FLUX Laboratory

FLUX Laboratory Laboratory for Performative Practices

//

"The primary inspiration of Flux Laboratory is the movement of the world and of those beings who dare to roam" Nicolas Musin

Flux Laboratory is an artistic incubator based in Geneva and Athens, which aims to encourage innovative collaborative dynamics through experimental and transdisciplinary artistic projects. Its aim is to react with vivacity to the questioning of the world today, be it political, economic or ideological, and to open the dialogue between art and science to the public. Flux Laboratory produces contemporary dance pieces, performance art and cultural events centred around gesture, experimentation, encounter and sharing. Since 2016, Flux Laboratory supports and produces projects in Athens under the auspices of the Swiss Embassy in Greece. The research core of Flux Laboratory's programming in Athens is the body itself. The body is explored as an integral tool of artistic creation, a source of knowledge and experience as well as a dynamic element underlying the concept of social cohesion and community development. Open to all current developments in art, science and technology, the possibilities are endless when it comes to cross-collaborations. That is why Flux Laboratory Athens encourages partnerships with other institutions and individuals who welcome dance as a revealing model for how to think, live and work. In this way, it contributes both to the local Greek entrepreneurial sector and to the cultural dynamics of its community.

WORLD REFUGEE DAY - MAYBE WE JUST STAND STILL
20.06.2024

It is with great honor that Flux Laboratory is sharing, as each year, an artistic project referring to World Refugee Day.

In "Maybe we just stand still", the movement of the two bodies, the different pace of the choreography, and all the small details that express safety or fear respectively, are there to remind us that ritual is the main milestone towards solidarity.

Artistic note by Ilias Chatzigeorgiou - Choreographer/Dancer/Performer
"Two dancers: one moving fast and spasmodically, asking for help; the other standing still, passively receiving the state of the first dancer, unable to provide any help at all. This simple kinetic idea illustrates that, even with good intentions, the urgency is greater, conveying the message that we must act now."

MOVEMENTS ARE AS ELOQUENT AS WORDS - ISADORA DUNCAN

VENICE BIENNALE
SWISS PAVILION 2024

20.04.2024 - 24.11.2024

We're pleased to support the exhibition Super Superior Civilizations by the artist Guerreiro do Divino Amor presented at the Swiss Pavilion of the Venice Biennale.

Guerreiro do Divino Amor's exhibition presents the sixth and seventh chapters of the monumental saga "Superfictional World Atlas", The Miracle of Helvetia and Roma Talismano.

At the Swiss Pavilion, Guerreiro do Divino Amor aims to create the most complex and ambitious installation of his entire career: a total, immersive work of art, littered with classical architectural elements - posthumous symbols of supposed Western superiority. Columns, fountains and capitals, not to mention vast areas of faux marble, evoke an imagery of power and supremacy, while serving as the backdrop for the Pavilion's two main installations.

BIENNALE DE VENISE - PAVILLON SUISSE 2024

20.04.2024 - 24.11.2024

Flux Laboratory Athens in the framework of its artistic residency program happily invited this fall the dance company to work on the performative piece “Mystery 172 A dancing journey”.

The piece will be presented on Saturday the 16th of December 2023 at ARKOPOLIS as part of the closing ceremony of 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture. It constitutes an open invitation to children, teenagers, but also to all residents and visitors of Eleusis to join a dance journey with a skateboard in the city’s public space.

In this site specific performance, contemporary dance meets street dances and skateboarding. Its main thematic axis is the highlighting of diversity and, at the same time, of the elements that unite human beings, supporting the idea that any place can be turned into a dance stage and anyone can dance, bringing their own background, their own knowledge and desires.

Meeting each other, communicating, sharing and dancing. All these are what matters.

« An Architecture of Times" is a short artistic film made in a building in the historic center of the city of Athens. A building built in the 60s, that symbolises a Greek era, with its aspirations, its influences, and the reminiscences of the past.
A building forgotten in time, which used to house a chemical industry. Paused, awaiting for a new life. The choreographer Anastasia Valsamaki explores these spaces before they disappear, before renovation, before loss. A film articulated by the videographer Parissis Panou who poetically explores the gentle melancholy of these walls, but also of a city brought to change, here, just below the Acropolis.

The building located at Paleologou Mpenizelou Street -in the centre of Athens, near the Metropolis- is being renovated in order to create a special administrative and cultural center dedicated to Greek-Swiss synergies. Soon, under the same roof, diplomacy will converse with the arts.

OPEN CALL - EXPERIMENT B
Flux Laboratory Athens

Open call for choreographers & scientists
15 October– 15 December 2023
Flux Laboratory Athens
12 Geronta Str., Plaka 105 58

Flux Laboratory Athens welcomes applications for the second residency program titled Experiment B. The Experiment series focus on the intersection between scientific research and dance practice, aiming to explore their creative collaboration.

We invite existing collaborative duos or groups that involve at least one choreographer and one scientist to apply with an idea or project that they wish to collaborate on. This can be a completely fresh idea that you wish to kickstart or a project that is already in development.

The theme and subject matter of projects are completely open. Key requirement for proposals is that artist(s) and scientist(s) are equally involved and invested in the creative/collaborative process.

The residency is time bound and process orientated. Outcomes can therefore take a variety of formats such as work in progress showings, performance lectures, workshops, screenings among others or any combinations residents find suitable for their project.

The mission of Flux Laboratory Athens is to function as a unique incubator of synergies that will gradually evolve outside its walls, providing experimentation time and resources.
