Sharing a crowd favourite, my 'Complete Guide on 'Travelling with an Auto-immune Disease'.

This was a very personal post for me to write as an auto-immune disease sufferer and long Covid survivor. Yes, travelling for us, has its challenges, but we can take some control, prepare and give ourselves some grace

https://www.storiedlandstravel.com/post/the-mega-guide-to-travelling-with-an-auto-immune-disease

Five years ago I was diagnosed with two auto-immune diseases, and I've been trying to 'escape' from them ever since. As my fellow auto-immune sufferers know, these invisible illnesses in combination with the rigors of travel often make our symptoms worse. That being said, we can still take vacations...

Wheels n’ Heels. What can I say?

Another incredible conference under our belts as we strutted and wheeled our way through another meaningful break-out session on Accessible Travel at

This is unquestionably amongst the most important work I’ve collaborated on: Bringing about awareness to Accessibility in the travel space.

The ripple of change we’ve seen in the last couple
of years has been so rewarding. With the robust support we’ve garnered from the likes of Air Canada, HX Hurtigruten Expeditions, Justin Barnett of Visit South Africa and so many other suppliers, business development managers and fellow travel advisors has motivated us to keep pushing the boundaries.

Five different travel advisors, from four different agencies with one BIG dream: Make travel accessible to all✊🏽

We learned yesterday that Wheels n’ Heels is rolling out of the break-out room and making our debut on the MAIN STAGE at TMPVancouver in February 2025👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

So now the work begins. The partnership strengthening, collaboration collecting, resource building, research gathering and so much more.

Thank you to the epic team at Travel Market Report who’ve brought us back and supported us adding our voices to this fantastic advisor-led conference. You’re doing amazing work in our industry, and TMP Calgary was a massive success!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

A special thank you and acknowledgment to the incredible team at Air Canada for sponsoring our work, take a chance on us, for leading the way in accessible travel policy and for ensuring we make it to our conferences safely and in comfort ❤️

And thank you to all of you who’ve spread the word, cheered us on, cast your votes, wrote emails and made noise. I cannot wait to hug, lunch, laugh and celebrate with you in the coming months❤️❤️❤️

I’m also here speaking with “Wheels & Heels”, our Accessible Travel Panel ♿️ ✈️ ✊🏽

I may take a couple of days to respond to emails - I will respond to your email upon my return on Thursday morning.

I see you. And I understand. Isn't that what we all deserve to hear and feel?

1 in 7 people globally live with some form of disability and it is estimated that 80% of those folks live with a non-visible disability.

What could be considered a non-visible disability, you ask?

This could include neurological, cognitive, and neurodevelopmental challenges, as well as physical, visual, auditory, and sensory processing difficulties. Additionally, they encompass respiratory issues, rare diseases, and chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, and autoimmune.

Next week, I'll be joining my Think Tank 'Wheels n' Heels' in Calgary to discuss non-visible disabilities with travel colleagues and suppliers across Canada.

Hello Storied Landers.

Welcome to Level 5 of Jumanji.

What, in the flying frisbee has been going on across the travel industry???

Unseasonable Hurricanes, rail strikes, airline strikes (plus potential impending airline strikes), sky rocketing tourist and visa fees, escalated luggage fees, protests, tourists are a GOOD thing, tourists are a terrible thing, presidential elections and alcohol bans (thank you Mexico!)….*takes a deep breath*….never in my life have I had to be more plugged in to the media in relation to MY business than the last five years.

If I just look back over the last 6 months, next to the pandemic, it was one of the most disruptive years for travel.

All this to say, it’s been very challenging for Independent Travel Advisors like myself to keep up with all of the chaos, stay abreast of changes, service clients on the ground and get through our enquiries in a timely manner.

Thank you to all of you who’ve stuck it out with me through all of the bumps and continue to bring your business back to me.

There have some big, BIG changes going on behind the scenes, and a few announcements over the next couple of months.

In the meantime, shoot those enquiries over to [email protected].

****Please do not send messages or enquiries via FB messenger. My page has been hacked twice over the last five months and information is not secure there!****

**Longer Than Average Wait Times**

Just a heads up folks. Travel advisors are scrambling to help guests' vacations that are impacted by Hurricane Beryl. Wait times for airlines and suppliers have been upwards of 6 hours!!!! We cannot just snap our fingers and get a hold of someone.

