A busy few days out at the Powerline Training Facility in Pemberton this week working with one of the Hydro crews on hoist, hover exit and touch-and-go recurrent training.
With wildfire season upon us, we are diligently preparing through real scenario-based training in Whistler this week.
We are committed to supporting the community and prioritise safety and training as core values. As part of our summer ops preparations, the team are actively conducting long-line and bucketing training sessions, ready to respond to wildfire season.

With the heat wave coming to an end and a cold front moving in, powerful winds have come along with it. This has lead to erratic and destructive wildfire behaviour in our backyard.
Wednesday saw the Casper Creek fire near Seton Portage (80km from Whistler) grow vehemently to the North over Carpenter Lake, burning through transmission lines and leaving the Bridge River Valley without power.
Yesterday, the winds brought extreme activity to the Downton Lake fire (80km from Whistler) pushing Bridge River Valley residents out of their homes on evacuation order.
Blackcomb Helicopters has crew and aircraft responding where possible, but little can be done in such extreme conditions. Our hearts go out to all of those affected, and we remind all of our readers to please act with great caution in the outdoors, and share support where you are able. These fires are not far from Whistler - they are devastating our neighbouring communities and affecting many. The Mclean Group Employee Fund has donated $5,000 to the Red Cross British Columbia Fires Appeal.

Devastating wildfires continue to burn across Western Canada with the hot and dry weather showing no end in sight. To the crews on the ground and in the air, we hope you stay safe, and thank you for the incredible work you’re doing.
We may be biased, but we think there's no better way to experience Whistler than from above!

We're lucky to have incredible wilderness to adventure in in B.C, but that can also mean technical rescues in tricky terrain if an injury does occur.
This particular SAR mission was to assist the extraction f an injured subject who had slipped and fallen on rocks near a Squamish river. Two technicians were inserted via hoist and the subject was extracted via ARP utilizing tagline for spin/swing control. Given the tall trees, a very high hoist was required using almost 250ft of cable, and careful maneuvering was needed to establish and maintain sufficient offset in the tagline while not exceeding its 300ft length while working around trees near the rotor disc. It was a very calm day with no wind and a long vertical climb would have been necessary to perform a dynamic departure without the use of a tagline from this location, with the risk of initiating a spin being quite high given the funneling topography we chose to remain on station and perform a static hoist extraction.
