Do you want to be prepared and feel confident in bear country?
In this course, we'll talk about bear safety and safe practices for folks hanging out in the woods, whether you're hunting, foraging, or working in the woods. We want to deliver some best practices for avoiding bear encounters, how to react to an encounter if you come across a bear, and the worst-case scenario. If you find yourself in a situation where a bear is charging or attacking you, we will try and give you some options to mitigate that situation as well to have the best possible outcome.
I have joined Rob Wilson, an EarWild mentor and fellow Park Ranger.
As a Park Ranger, one of your key roles is to be a park officer or park ranger responsible for maintaining park visitors' safety. The position requires you to manage problem bearers and bear encounters, investigate bear encounters, and manage challenging bears in campgrounds. Over the years, both Rob and I have had a significant amount of experience assessing bear behaviour. Rob and I have a combined 50 years of professional expertise in keeping people safe in bear country, doing our best to educate people about bear safety and how to react to bears in the field.
Lastly, we have spent a lot of time in the woods working, hunting and foraging in bear country. And we have the bear stories to prove it!
This course will help you build the knowledge and confidence to avoid bear encounters and make you feel safer in bear country.

Part 1 - Know your bears - Bear identification

Leaving the tail attached to carcass is surprisingly tricky. Here’s how I do it.
In BC, hunters are required to leave evidence of sex and species (the tail) attached to an edible portion of the deer. In this case I am boning out the deer and leaving the required evidence to one of the hind legs.

Nature quiz! Who is this? He came up in one of our prawn traps from the deep. I think his legs are too short to be an octopus. Doesn’t really look like any squid that I’ve seen before. Any ideas out there? #eatwild #octopuslookalike
New podcast episode with Adam Foss. We get into planning adventure hunts and some gear talk but first we talk about the importance of stargazing and why we hunt.
Adam is a filmmaker, photographer, conservationist and adventure hunter. Adam has dedicated time in the mountains filming wildlife and mountain adventures in addition to his remarkable personal hunting adventures. His passion is sheep hunting and he has a ton of knowledge and experience to share with us. We talk about how to plan for big adventures, critical gear that he relies on, where we can save weight and where we can add a few ounces to build a bigger safety net. Adam tells us who he likes to hunt with and the importance of supporting new hunters on their journey to success. As I listened to the podcast I really enjoyed hearing Adam's philosophy of hunting, about really seeing the stars and calming the mind. This is one of the best conversations I’ve had since doing this podcast. I hope you enjoy it!
Adam's recent project, Community for the Wild, is available for Telus subscribers on Optik TV and will be available more broadly as it makes the rounds on the film festival circuit over the next year.

Some fun news. I posted this to Instagram a few days ago but I guess it didn’t link to the EatWild pages.
On our mule deer trip a few weeks ago I asked Miki to marry me. Witnessed by a herd of wild sheep she said yes.
There’s been so many awesome moments with Miki over the past couple years but this one tops them all.
We woke up in the morning in the Alpine and drank coffee while spotting the basin across from camp. We saw two legal bucks so we packed up and went after them. My plan was to ask Miki the big question when we were on top of the mountain where we would have 360° views of the beautiful mountains around us. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate as the clouds moved in dashing my proposal plans and our spot and stalk hunt plans.
As we were nearing the summit on the way over to where we last saw the bucks, the wind picked up and blew out all the valley cloud, and the mountain peaks appeared again. I was just far enough ahead of Miki when I reached the summit that I had time to get the ring out, set it in the lichen in the box and present it it to Miki as she reached the summit.
With a bit of fumbling, I managed to get it together as Miki reached the summit. I was down on one knee looking up at her. She was looking right past me with her binoculars up. Sheep!
It took a few moments to get Miki to pull her attention away from the herd of sheep that were witnessing the proposal from 50 meters away.
She said yes. The sheep hung around for it all. Figure that was a good sign. Looking forward to so many more adventures with Miki @_mi.kee
If you are wondering, once we got the proposal out of the way we carried on with our hunt. We never found the original bucks but we did see a beauty buck that didn’t cooperate enough to be our engagement buck. Almost!
The ring was made by my good friend and artist Robert Chaplin @robertchaplin The ring is two Chanterelles wrapped into a ring.

The current blossoms are popping on my block. This means that cocktails are in the mix, and more urban wild edibles to come this season. @wildnorthernway and I are hosting a spring urban wild foraging webinar series over the next month. Each webinar is a two parts. In part one, we will show you how to ethically and safely harvest urban wild edible plants. Then we send out on your harvest adventure. In part two, we will be zooming in the kitchen and showing you how to make to most delicious things with your local harvest. Should be fun and tasty!

My way of life is completely dependent on healthy populations of fish and wildlife. I am committed to the management and conservation of all species. Ecosystems and habitat are changing or disappearing with the impact of how our society chooses to treat the earth. We need to help our political leadership understand the importance of wildlife and empower them to take action to protect habitat and manage wildlife. Share a positive message about how hunting contributes to your way of life in your communities, and share that message directly with your elected officials. We need wildlife and wild places.
Part 2 of the Pole Bender Adventure podcast series is up. Catch up with our Caribou hunting crew as we wait out this Arctic storm that is hammering us with 100 km winds and snow. Our trip plan, gear prep, and decisive actions kept this trip from becoming a disaster story. So instead, it’s a story of near disaster, and we talk about the steps we took to keep the trip from becoming a disaster story. If you are planning an adventure into the wilderness then you should listen to this podcast. BISON ADVENTURE PODCAST - Part 2 is up! Snowmobiles, backcountry skiing and hunting all wrapped up in one fun adventure. Check out part 2 of the series. Link in my bio or search EatWild podcast. #eatwild#huntingpodcast #rookiehunterpodcast #rookiehunter #learntohunt #bison hunting
Follow along with our rookie Bison hunting crew as we figure out how to hunt this majestic animal. Our hunting group drew a "once-in-a-lifetime" tag to hunt Bison in Northern B.C.
The crew: @seanbadart @devontaylorstewart @taylor.j.e.woodcock @jennyp403
Link in the bio!! Please share and review!!!! At one time there were over 60 million Bison roaming the plains of North America. Market hunting and habitat destruction reduced the herd to less than a thousand animals by 1900. Since then, numerous conservation efforts have helped Bison recover to over 500,000 animals. It's estimated that there is a population of over 2000 Bison living in B.C. The Bison herd is expanding and they are competing with threatened wild sheep for limited winter range habitat. Wildlife managers have encouraged a limited hunt to manage the Bison population growth and herd expansion.
Our group was lucky enough to get drawn for two tags for Bison on this hunt. The tags allow us to shoot a bull, cow, or calf bison. This hunt took place in late January in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It was - 38 degrees Celcius when we arrived at our cabin and all of our beer was frozen. We had a lot to learn about this animal, its habitat, and how to hunt them. Come join us on the hunt! --