Thousands of folks are affected around the world. Not to mention, St. Vincent and the Grenadines have just been decimated and Jamaica is directly in its path. We're all worried about our friends scattered throughout the Caribbean, this is terrifying.

Please exercise some patience and know that we are working as hard and as fast as possible to get your trips sorted. If advisors aren't answering the phone, it's likely because they're on hold! Check your inboxes :)

Appreciate you, your patience and perspective.

As always, wishing everyone safe and storied travels.

Pesky summer travel hiccups + what to do about them

➡️ Seat Swap Surprises?

So, you’ve checked in online and picked your seats, but then you get to the airport and... surprise! They’ve changed.

What to Do: Head straight to the gate desk (not the ticketing counter). Gate agents are your best friends here—they can help fix the seating situation or find someone willing to switch seats. Be kind, be calm, be reasonable!

Lost or Delayed Luggage?

➡️ Your bags are MIA

What to do: Find the airline’s baggage desk near the baggage claim area and file a claim before you leave the airport. If you can’t locate the desk, call the airline ASAP to report your missing luggage.

Hang on to those receipts for any essentials you need to buy—just keep it reasonable (no designer splurges, unfortunately). Then, when you’re back, file a claim with your travel insurance. And next time, throw in an airpod so you can track your luggage!

➡️ Delayed and cancelled flights?

What to do: If you're one of the thousands of Westjet travellers affected by the mechanic strike, you're likely panicking - Especially if you're travelling this week. Whether it's Westjet or another airline, if you're flight has been cancelled, visit the 'Guest Updates' page. This will save you hours of waiting on the phone, and you may be able to amend your trip online. Also make sure to visit the CTA to know your 'air passenger rights'.

➡️ Not Loving Your Hotel/Resort Room?

What to do: Ask for the manager. Call from your room or go to the front desk and ask to speak to a manager. Be specific about the issues and honest about what resolution you’re seeking. Make sure to document everything (take photos), and send a note to your travel advisor so they can attempt to escalate the issue if necessary.

➡️ Rental Car Issues

What to do: If your rental car isn’t what you expected, contact the rental company’s customer service. They might be able to upgrade or switch your vehicle. Always check the car for damage before driving off the lot and report any issues immediately.

Travel is not what it used to be. Never in the history of aviation, have we seen the reoccurrence of flight cancellations than in the past 5 years. It's never been more important to have flexible travel arrangements and robust cancellation and interruption insurance. Yes, it drives up the cost of trips, but it's an unavoidable reality.

"Accessible Travel isn't a travel niche, it's a social justice issue, a basic human right."

This was the point I wanted to make during my speech at Travel Market Place in Toronto this past week.

Flanked by two incredible experts in accessible travel, Bobbi-Jo Roback and David M Lyons-Black , and moderated by RainCity Traveller - Jen Albert, our collective goal was to bring awareness to travellers with visible and hidden disabilities, challenge suppliers to step up their accessibility initiatives, and provide resources to advisors who wanted to learn more.

Two years ago, we all (including missing member Matthew Moniz Medeiros of No Maps Needed Travel) formed a cohort in partnership with Air Canada in an effort to shine a spotlight on Accessible Travel. This has been some of the most rewarding work I've ever done, and I look forward to seeing how much impact we can continue to make across the industry.

Westjet Strike Notice:

"According to a notice posted Friday evening by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), which represents WestJet’s aircraft maintenance engineers and tech ops, workers took strike action at 7:30 p.m. EST.

“The union remains engaged in dialogue with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) and the airline to resolve this impasse,” the AMFA wrote. “The AME’s were hopeful this action would be unnecessary but the airline’s unwillingness to negotiate with the union made the strike inevitable.”

Please keep checking the status of your flights and refer to Westjet's Guest Page for your next steps:

'Advocacy In Action'

When travel advisors from 5 different agencies come together to champion accessible travel, this is what it can look like.

It started with an exchange of personal stories, then, sharing our client stories, and finally, collective outrage at an industry slow to accept the fact that everyone's journey matters. And here we are today, heading off to Travel Marketplace Toronto to share our stories, insight, and experience working in accessible travel.

