I used to think we’d make the lodge our legacy. Our mark on the world. Our page in history.

The first thing you’ve taught me, is thats actually you.

Blood, sweat, tears and every last dollar we have or can borrow has gone into this dream. I’ll be honest and say the last 4 weeks have been the hardest personally and professionally of my life, pushing every physical and mental limit I have. Tough times push every negative, bad habit, or failure to the forefront. Tough times try their hardest to steer dreams off course.

We have so many people calling, emailing, showing up, pleading for us to open so they can come visit us here. I’ve never been more confident in what we’re doing. It feels so close, like I’ll wake up tomorrow and see guests lining up for coffee or enjoying a show outside.

Instead it’s a mad scramble to the finish line. It’s hard to imagine that we’re not even one year in to this - and that’s part of our issue, as we’re locked out of most COVID-19 recovery funding being a brand new business.

It took a large amount of wind out of my sail to be denied one of 20 Bruce County Tourism Innovation grants, both with the Lodge and Hi Bruce!, because of all the talk of government help it was the only help we qualified for. No wage subsidies, no signage grants, no revenue. We’ll be able to apply for Facebook marketing & PPE help, but this is small business on hard mode.

Instead of stained, the deck is stacked - and yet we’re still playing hands. I’ve gambled our entire family’s future.

I really needed to read through this article and the comments posted this past weekend, because it really showcases WHY people care. You share our passion, you want us to succeed, you offer to help and you’ll be the first to come as we open our doors this August.

We wouldn’t be here, literally, without you.

To know that a community like this has our backs means we don’t need grants. We’ve been getting them in the form of likes, love, comments and shares for a year. We didn’t set off in this asking for government support and we will survive like that now - it’ll be a little sweeter when we arrive at our destination and you can bet your ass you’re invited to the no-grants party (people named Grant still allowed to come)

So as we head out today crossing our fingers and hope for an approval on yet another credit card to finish our patio we continue to press forward.

Kristin and I will soon meet our daughter, and I’m completely torn in looking at our October bookings and realizing that I may see her a handful of times in her first month. A 6 hour round trip in a day isn’t something I’ve hid from, but we no longer have the luxury of generating no revenue here.

I need to make this work - It will. The pressure is indescribable but doing what we’re trying to do here requires fear to be put aside.

We have 6 months of off season in a pandemic to make this work, or we’ll lose our dream. It is as dire as that.

So there’s an update - perhaps more drastic than you’d expect, but the real life picture can’t always be pretty. Our job postings and fall event announcements will go out this week - The story of The Red Bay Lodge never ends.

We've been very much enjoying spring in Red Bay, and the preparation hasn't stopped internally. This situation is a bit of a nightmare for us, and we're trying to adapt the best we can.

It was very difficult seeing the possibility of summer fade away, but we're going to press forward in a safe controlled manner when permitted. Tomorrow was initially going to be our chance to show the lodge to many of our family & friends for our wedding - we'll figure out a time to reschedule that this summer and hope the situation allows for many of you to join us to celebrate.

On Friday, May 1st we're releasing Episode 2 & 3 of A Lodge Made Of Love. We're announcing both the best & worst news of our lives - you just have to come along.

To everyone thinking about us, messaging us, and offering support - thank you, we wouldn't be able to go forward without you! We'll help make those memories very soon.

51 Weeks ago our family took a chilly winter vacation to The Bruce Peninsula - one that sparked a journey that would change our lives forever.

In that -30 degree January weather we enjoyed incredible walks on The Bruce Trail, local food served with a smile, & a new perspective on the majestic beauty of Tobermory. We made memories that would last a life time.

For me, I'll always remember the view out the window, sipping coffee watching the waves crash on The Lions Head Lighthouse, and then bundling up the next morning to get into an ice crevice for a shot.

Everyone is sad to see the devastating damage today, but if there's something we've learned in these past 51 weeks it's that THIS community won't take this sitting down - I bet they're already up planning the rebirth.
