🌎Happy Earth Day! Forget not to spend time attuning to 🌳☀️🌲

To honour Earth Day 2020. Photo by Danny Baker.
A poem for Papatūānuku – Mother Earth, by Ngāti Hine/Ngāpuhi writer Nadine Anne Hura, and recently shared by Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand:

🍃Rest now, e Papatūānuku
Breathe easy and settle
Right here where you are
We’ll not move upon you
For awhile🍃

We’ll stop, we’ll cease
We’ll slow down and stay home

Draw each other close and be kind
Kinder than we’ve ever been.
I wish we could say we were doing it for you
as much as ourselves

But hei aha

We’re doing it anyway

It’s right. It’s time.
Time to return
Time to remember
Time to listen and forgive
Time to withhold judgment
Time to cry
Time to think

About others

Remove our shoes
Press hands to soil
Sift grains between fingers

🍃 Gentle palms

Time to plant
Time to wait
Time to notice
To whom we belong

For now it’s just you
And the wind
And the forests and the oceans and the sky full of rain

Finally, it’s raining!

Ka turuturu te wai kamo o Rangi ki runga i a koe

🍃Embrace it

This sacrifice of solitude we have carved out for you

He iti noaiho – a small offering
People always said it wasn’t possible
To ground flights and stay home and stop our habits of consumption

But it was
It always was.

We were just afraid of how much it was going to hurt
– and it IS hurting and it will hurt and continue to hurt
But not as much as you have been hurt.

So be still now

Wrap your hills around our absence
Loosen the concrete belt cinched tight at your waist

Rest.
Breathe.
Recover.
Heal –

And we will do the same.

🍃❤️

Please consider purchasing gift certificates, ordering take-out, and supporting this campaign.

Great news:

The City of Thunder Bay will be expanding its curbside recycling pick-up to include ALL #1 and 2 plastics starting July 1st! This includes most clamshell containers used for produce items. Currently, only #1 and 2 plastic bottles are accepted. This a step forward in reducing the amount of waste entering the landfill. Read more here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/thunder-bay-plastic-recycling-1.5507816

You can further reduce your own waste footprint by setting up a backyard composter, bringing reusable shopping bags and buying in bulk whenever possible, as well as refusing single-use plastics! To learn more about waste reduction visit www.ecosuperior.org!

Storytelling is possibly the most important tradition humans possess. Stories nourish, entertain, and inspire. Never underestimate the power of stories. I have always ♥️’d stories. We may actually story ourselves into new ways of being. The opportunity is here. The depth of who we become, will depend on the depth of our imagination. Let’s start imagining.

Despite all the changes you may be facing due to a microscopic virus, thankfully, our Sun, and Earth, are continuing their eternal business. Today: March 19, 2020, marks our Spring Equinox. Perhaps, while honouring the call to keep physical-distant from other humans, you may find a way to celebrate in/with the Boreal Forest, on the Northshore of Lake Superior, where er you are, perhaps searching for signs of Spring (and they are there!) despite our beautiful snowfall today. (Even the infamous annual traditions at Stonehenge, UK, and Chichen Itza, Mexico were cancelled). Perhaps, this may even inspire an annual tradition for you and, your loved ones! Share with us your inspiration of quiet solitude or with family! And, please tag us!

As humanity is facing an unprecedented time, we wish you all peace, calm, beauty and good health. And, as you minimize social interactions, and, self-isolate, may quiet solitude embrace you, and, may technology be used only to bring informed prudence, paired with peace, connection, and inspiration. And, since a sense of peace, belonging and unity also boosts immunity, here’s an online book club you may enjoy:

The beauty of an Arctic sundog... FYI - sun dogs are caused by sunlight refracting through icy clouds, and, it is magical, and, beautiful. ‘Technically,’ it is also known as ‘parhelia,’ it is a patch of light, and can even be rainbow-coloured (as it was here today), that can occur on either side (or both) of the sun, often around sunrise or sunset.

Couldn’t resist. ❄️ So far, the only sighting of a polar bear is a poster on a wall. However, it is an honour to walk, snow-machine, and mush on the spectacular landscape where the largest (land) carnivores on Earth roam free. Cheers!

Open up to all the small miracles...
Until its calmness can claim you.”

High Arctic sunset, just before landing. Arctic Bay only began seeing the sun above the horizon a few weeks ago, after a few months of darkness. Each day lengthens by 13 min, so by the end of the week, the daylight will be more than an hour longer than today!
