Coast Mountain Expeditions

Coast Mountain Expeditions Coast Mountain Expeditions offers multi-day guided kayak tours in the Discovery Islands.

35 years ago, Ralph and Lannie Keller founded Coast Mountain Expeditions to support an off-grid island homestead lifestyle. We hand built Canada’s first kayak lodge and became one of BC’s original kayak tour companies. The wisdom of experience, and help from (son) Albert and other talented folk have perfected our offerings – now including superb multi-day kayak adventures, lodge-based and daytrip

kayaking, and kayak instruction for beginner to advanced paddlers. Discovery Islands Lodge is our end-of-the-road kayakers’ B&B on Quadra Island. We welcome you to a kayakers’ paradise of sheltered ocean, towering mountain vistas, rainforest shores, marine parks and abundant wildlife… along with down-home friendliness and wholesome meals from garden and ocean.

Tucked in a private bay, our Read Island lodge embodies rustic comfort and backwoods charm. With strong backs and very little money, Ralph, with help from Lannie’s brother Steve, salvaged logs and milled wood for the lodge on a homemade sawmill. It took three years of building (interspersed with tree planting gigs), but the lodge was built, and the dream came alive! They’re still living it; Ralph and Lannie live year round nearby on the property.

I know, we post a lot of photos of paddlers and waterfalls. We do it because paddling as close as you can get to a waterfall is one of the coolest things you can do in a sea kayak, and we highly recommend the experience. We’re also sharing this photo because our Toba Waterfalls Expeditions are our only expedition trips with space still available this summer (we still have space on several lodge-based trips).

This is Discovery Islands Lodge, our northern Quadra Island location. It’s the home of our Surge Narrows Lodge Getaway trips, and we just love the vibe! We don’t know if it’s the epic night skies, floating sauna, mountain views, amazing kayaking…it could be the great staff 😉, or maybe it’s our lodge guests who always seem to be like-minded, thoughtful, and fun to be around. Come see for yourself!

Boats at camp. It’s easy to think of kayaking as a water sport, but it’s so much more than that. A kayak is first and foremost a means of wilderness access. Some of my favourite kayaking moments have been on land: discovering hidden waterfalls, ancient cedars, river swimming spots…Sometimes the journey is just beginning when you pull your boat up after a day of paddling.

People bring all sorts of strange things along on kayak trips, and we thought we’d seen it all…until this man brought out his bagpipes! The sound of the pipes filling the early morning air was an unforgettable experience. Who knows what unusual instrument will be pulled from a kayak hatch next! We love surprises…

We take great pride in offering fresh, delicious, and healthy food on all of our trips. Almost everything is handcrafted right here in the kitchen, and we grow as much as we can in our Read Island garden. Our menu is intentionally vegetarian/pescatarian for climate/ethical reasons; we think the food tastes even better that way!

Just one of many spectacular spots on our Toba Waterfalls Expedition. We’ve been leading trips up Toba for more than 30 years, and have learned a thing or two about the place during that time. These trips usually fill up right away, but this year we still have a handful of open spaces left on our Toba Waterfalls Expeditions.

Some of the neatest stuff can be found by looking down! That’s why we schedule all of our Surge Narrows Lodge Getaways so that we get to explore the Surge Narrows Marine Park on a low tide slack. Not only does this give us the best opportunity to observe the spectacular inter-tidal biodiversity, it also sets us up for a fun and relaxing drift with the current.

Boats on the dock at Discovery Islands Lodge, our Quadra Island location. This is where we base our Surge Narrows Lodge Getaway trips, and it’s an incredible base for exploring the Discovery Islands. We plan all of our trips so that we have great tides for paddling the nearby Surge Narrows Marine Park.

It’s stunning vista after stunning vista on our Bute Fjordlands Expedition. This is one of our favourite trip routes. It’s rugged, wild, and remote, but also not too challenging for most people. 📸Katrina Laube.
