We are excited to announce registration is open for “Examining Wild Play in Early Childhood.” This will be our first virtual Professional development opportunity of the 2024 fall season!
Wild play is a distinct and beneficial form of play rooted in real experiences, processes, and explorations where nature acts as the co-player. Wild play within outdoor natural environments affords opportunities for complexity, spontaneity, curiosity, creativity, and entanglement. This presentation will focus on insights drawn from research focused on wild play programs where children immerse within outdoor areas repeatedly and over extended periods of time. By redefining what we mean by wild play in early childhood education fundamentally shifts our profession and broadens experiences for children and educators. We will highlight how to support wild play within centre-based spaces.

About our Facilitator: Debra Harwood (PhD) is a recently retired Bachelor of Early Childhood Education Professor and author. Debra has been involved in Early Childhood Education for more than 20 years. As a practitioner and researcher, Debra has collaborated directly with educators, families and young children in Ontario, British Columbia, and internationally. Her teaching and research focused on early child development and curriculum, nature pedagogies, professionalism, community capacity building, and ethical research practices with young children and their families.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and joy filled long weekend. As we celebrate Canada Day this year, we will be holding space for all the people throughout our country and throughout the world. At the PPRC we continue our journey of learning to be allies for vulnerable communities, we acknowledge that we still have a lot of work to do to become active allies in Truth and Reconciliation! We promise to continue this important work so that we can help to make Canada a vibrant and inclusive place to live!

Tinkering with Nature
Last week, educators had the opportunity to attend the Tinkering with Nature learning opportunity at the PPRC.
Tinkering is an intentional act of engaging with materials to generate innovative ideas or creations. The art of tinkering deepens a child’s understanding of the aesthetic qualities of materials and allows the educator to inquire deeply about the learning.
Workshop attendees explored connections between open-ended play, science concepts, artistic design, engineering, and makerspaces. They learned how to bring this innovative hands-on approach will allow you to consider how you might use nature to create tinkering spaces in your own centre or classroom.

Here in the PPRC, we are continuing to learn and unpack what it means to be an ally to the 2SLGBTQIA+🌈. We strive to make our space as safe as it can be for all people, and we celebrate everyone throughout the entire year and especially during Pride Month!!!
We have many resources available in the PPRC to help you grow on your inclusivity journey. We believe that books can be a powerful tool to share kindness and love in your early years program. Here are some of our favourites!

Environmental education has a profound place in the Early Years. Join Candice as we dig into the benefits of being outdoors, grow our curiosity about place-based education, and plant the seeds through conversation and questions about what this can look like in your programs.

During this event, we will spend time outdoors to deepen our understanding of the Forest School approach and be grounded through participation in the very experiences that we are advocating for children.

Candice Lalonde is a Registered Early Childhood Educator, leader and pedagogist with North Lambton EarlyON Child and Family Centre. Candice joined the Pedagogist Network of Ontario in 2019 and completed her training as a Forest School Practitioner in 2023. Candice brings a passion for the outdoors and for critical reflection in everything she does.

Join us on Monday evening as we explore a Merrily podcast together. We will pause and reflect on what ignites us and what keeps us passionate about our careers in the early years. Together we will consider how play, participation and possibilities intertwine; and fill us with a sense of wonder, curiosity, and joy.
Join PPRC staff as we listen to, examine, and honour our own stories as early learning practitioners.

Problem solving solutions, through conflict resolution, is an approach in which adults support young children to be involved in the resolution of conflict. Children will gain problem solving skills which will support them throughout life. Learn how to utilize a self-reg lens to read, recognize, reduce, reflect, and respond to children’s big emotions.

Children learn social-emotional skills by watching, practicing, and adapting these competencies. By helping children practice and adopt heathy ways of solving problems, it will help them to manage those big emotions, think creatively and use conversations to solve their problems before it becomes a bigger issue.

We all face conflict, whether big or small. Join us as we discuss problem focused solutions that will reduce conflict that may arise in your classroom, program, or home.

On Monday night, educators had the opportunity to explore woodworking in the early years with one Lambton College’s graduating ECE students, Larissa! Thank you so much Larissa for opening the gates of creativity and the possibility of woodworking in programs with children!
Woodworking in the early years is a holistic pathway to complex problem-solving and a progressive creative outlet for children to express themselves. The tactile science of woodworking has long-term benefits focused on an inquiry-based approach and supports mental health in children. We explored what is "safe as necessary" and how to get started implementing this enriching experience with the children in your life. What a great opportunity for our community!
Thanks again Larissa!