I am so proud of my 'Wheels n' Heels' squad, for all that we've accomplished thus far and I can't wait for the road ahead.

We believe in community over competition here, so if you're looking for an incredible travel advisor, I have FOUR right here for you!

I also want to send out a massive thank you to Air Canada not only for their unwavering support but for putting their money where their mouth is and creating the most comprehensive Accessibility Plan across the airline industry. As my colleague David says; When you know better, you do better.

Just over here sorting through the 1100 photos, videos, pages of notes and etc…all from this short, even day escape to Cabo. Like who needs THAT much content?!

TRAVEL ADVISORS, that’s who! We gotta know e-v-e-r-y-T-H-A-N-G about the destinations we send our guests to!

It had been over 15 years since I was last in Cabo, I needed the condensed refresher course! No better education that DIY!

So YES, I’m writing (cause I know ya’all love it when I do that and writing makes my soul sing). And YES I’m working on a resort review, destination review, “what to see and do” list and more.

I’m also desperate to restart my podcast but dang it, I need 5 more hours in the day😭😭😭😭 But with summer being a slower time for travel bookings, I plan to carve out some time to get back on the microphone 🎤

Sincerely,

Your Favourite Storied Lander ✏️ 🌍 ✈️

A few thoughts as I stood on Lover's Beach here in Cabo the other day.....

I've been in this career since 2001, and truth be told, I've fallen in and out of love with it a hundred times.

It looks all glam and fab, but it's not. It's panicked 3am WhatsApp messages from guests with in-destination 'emergencies' that can almost always wait til daylight.

It's HOURS upon HOURS of research. And curating. And phone calls. And emails back and forth between suppliers who make promises they'll never keep which in turn makes you break promises.

It's both elation when you click SEND on those Edocuments and you already KNOW your guest is going to be talking about this trip for years to come. But there's equal frustration when a destination doesn't live up to your guest's expectations.

And in the darkest times, it's a nightmarish call to say one of your sweet, young guests will not be returning. No one talks about grief in this career, but it's real.

This year has been my toughest year in travel, thus far. I even lost my lust for writing which felt like someone stole my soul.

So why the hell do I still do it? Because it's in my DNA. I don't know how, or why, it just is. And more importantly, because I rather selfishly derive so much joy from your stories (well, when things go well at least, LOL) And because I know everything comes full circle, and sometimes, you just need to hit the big 'ol reset button.

So as I enjoy these last few days down here in sunny Mexico, know I'll be coming back refreshed, reset, and ready to rock your travel plans xoxo

“WestJet today has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), the union that represents WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. As a result of today’s lockout notice, a work stoppage could occur as early as Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 12 p.m. MT, unless a deal is reached.

WestJet today has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), the union that represents WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. As a result of today’s lockout notice, a work stoppage could occur as early as Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 12 p.m. MT, unless a deal is reached.

The decision to issue a lockout notice was not one that was made lightly, and we sincerely regret and apologize for the uncertainty this causes for our guests and the communities and regions that rely on us. Despite our unwavering commitment to reach a collective agreement, AMFA continues to show up to the bargaining table with unreasonable demands and expectations,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airline and Group Chief Operating Officer. “With AMFA publicly issuing a strike vote alert last week and publicly directing guests to fly with other carriers, we can’t allow the unpredictable nature and lack of progress to continue. We are left with no alternative but to issue a lockout notice in an attempt to bring this to a final resolution.

The WestJet Group has been in active labour negotiations with AMFA since September 2023. The WestJet Group has presented an offer to AMFA that would make WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers the highest paid in Canada, with a cumulative wage increase of over 20 per cent across the span of the collective agreement. The offer would also deliver industry leading work-life balance standards and strong commitments to job security.

"We sincerely value the work and contributions of our Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, and our proposed agreement reflects this. We are unwaveringly committed to reaching an agreement to prevent travel disruption, however, we are equally prepared to protect the travel plans of our guests and to provide long-term stability and security for all employees at the WestJet Group,” concluded Pen.

