4.

Located in the northern region of Costa Rica, this ecotourism project offers a variety of bird watching and nature tourism opportunities. The Bird Route consists of 18 nature reserves specifically chosen for their high diversity of bird species. Most importantly, this region hosts the last remaining habitat in Costa Rica for the endangered Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus). The Costa Rican Bird Rou

te offers the best opportunity to view this species on the planet! The Costa Rican Bird Route project is being implemented by the non-profit Rainforest Biodiversity Group and the objectives are:
1. Improve the connectivity of habitat within the San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor in northern Costa Rica
2. Provide an economic benefit to local landowners to maintain habitat through eco-tourism
3. Attract tourists to the northern region of Costa Rica for more than just two or three days
5. Develop the Bird Route to be a famous destination known for its birds, its culture, and amazing natural resources.

Happy Arbor Day!

ABC's not just for the birds – we're for the trees, too! Trees are essential for birds everywhere. To care for one means caring for the other. That's why, between 2004-2012, ABC helped our partners plant 2.4 million native trees - mostly in South America in the Andes region.

What are you doing to celebrate Arbor Day?

Just outside the bustling town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui are the calm waters of Lago Jalapa. The lake and surrounding forest is now managed together by the Ministry of Energy and Environment and the community of Rojamaca to protect these natural resources. Members of the community still work their own farms, however, they have also invested time and energy into making Reserva Lago Jalapa a special place for visitors.

We're still looking for additional volunteer birders for this year's Maquenque Bird Count, which will be held on Saturday, January 8th. We had a lot of great feedback from last year's count, partially on account that an incredible 241 species were seen during the one day event! For more information on how to participate in this year's count, check out the RBG blog: http://rbg-themacaw.blogspot.com/
