiring moment, doesn't have to come from what we expect to be amazing like the whales or the eagles (though we did have plenty of amazing experiences with those, too), but it can come from the everyday moments that we tend to overlook.

This photo is my reminder to be open to seeing the beauty that's around me every single day and in the small moments because that's often where we find happiness and peace."

We cannot wait to announce this year's winners and showcase all the magical moments that our wonderful guests took the time to share with us!

Stay tuned... ✨