Issuing a 72-hour lockout notice does not mean travel disruption will occur. However, in the coming days, the WestJet Group will take all necessary actions to manage the impacts as much as possible, including:

Beginning preparations to operate a reduced schedule.
- Proactively managing changes and cancellations, to ensure the ability to communicate with guests in advance of their flight.

- Providing flexible change and cancel options for those who wish to make alternative arrangements.

Please visit WestJet’s Guest Updates page for more information regarding flight status, travel changes and applicable dates for flexible change and cancel options.”

I'm going to do something MEGA uncomfortable for me.

I'm going to celebrate....myself.

*GAG* *CRINGE* *RECOIL*

You can do this.

It's Global Travel Advisor Day and I know it sounds like just another one of those silly made-up days. But you know what, we're kind of awesome.

I'm in my 22nd year of business. That's basically almost ALL of my adult life. I would be remiss not to honour the journey it's been. All of the incredible places I've seen, stories I've collected, and all of the amazing humans that have allowed me to be their ambassador to the world.

I LITERALLY survived a pandemic (Not so Ironically, Covid took me down for the FOURTH time last week and it was a doozy).

So today I'm going to throw myself some love for making it this far, for being so dang resilient, for STILL believing that tourism is the ultimate peacemaker (when done right).

And to all of my colleagues across the industry, around the world, I raise my glass to you! Travel agents rock!

Here's to another twenty years!

From the bottom of my fragile heart, thank you for the outpouring of support yesterday on my last post. I have the best guests on Earth, and I’ll fight anyone that says otherwise 🤣❤️🤣❤️

Today is all about barrier-free travel. Just before noon today, I’ll be joining this panel of exceptional travel advisors and we’ll be navigating the discussions around travelling with visible and hidden disabilities.

I get to throw my anthropology hat on today and tackle the issues through a socio-cultural lens, (hopefully) by providing travel advisors and industry suppliers some insight, resources and tools to help us ALL become better allies to travellers with disabilities.

On this episode of ”Travel Advisors are Human Too”…

Trigger warning: Child death 😢

It’s been a whirlwind couple of months in my little business, but not for the usual reasons. It’s not because I’ve been overwhelmed with enquiries. Not because my inbox is full. But all because I let my “humanness” get the better of me…

In December of 2023 two of my oldest clients phoned me from Thailand to tell me their little one had passed away on their trip. They hadn’t booked their trip with me, but they called because they needed help navigating the next steps. It was so fresh, I could hear medical announcements blaring in the background. I could hear the shock, grief and disbelief in their softened voices. I had known these two beautiful humans for twenty years. I booked their very first trip as a couple. I booked their wedding and honeymoon. And I booked both sets of grandparents to Halifax when little V was born.

We cried together. All of the “I’m so sorry’s” in the world would never bring back their sweet little girl, and as a Mom myself, it was an unimaginable nightmare that I wanted to reverse for them, immediately.

Sadly, I’ve helped guests repatriate loved ones before. I did what little I could. Walked them through what their insurance process would be with their provider. Phoned relatives on their behalf. Called a friend and fellow travel colleague living in Chiang Rai who then phoned a local hotelier to comp a stay.

And then we had to walk through what would feel like a funeral procession to the airport where they would have to carry their daughters little suitcase and board the flight with an empty seat next to them.

It’s been a few months and it all crashed into me a couple of weeks ago. I thought I had compartmentalized. But I will never forget that phone call. Nor the days of phone calls afterward. Nor the waves of grief.

But today it hit the hardest when I learned my good name was being dragged through the mud in my little community. A few enquiries had slipped through cracks during that time and in an instance, I was villainized, criticized and slandered, all because I couldn’t return an email on time.

So I just want to put a few things in perspective, and make something very, very clear. Travel Advisors are humans too. And our clients are often like family to us. We have the honour and privilege to be there for the most significant celebrations of their lives. But we’re also there for some of the most horrific moments. This was one for the books.

So before you slander a business’s name, especially one that is run by ONE PERSON, reach out, in kindness first. Check on them. Show some compassion. Get the back story and get some perspective.

In loving memory of Little “V”, may you rest in power little Queen💔 I’ll visit your Mama and Papa soon, and we’ll share stories of your marvellous mischief, mayhem and merriment💔💔💔
