Happy National Bourbon Day! Big thanks to for inviting us to an American whiskey tasting in Toronto today. Wide range of American whiskies, from rye to bourbon to single malts. Really highlighted to diversity and quality of whiskey being made in America.

Boulder The 10 Essentials is a crazy mix of casks that really shows off what can be done with American whiskies.  The cask strength Sagamore Rye had tons of spice and herbal notes and you can’t go wrong with a port influenced Manhattan with Angels Envy Rye.

Pretty fantastic lineup from this past weekend's tasting. A young , a malt, .distillery in a sassicaia cask, inchfad and a cask strength peat bomb to finish off. That's why we call this event Oddballs!

It's Rye Day, I'm in love.

The Toronto Whisky Society barrel pick of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye. Our pick ended up being a bold, spice heavy rye, with banana, brown sugar, oak and significant depth. Bottled at a massive 66.9% ABV.

This is not a subtle rye and I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Thanks to and for the awesome event this week. Seeing how they're doing it the right way down in Guelph was a treat, as was chatting with two generations of Canadian booze artisans. Looking forward to seeing you this young distillery evolves in the coming years and decades! The distillery is beautiful and the whisky is really good, so check them out if you find yourself in southwestern Ontario!

Spring weather is here in Toronto, so that calls for some spring whisky.

Really easy drinking 19 year old Arran from Hunter Laing. Main profile is grassy, apple, vanilla and malt. Oak and spice definitely present from the long maturation.

You don't see that many independently bottled Arran whiskies, so this was a real treat.

A (hopefully) last blast of winter serves as the backdrop for the last of our vintage lineup being tasted Sunday, the Glen Scotia "Dumpy Green Bottle" 8 year old! Bottled likely between 1980-82, this will be a highlight of the lineup for most.

Glenforres isn't a malt you come across often, especially not from an OB, but it's modern counterpart is well regarded these days. This is a teaspooned Edradour from the early 80s and while it doesn't have the best reviews and often is described as having a soapy note (likely from a generous tails cut) we are excited for this rare penultimate entry in our Vintage malts lineup this weekend!

Next up is a malt familiar to many, Glenrothes 12, except this one was bottled in 1989, and rates 88 on whisky base! The owned by Berry Bros & Rudd, it was a key I gradient in the City Sark blend. Today it is owned by Edrington and most of the distillery's output is used for single malts.

Not a ton of info out there on these 80s bottlings of glenturret 12. The distillery has closed and reopened numerous times and changed ownership repeatedly as well. This was quite likely distilled while under the independent ownership of James Fairlie and bottled under Cointreau's ownership in the 80s. Today Erdington owns them and much of the distillery's output goes into the Famous Grouse.

Haven't come across too many Glenesk bottlings before, and the last was at a Waddingtons auction preview pre covid. Even more rare are these distillery bottlings from the mid 80s, whose average value on auctions is around $500. Of course we are going to crack it and see what the hype is about!

Not much on the internet about this one. Couldn't find a single review, event on whisky base or the 53k review archive on Reddit! What I could find suggests this is an early 90s bottling of Deanston, as it was the only Burn Stewart Highland distillery at the time. It may also be a blended malt or teaspooned Deanston, given the use of the term "pure Highland malt".

You don't see a lot of Miltonduff these days as most of the distillery's juice goes into Ballantine's. But back in the 80s when this was bottled, it was a common sight on LCBO shelves. Will be great to try this blast from the past in a few weeks!

Tomintoul isn't one of the old scotch distilleries with history back to the 17-1800s, but were the 5th to open among the ma y opening their doors in the 60s/70s. This was bottled sometime between the 1989 acquisition of the distillery by Whyte & Mackay and the mid 90s, when this very unique bottle style was produced. We held a Tomintoul tasting in early 2020 just before the pandemic hit. Very curious to see how this compares to the more modern Angus Dundee bottlings.

In just over a month the Toronto Whisky Society will be having a tasting of ten malts bottled in the 80s and our members are finding out the lineup from these posts. This Tamdhu bottled in 1985 (distilled in 1975 at the latest) retailed for just $23.75 back then! (Sticker still on the bottle). Very curious how this would compare to modern Tamdhu.

Sláinte! Happy Burns night to you all! Hope your Burns bottle kill is as fun as this one! never fails to pick great casks and this is one of the best I've ever had from the distillery. Distilled 1995, it spent 20yrs in an oloroso butt. An absolute gem to kill off on this auspicious day!

What to do when you happen upon a box full of 18yr deconstructed inputs? You make some custom blends obviously and try to recreate the blend from memory. Our best guess is at least 50% grain 22.5% Longmorn and strathisla and 5% Islay. And at the end of the day we just threw all the Isla in a bottle with a little bit of the others to make a nice peaty blend!

It's the holiday season and the has finally released the 2023 Laphroaig Cairdeas!

I'm a big fan of port casks and Islay whisky, so very happy to grab this new white port and Madeira finished whisky.

Instead of the heavy handed traditional port influence, this new release is sweeter with more stone fruit notes.

If you are looking for a great Laphroaig release for a winter bottle, grab one of these before they run out!

Any day is Rye Day.

I've really been enjoying Jack Daniels Rye at barrel proof, both the special edition and the standard Jack Daniels Single Barrel Proof Rye.

Toms of spice, chocolate, oak and the trademark banana note still comes through.

If you ever have a chance to try a barrel proof Jack Daniels Rye, I would highly recommend it.

A smart whisky club would do a Jack Daniels Rye Single Barrel pick.
