A pretty disappointing day today when I discovered that the entire itinerary I planned for one of my newest clients was not going to happen

It was so excited putting this logistically challenging adventure together for him and then having to tell him it won't work. Why not?

Rocky Mountaineer cannot accommodate a wheelchair that is more than 23" wide. My clients powerchair is 25.5".

But

This just allows me to learn new things and source new options for him! I'll take that as a win.

Back to square two tomorrow!!

Have you ever traveled solo with a mobility issue that requires you to use a wheelchair/scooter? I use a scooter when I travel to Las Vegas and I ALWAYS rent one when going on a cruise.

One of the most infuriating things I come across is experiencing a loss of independence, when the whole reason I'm traveling solo, is to be independent!

I'm referring to the simple task of getting into a hotel room or cruise cabin. Most do NOT have automatic doors and for someone that has limited &/or no mobility, to get off their mobility device and physically open the doors, it can ruin your entire vacation, not to mention your spirit!

For my clients with mobility challenges, I will always promote cruise lines that offer automatic doors to their cabins on a cruise ship. It is a game changer and allows you to remain independent, which is the goal!

I've been wearing the RHEO Power Knee for two weeks and I have to say, it is not for me.
I WOULD be great for a new amputee but after 39 years, I find it heavy, cumbersome, and well, noisy. I sound like a storm trooper coming.

It DOES have positives and I found it so much easier to walk up even the slightest ramp.

On that note, back to my R380 for a bit. I do like the normal RHEO knee and I think I will apply for that funding. It has stumble control and this is a very important feature for me. Do I fall a lot? NO, but I do tend to rush a lot and this will be a nice feature to physically say, slow down a bit lady!

I first met Chris Koch - If I Can when we were kids, back in the 80s!

He truly is inspiring to watch and I love his humor. We grew up as part of the The War Amps CHAMP program (Child Amputee) & I like to give credit where credit is due (at least for me). The CHAMP program taught me to be ME! It gave me confidence and the tools to understand that it is ok to be different.

Someday, when Chris makes it to my area, I plan to sit down with him and discuss travel, the highs and lows of it, when traveling solo with a mobility challenge.

Keep on rolling Chris! I might have to invest in this type of camera myself (as I like solo travel too!)

HAPPY AMPUTATION DAY TO ME!

39 years ago I became an above knee amputee at the age of 8. I was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma in October 1984. As soon as I was diagnosed we started chemotherapy. On April 24 1985, Michael Rock saved my life and I am forever grateful to this man.

I do remember asking him if my leg would grow back (I was 8). It didn't in case anyone is wondering. :) The picture below is of me while going through treatment. I hated wearing a wig so I always wore a bandana or something like it.

So for anyone facing a challenge in life that is overwhelming and scary, keep smiling, keep laughing, and you WILL get through it.

I'm currently testing out the Rheo knee for a couple weeks. I've never had a microprocessor knee before and I've been an amputee since 1985! I have heard great things about stability and making it easier to walk gait wise. As I get older.......these things are important to me as an above knee amputee with Rheumatoid Arthritis. It's exhausting on my real foot & knee.

Do you have the Rheo knee (or any other microprocessor knee)? I travel quite often & since I have to plug this guy in, what has been your experience, especially in Europe & countries where the plugs are different?

When you ask for a shower chair and get this....

This situation was rectified but thought it was a good laugh 😃

This is a first and I had to share.

I always request a shower chair when travelling and when I got back to my room at MGM Grand Las Vegas on Sunday night, this is what I came "home" to.

Let's just say they did provide me an actual shower chair but I thought you guys might get a kick out of this.
