We will say this time and time again, “Our Caribbean” (Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo) has the best tasting food and drinks, and the Piña Coladas are no exception. They’re made with real coconut milk and fresh pineapple. They go down smooth as silk. Be careful though, they pack a good punch too.

This particular drink was made by Sol del Caribe in Cockles (another one of our favorite restaurants in the area).

Surf Lessons at Surf Beach are a fun local activity.

At Cocles Beach you’ll find a surfboard rental station and Surf School. The owner-operator, William also sets up a tight-rope course and volleyball nets for beach goer use.

If big waves aren’t your thing (yet) don’t worry, there’s always a mellow “second wave” to ride safely to shore. His one-on-one lessons are open to all ages.

One of my favorite adult beverages is the Costa Rican It consists of the juice of a few lemons, beer, and a salted rim (oh, and ice because beer gets warm the minute you pour it into the cup here 😄).

Life’s a beach at Playa Chiquita. 🙌🏽🙌🏽 Walking, biking, scootering, or by vehicle, this pretty private beach is just minutes away from Casa Luz.

Our rascally little monkey 🐒 friends. The moneys here, known as Howler monkeys aren’t too big in size but they sure sound like they’re huge. They like to make the most noise during the early morning hours when it starts to rain. Kind of their way of letting you know it’s about 2 or 3 hours before you need to wake up. 🤦🏽‍♀️😴

A big added bonus... we invested in two beach cruisers to share with our Casa Luz house guest. There are many ways to get around this beach town, but riding beach cruisers is one of the best ways. Riding bikes here allows you to reach true Pura Vida pace, slow and steady. You can take in all of the beauty of nature that probably you would miss if you were zooming by in a vehicle.

There’s so many cool places to see right near by Casa Luz and these beach cruisers will get you there.

Okay, one catch... you have to tune into the weather here. Getting caught in big rain pour downs isn’t always that fun. But somehow, after being here for a bit, you just learn to know when rain is coming and to plan accordingly.

The end of the road (well, almost).
Route 256 dead ends into Manzanillo’s wildlife refuge. This is the last restaurant before heading into the beach and refuge parking areas.

Jairo Mora Sandoval Gandoca-Manzanillo Mixed Wildlife Refuge protects mangroves, estuaries, seagrass, inundated forests, coral reefs, sea turtle nesting.

You can get to Manzanillo by car but people say in order to really take in the beauty of the area, going by bike or scooter is best.

Okay, let’s talk Costarican Empanadas. We were turned onto these by a new friend of ours here. She made a snack-run for the kids who were having too much fun at the beach and didn’t want to leave. She told me there is only one place to go to get these babies. (Really there are serval places, but if you want the best ones...)

Patty’s has the best in all the land. 😄 From what my taste buds tell me, she uses better quality meat, her spices are blended to perfection, the flaky empanada shell is a work of art, AND they’re always served hot.

These empanadas are great little snacks when you want something good to eat but you don’t want to wait for table service.

Located across the street from Hot Rocks and .pv in Puerto Viejo, Patty’s is a worthwhile stop for 👌🏽👌🏽

We found the sweet connection for fresh milk and other fresh dairy products. This little Meracado in Punta Uva receives deliveries from the local dairy every Thursday morning. Very good to know in a small town like this if you enjoy making your own coffee at home with fresh milk.

This is our favorite fruit and veggie stand to stop at along Highway Costa Rica 256 (the road that runs through Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo). They’re located just before the puente (bridge) heading into Cocles, about 1.5 miles from Casa Luz.

This couple has a great variety, including Yucca and potatoes, fresh Pipas (young Coconuts) and limes, pineapple, papaya and mangos, of course bananas and plantains, and much more.

This is a great stop to stock up during the week. Also be sure to catch the Saturday Farmer’s Market on the weekends.

The mission to Violo Waterfall isn’t as easy as some made it seem, but it was definitely worth the trek there to enjoy its beauty. It’s about a 25 minute drive from Casa Luz, plus a 15 minute walk from the parking area. We had a very kind guide. He was a young boy who generously volunteered (for $5) to guide us to the waterfall. We were so lucky to have him with us because we definitely would not have fount it without him.

If you have some spare time while you’re in town, this is a worthwhile excursion.

Tropical fruits 🥭🍍🍌 are more nourishing and delicious when consumed where they are grown. The whole Puerto Viejo area has so much fresh fruit. It’s just amazing. 😍

One of my favorite breakfast a s snacks here is fruit smoothies. Just add some mango, frozen banana, pineapple, coconut milk, and a few ice cubes. Blend and enjoy!

Staying home and cooking is always a great option here at Casa Luz. Our kitchen is set up well for creating delicious meals and enjoying a pretty sweet little view out of the windows, while you’re at it. 🌴 🌺

They buy their fish straight from the boats when the fishermen come in.

We love to surf-watch and Salsa Brava is the best local spot for that. What a wonderful added bonus that the food is great here too. 🤗🙌🏽Their Pollo Caribeño was also on point.👌🏽👌🏽

In the front yard of Casa Luz sits this amazing Ylang Ylang tree. It’s known here as the Chanel #5 tree (Ylang Ylang is one of the main essential oils in that perfume). In the evenings, these trees put off the most amazingly sweet aroma.
They say it’s an aphrodisiac sent that arouses the senses. It’s definitely a romantic aroma that creates a feeling of nostalgia and a conscious awareness of the connection between the mind and the heart. 🥰 We invite you to come smell it for yourself. 🙌🏼🙌🏼
